April2019Party with a

Purpose!

Forty-five Parrot Heads made their way to the East bank of the Arkansas river to attend our March Phlocking at River Spirit Margaritaville Restaurant. It was great to see many Parrot Heads which we have not seen in a while. Don-na Curley, Charlie and Trina Dawson, Linda and Roc Rothhammer. It was also nice to see Lori Den-ny at the meeting so she could hear that we are dedicating this year’s golf tournament to Mark Denny.

As people began to sign-in, sign-up for events, and min-gle, we setup for T-Shirt sales. Margaritaville donated several

hundred brand new T-Shirts to our club. They are from various Margaritaville bars and restau-rants. We are selling T-Shirts with $20 to $30 price tags still on them for $10 each. Grab a t-shirt

as all of the money we collect goes to our Trop Rock River Phlock charities (Coffee Bunker and Joy to the Cause.) That adds up to be a win-win!

The Margaritaville Restaurant surprised us this month with some free food. Every-one knows how much Parrot Heads LOVE free food. Margaritaville provided a nacho bar for us to wade our way through. Our thanks goes out to Margaritaville.

As we finished off the last of the nachos, President Cathy made her announcements and shortly after-wards we started the raffle. It was, of course, another good raffle. As the raffle ended, our Phlock started thinning out pretty quick this month.

Attitude of GratitudeAn interview with our George McMillen Submitted by Don Jones

This month’s interview is with George McMillen. I hope you enjoy and learn something new about George.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where were you born and raised? Where did you attend School? Career and Occupation? Tell us about your family. I was Born and raised in Southern Califor-nia until the summer between my junior and senior year of high school when my parents moved us to Coweta, Oklahoma. I came from a small high school in California of about 1,600 kids to an even smaller one with about only 525 kids. Culture shock for sure! Before I graduated from high school, I enlisted in an Infantry Unit in the Oklahoma Army National Guards located by the Old Broken Arrow High School in April 1980. In July of 1980, I went to work for a truss manufacturing company. I worked in the shop building roof and floor trusses for residential and light commercial projects in Broken Arrow. I worked my way up until I bought the company in 2002. I have only held two jobs since I started in the work force, one as Infantryman/Infantry Officer and one as a truss manufac-turer. I served 24-1/2 years in the OKARNG and I soon will have been at the truss manufacturing company for 39 years. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1998. Carla and I got married 11 years ago on March 21st. We both have three children from previous marriages. We have six grand-children from 16 years old to 1 years old with the most famous one being Miss Jorja who enjoys participating at every Parrot Head event or activity as possible. How long have you been a member of TPHC? Who or what got you involved? Carla and I joined the TPHC about six years ago. Carla had known some other people over the years that had belonged and wanted to come and check it out to see what they were all about. How many Buffett concerts have you attended? Which one is your favorite? We have been to seven or eight Buffett concerts to date. I don’t have one favorite concert because I have enjoyed them all, but if I had to pick one out I really enjoyed the entire experience of my first Las Vegas concert. It wasn’t my first concert, but the entire experience with the other Parrot Heads was really enjoyable. It enabled us to get

to know other Parrot Heads on a more personal level. What is your favorite Buffett tune or tunes? I like them all. I really don’t just have one or even a few favorite tunes. If there was suddenly no Buffett or Trop Rock music, what type of music might we find on your play list? Growing up in the late 70’s early 80’s I like most of the rock music of that era and I enjoy country music.Of all the TPHC activities, which one is your favorite and why? We have really enjoyed

volunteering and working the 13th Hole (the Rubber Putter Hole) at the TPHC Golf Tournament. We take pride in trying to make it the most enjoyable hole for all the golfers while forcing them to use the dreaded and silly rubber putter. Then having them come to take whatever challenge we have come up with for the year. It’s also nice knowing it is our club’s most successful annual fund raising project. When you are not working, what do you like to do to chillax? During football season, it is definitely OU Football games, although they are not always very low key or even chillaxable, but the rest of the times it is being with my BFF and wife either at the pool, on a road trip to wherever, or even setting in a cold deer blind and not seeing a darn thing. It is just enjoying our time together where it is just her and me.What is one thing that most Parrot Heads don’t know about you? What my real birth name was and that I was not always an OU Football Fan.Now for a goofy question. If you could have a superpow-er, what would it be and why? To travel through time so I might be able to impact not only on my own life decisions, but also possibility changing things that impacted the lives of others I have know. Then also having the ability to know what the next large Power Ball Lottery numbers is would not be a bad thing to know or have the ability to know. Any closing remarks? The club has given Carla and I an opportunity to not only meet a group of people that we probably would have never had the opportunity to meet or get to know, but it has also given us the right to call these people not only friends but also part of our family. The next time you see George, give him a big hug and a big thank you for being an active member of our club. Phins Up!

We will be holding our annual TPHC Golf Tourna-ment at the Sequoyah State Park golf course beside beautiful Ft. Gibson Lake. This year it will be dedicat-ed to Mark Denny. It is a Shotgun start beginning at 9:00am. We will be holding our pre-party at the Elks Lodge the night before starting at 6:00pm.

Golfers need to complete a registration form and make their payment before May 1st to save $5 per player ($75 rather than $80 per player.)

If you plan to volunteer, make sure you sign-up and start thinking about what you will be doing for the golfers on your hole and who you would like to work with you on your hole.

It may seem like forever, but June is just around the

corner so we need everyone to pitch in and help us gather golfers, prizes, BEER (of course we always need beer), gift cards, and hole sponsors for our tourna-ment. Remember our charities are Tulsa Cerebral Pal-sy Association and Special Olympics and all donations are tax deductible.

Make sure you track the time you spend getting golfers and donations, as you can earn one point per each volunteer hour. They can add up fast.

FORMS: We have attached the Entry Form, Spon-sorship Form, Sponsor request Form, etc., to this newsletter for your convenience.

You can also find all of the golf forms on our website (www.Tulsaparrotheads.com) under the events tab.

24th Annual TPHC Phlocking at the Phort Golf Tournament - June 29th

with the Pre-Party June 28th

Liquor / Wine Cork PullWhat is a cork pull you ask? Buy a numbered cork and

we will match it to a bottle of liquor or (in a separate event) to a bottle of wine with that number on it. You then get to take the bottle with you. A guaranteed win for anyone who participates.

We will be holding these events at the Phlocking at the Phort golf tournament this year. Now the challenge. We need donations of Liquor and Wine for the event.

Do you have those unopened bottles of wine or liquor which have been carefully aging in your wine rack or in your liquor cabinet for years. It’s time to dust them off and set them free by donating them to the club.

Bring them to our TPHC meeting in April or May. Make sure you ask your friends and neighbors to do-nate. Or maybe you are just passing a liquor store. Re-member it all goes to our charities Tulsa Cerebral Palsy and Special Olympics.

Night Light TulsaFifteen Parrot Heads (along with 120 other volunteers)arrived

under the bridge at Maybelle and Brady at about 6:00pm and helped unload “the big yellow truck.” The truck con-

tained tables, chairs, lights, and other items needed for the setup. When we finished we moved “past the port-a-potties” for orienta-tion. After a rules briefing and a word of prayer, the Night Light staff started dividing us into groups.Tammi, Nicole, and Judy were picked right away for the food prep group. The rest of us raised our hands for various groups, but did not get picked. There were about 30 volunteers left without an assigned group. Half were to be “hosts” and the other half were going on a prayer walk. George, Carla, grand daughter, and friend joined the prayer walk. The rest of us decided to walk to our cars and find a cold beverage. They said they had a record number of volunteers that night prob-ably due to spring break. Our food prep girls fed over 400 home-less that night. Way to go Parrot Heads! We will try again when they do not have an abundance of volunteers. Thanks to all which made an effort to show up. All hearts were in the right place at least.

Parrot Head Primer - 2019Here’s a primer for our new members and a reminder for our long time members about how Parrot Head Clubs (PHCs) function and also a list of useful/interesting resources.

There are 213 officially sanctioned Parrot Head clubs world wide (currently the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia). The first club was founded in 1989 in Atlanta.

All PHCs are run under the guidance of Parrot Heads in Paradise (PHiP) which is our national organization. PHiP has a website, http://www.phip.com/.

PHiP is run by a Board of Directors, most of whom are voted in for two year terms on a staggered basis. Each club gets one ballot for the Elections. You can find the current list of officers at http://www.phip.com/club-leaders.

To retain our rights to be a sanctioned club, we have to follow a few rules. These are the biggies:

• File two annual activity reports on dollars raised and hours donated to charitable events.

• Maintain a functioning website.

• Renew the club charter every January and pay dues of $75 or $1 per active member, whichever is a higher amount.

• Have a designated person as our official point of contact. For most clubs, this is the President but it can be anyone that the club chooses.

• There are some other rules and they can be found at http://www.phip.com/club-general-guidelines.

• There are no rules about “stinkin’ badges” but most clubs have them. Stinkin badges, that is, not rules about them. ;)

For 2018, Parrot Head Clubs donated/raised over $3,400,000 and volunteered 211,459 hours. That’s sure something to be proud about! You can read the entire report, and see numbers for prior years, at http://www.phip.com/about. It’s truly an impressive set of data and one that every PHC member should be proud of.

Tulsa Parrot Head Club 24th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

“Phlocking at the Phort” June 29, 2019

Sequoyah State Park Dear Giver, The Tulsa Parrot Head Club has been actively involved in charitable events since 1993. This year, our 24th annual charity golf tournament will benefit Tulsa Cerebral Palsy Association (TCPA) and Special Olympics. We will be donating every dollar we raise at our golf tournament to these special charities. TCPA is a wonderful group of people dedicated to helping the lives of children and adults affected by cerebral palsy in the Tulsa area. Special Olympics helps people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success through the power of sports, We are asking businesses and individuals to help us this year by sponsoring a hole at our golf tournament or by donating promotional merchandise, golf equipment, gift certificates, gift cards, volunteers, well you name it, we will gratefully accept almost any type of donation! We are currently searching for sponsors to help us fund the tournament. The minimum donation to have your name and/or company logo displayed on a special sign at a tee box is $100. Of course, we will gladly accept an anonymous donation of any size. Your donation is tax deductible. You can make your check payable to: Tulsa Cerebral Palsy Association (TCPA), Special Olympics, or the Tulsa Parrot Head Club. Regardless of how you address your check, you will receive a donation receipt from one of our sponsor charities. If you donate $100 or greater, please send me an electronic file with your logo, company artwork, or anything you would like to appear on your sponsorship sign. If you are unable to provide a logo or artwork, we will create a sponsorship sign on your behalf to promote your business or donor name. Our tournament is a unique, super fun event. Each year we have an overflow of golfers that join us from Wagoner, Tulsa, Arkansas, Texas, and even Minnesota! There are no cash prizes for finishing first, but finish 13th and your team will be the stars of the day. Our emphasis is on charity first, fun a close second, winning…well, that does not really matter as our charities are the real winners. The Tulsa Cerebral Palsy Association and the Special Olympics are a special part of the Tulsa Parrot Head Club. We have multiple members with children, nieces, nephews, sisters, or brothers directly affected by disabilities or Cerebral Palsy. Make a difference today – make your donation now! Phore the Kids!
