Fire damper BKA-EN

DescriptionLocking devices against fire and smoke in ventilation ducts - firedampers- are used for the automatic locking of fire lobbies inventilation and air conditioning systems. They constitute unreg-ulated construction products according to Building RegulationList B Part 2 and are subject to approval. The "General and Spe-cial Conditions" of the general technical approval Z-41.3-667 inits current form, the mounting and operating instructions andthe common standards and guidelines must be observed in con-nection with this documentation.

Quality assuranceRegular, legally required self-monitoring and external monitor-ing carried out by the Institute of Material Inspection (MPA)Baden-Württemberg guarantee maximum quality. Production isby the QA procedure certified to EN ISO 9001.

Note regarding gas purgeFire damper BKA-EN with spring return actuator can be used forcold gas purge (tduct < 72°C and tsurroundings < 50°C).Opening/actuating the BKA-EN after a thermal release is onlypossible in each case via approval. This approval is given by thecompetent highest building authority, country-specific devia-tions being possible. Once the approval has been given, a gaspurge of up to about tduct < 140°C is possible.

- Galvanized sheet steel housing, optionally- Stainless steel housing material no. 1.4301 or 1.4571- Housing with DD PU painting

- Molded connecting flanges with center hole, corner anglewith long-hole for simple channel mounting and high stabil-ity

- Thermal partition made of silicate structural panels- Locking damper made of glass-fiber-reinforced, asbestos-

free lightweight concrete, cold and hot leakage requirementsaccording to DIN EN 1366-2 are met by circumferential hoseand intumescent seals.Horizontal and vertical position of the damper blade possible

- Thermal release via fusible link 72°C or 98°C, optionally withelectric or pneumatic release devices

- includes two opposite inspection openings- Connection of a smoke release device with general technical

approval (e.g. SCHAKO RMS-L, see catalog Air, Part 2, sub-register 09.e) in connection with suitable electric or pneu-matic release devices for the fire damper possible, thepropagation of fire and smoke is effectively prevented, andthe requirements of the Model Building Regulation (MBO) isfulfilled. Optimum detection and switching operations by ad-dition of the SCHAKO KOMES bus system (see catalog Air,subregister 09.c) possible.

- Application: max. 1000 Pa operating pressure at vstirn < 10m/s, mounting position is independent of air flow direction

Frame drilling

Use

When installed in massive walls/ceilings, in lightweight partitionwalls and away from walls of lower fire resistance class thanF90, the BKA-EN must have the same fire resistance class as theabove component to be protected.

The use of the BKA-EN without connecting ventilation linesusing protective gratings (overflow) is not allowed. An ap-proval must be obtained in each case by the building owneror a person authorized by him from the highest building au-thority of the federal state in question.

Installation outside/away from wallsInstallation outside/away from walls with horizontal/verticaldamper blade. The distance of the BKA-EN flange to the wall is≥ 260 mm. Mounting in connection fire-resistant ventilationlines devoid of openings L30, L60, L90 made of sheet steel linedwith an external insulating layer of wall board or wall boardsonly. The fire resistance duration of the ventilation line must be

proven by means of general building supervisory test certifi-cates, expert opinion or standards. Line must be connected tothe side of the BKA-EN opposite to the fire-resistant line bymeans of a flexible connecting piece (alternatively: flexible alu-minum ventilation line).

Connection of ventilation ductsThe local regulations on ventilation systems (e.g. LüAR) apply. In particular, no inadmissible forces may act on the locking de-vice and the space-enclosing components and impair their fire resistance duration in case of fire. The required bellow expan-sion joints must be designed as flammable, elastic connecting pieces made of at least standard inflammable construction ma-terials (construction material class B2 to DIN 4102) at least 10 cm in length (in the built-in condition). Alternatively, ventilation lines can be made of aluminum. Suspensions must be dimen-sioned and manufactured to DIN 4102-4.

Installation information

Air flow directionInstallation independent of the air flow direction possible. Makesure that a uniform air flow reaches the locking device or damp-

er blade. The air flow must not impair the closing operation.

Minimum distancesThe dimensions given apply to the standard design of the BKA-EN. If components such as electric or pneumatic drives are builtin, the dimensions must be adjusted.

Inspection openings of the locking device must be freely acces-sible, otherwise these inspection openings in the connectedventilation ducts must be provided in the immediate proximity.

Suspension of locking deviceSuspensions must be dimensioned and manufactured to DIN4102-4. Suspensions and pole braces must be insulated to fireprotection standards from suspension lengths l = 1500 mm(bottom edge bare ceiling to bottom edge duct), to be effectedaccording to the manufacturer's instructions for the particularsystem.

Pneumatic swivel drives type PND, 6 bar(Closed-circuit principle)Remote controlled opening and closing by pneumatic swiveldrive (continuous pressure). Complete regulation mechanismfor easy fitting with 4 screws. If the fusible link is intact, thelocking damper can be closed and opened as desired by on-sitecompressed air supply. Mounting a solenoid valve (accesso-ries) allows the locking damper to be opened while power is ac-tive and to be closed by interrupting power, thus allowingswitches, smoke trigger devices, etc., installed on-site to beconnected. The locking damper can be kept open under com-pressed air and power. It can be closed via thermal release(72°C) or by removing the pressure.Thermal functional readiness through 72°C thermal switch.

AttentionAir consumption at 6 bar max. 2 Nl/h (as delivered), max. 10 Nl/h (after 50 cycles). (Supply line must be dimensioned sufficient-ly large). Valves mounted on-site must be dimensioned in ac-cordance with their distance from the pneumatic unlocking andrelease device.

It is connected on-site via a commercially available G 1/8" con-necting nipple

For transport reasons and to avoid possible damage during fit-ting, the complete regulation mechanism can be delivered sep-arately (if desired). The space required for retrofitting must betaken into account. Fitting is easy as the complete regulationmechanism is assembled on a mounting plate (if required withwiring).

Thermal pneumatic triggeringThe thermal release will break the fusible link, and the attacheddirectional valve will interrupt the compressed air supply to thecylinder and close the damper blade. Opening velocity can beset. After thermal release is complete, the locking damper can-not be opened by means of the actuating cylinder, before replac-ing the fusible link.

Electro-pneumatic releaseThe electro-pneumatic release will interrupt the power supply ofthe solenoid valve. If the fusible link is not broken, the lockingdamper will open again as soon as the power supply of the so-lenoid valve has been restored.

- Flexible connection piece consisting of profiled connectionflanges with elastic intermediate piece made of polyesterfabric PVC-coated on both sides, construction material classB2 to DIN 4102, with welded lip seals (sealing degree to24194/VDI 3803/EN1886 B; temperature-resistant from -20°to 80°C).
