Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1986Pauillac, 1er Cru ClasseDeep garnet-black colour. An incredible arrayof aromas on the nose: blackberry, blackcherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black oliveand loam. The palate is absolutely seamlessfrom first impression to finish, effortlesslybuilding layers of complexity in the mouthand leading to a very long, earth and spicefinish. I cant see how this could possiblybe improvement so have no alternative butconcede perfection. L. Perrotti-Brown for R.Parker, 100 pts. 05/092 bottles

The visually stunning Pichon Longueville could

serve as the post-card-image one conjures up

when imaging a chateau in France. A Second

Growth for certain, but given Pichons lofty

neighbors, their competitive juices must be

constantly flowing. An intriguing aspect withmany these older, established estates is how

    rigorously they embrace modernityone

could be forgiven for erroneously assuming

that time has stopped inside the front door.

In Pichons case, it was the first property to

attain the ISO 14001 standard in the entire

    Bordeaux region! PhM

The 1982 is another superb example ofthat. One of the jammiest, most precociousGranges when it was released, it has nevergone through a closed stage and continues todrink beautifully. A full-bodied, opulent Grange,it reveals an inky/purple color to the rim as wellas a beautiful nose of crushed blueberries, blackberries, smoke, toast, roasted herbs, and road tar. This dense, plush, expansive, seamless, seductive 1982 has not changedmuch since I had it nearly a decade ago. R.Parker, 97 pts. 06/093 bottles

    30Chapoutier lErmite Blanc 1999Northern Rhone

This is one of the greatest dry white wines Ihave ever tasted. The 1999 Ermitage lErmiteis a liquid mineral, crystalline expression. Itis the essence of its grape as well as terroir. It may be the greatest expression of terroirI have seen outside of a handful of AlsatianRieslings (Clos Ste. Hune comes to mind). Ithas that transparent character that terroiristestalk more about than actually recognize.Drinking it is like consuming a liquefied stonyconcoction mixed with white flowers, licorice, and honeyed fruits. It is frightfully pure, dense, and well-delineated. As I said last year, Thereis no real fruit character, just gl
