Foreword“Nine dead in house fire.” Fortunately we don’t read this or similar headlines every day. Nevertheless, around 4,000 people die in fires every year in the EU member countries. In many cases, deaths, injuries and major damage to buildings can be prevented if the fire protection requirements are implemented correctly. Therefore, passive fire protec-tion in buildings aims to design, construct, modify and maintain build-ings in such a way that the outbreak of a fire and the spread of flames and smoke (fire spread) are prevented. And, if a fire does occur, it must be possible to rescue people and animals and carry out fire-fighting operations effectively.

In terms of fire protection, building service equipment, such as pipe-work and ventilation systems, represents a particular weak point. Pipe- and ductwork passes through separating building elements (walls and ceilings), stairwells and corridors, and thus forms a path along which flames and smoke can spread. In the event of a fire, pipe- and ductwork has a significant impact on safety in buildings and can soon pose a seri-ous threat. The risk potential rises with the number of pipes and their various tasks, thicknesses, materials and media. Therefore, in order to achieve the necessary fire protection targets, service penetrations in separating building elements must be sealed off. These fire protec-tion measures can be carried out in accordance with the less strin-gent requirements of the MLAR (state building regulations) or with an approval. The approval describes the performance in certain applica-tions. For pipe penetration seals with an approval (abP or abZ) easy handling should be ensured and simple installation rules followed.

Clearly building services equipment is highly complex and technically demanding. Passive fire protection in this field is a challenge for those responsible for planning the relevant measures. The implementation of these measures requires highly competent firms and careful monitor-ing of the installed systems when residential and other buildings are modernized or constructed.

InstallationFor non-combustible pipes with an outer diameter ≤ 28 mm, measure 25 cm from the 1-metre tube and mark. If necessary, slit the tube lengthwise, put it round the pipe, apply Armacell polychloroprene-based adhesive such as Armaflex 520, Armaflex HT 625 or Armaflex RS850 to both of the edges to be joined, allow to tack dry. Then press edges together. Secure the seam with Armaflex self-adhesive tape. Push tube into the penetration until the mark coincides with the underside of the ceiling.

For combustible pipes with an outer diameter ≤ 32 mm halve the Armaf-lex Protect tube. If necessary slit the 0.5-metre-long tube lengthwise, put it round the pipe, apply Armacell polychloroprene-based adhesive such as Armaflex 520, Armaflex HT 625 or Armaflex RS850 to both of the edges to be joined, allow to tack dry. Then press edges together. Secure the seam with Armaflex self-adhesive tape. Push tube into the penetration up to the upper edge of the bare ceiling and close the residual gap.

The new DIBt clearance rules do not apply for penetration seals with a gen-eral appraisal certificates (abP) in relation to other companies’ systems which have an abP. Here the clearance rules defined in the MLAR continue to apply. In some general technical approvals (abZ) and general appraisal certificates (abP), clearances of more than 50 mm, e.g. 200 mm or 100 mm in relation to other systems are required. When implementing these spe-cific requirements, the larger clearance is always decisive. The clearances stated in the currently existing approvals (abP/abZ) for certified pipe seals also continue to apply, however only between pipe seals which have been tested together: smaller clearances up to zero clearances are only possible between certified pipe seals.

Installation ARMAFLEX PROTECT TUBES

All butt and lengthwise joins must be bonded with one of Armacell’s pol-ychloroprene-based adhesives, such as Armaflex 520, Armaflex HT 625 or Armaflex RS850. Apply the adhesive in a thin, even coat to the edges to be joined. Allow to tack dry. The minimum tack-drying time depends on the ambient conditions. The adhesive develops its greatest adhesive power when it is still sticky to the touch, but no longer “stringy”. Press the edges together carefully and with adequate contact pressure, working from the inside to the outside. Secure the glued seam outside the building element with Armaflex self-adhesive tape.

ARMAFLEX PROTECT SHEETSDetermine the circumference of the pipe. Use a strip of Armaflex pro-tect sheet material to do this. Do not stretch the strip. Transfer the circumference length determined to the sheet and cut out the piece. Apply a thin coat of Armaflex adhe-sive to the cut edges and allow to

tack dry. Press together at the two ends first, then in the middle. From here close the seam completely working from the inside to the outside. Apply the second layer in the same way. In addition, the outer sheet must be secured with winding wire (6 times per metre; stainless steel: Ø ≥ 0.5 mm – galva-nized: Ø ≥ 0.65 mm). Secure the glued seams outside the building element with Armaflex self-adhesive tape.

Fire-protection documentation for seals / penetrations In the case of construction products for which there are no regulations (non-regulated construction products), building law stipulates building authority approvals in the form of the general appraisal certificate (abP) or general technical approval (abZ). The abZ is issued by the DIBt, the abP by test bodies recognized by the building authorities.

As far as their fitness for purpose is concerned, non-regulated construc-tion products approved by the building authorities meet building law require-ments in the same manner as regulated construction products. Therefore, from a building inspection point of view, can be used in the same way as regulated construction products.

In regard to penetration seal systems, approval in the form of an abP is required for individual pipe penetrations such as Armaflex or Armaflex Pro-tect. For more complex systems, such as soft firestop systems or fire protec-tion collars, an abZ is usually required.

Penetration seals / penetrations which have an abP must be documented by a declaration of conformity. For penetration seals / penetrations with an abZ it is additionally necessary to mount an identification plate. For penetra-tion seals created in accordance with the MLAR Chapter 4.2 / 4.3, e.g. with Armaprotect 1000, labelling is not required. Further details on this matter can be found in the table below.
