    Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986Pauillac

    u: into neck

“The 1986 possesses outstanding richness,a deep color, medium body, a graceful,

harmonious texture, and superb length. The

    penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts,

minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this

wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as

well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome

extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense

    potential. Patience is required. Anticipated

    maturity: 2000-2030.” R. Parker for TWA, 100

“I had this wine both in Seoul, Korea in

February, and from my cellar in December,

2008, and it was remarkable how identical

the wines smelled and tasted. It offers an

    extraordinary aromatic display of spring

flowers, camphor, sweet red and black fruits,

a hint of licorice, and no evidence of its 100%

new oak cask aging. Round and generous

with low acidity, but an opulent, full-bodied

richness that is fresh with laser-like precision,

this stunning wine is just beginning to reach its

plateau of full maturity, where it should remain

for another three decades. A sensationaleffort, it is one of the legendary wines made

at Chateau Margaux.” R. Parker for TWA, 100

Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe

    u: bottom neck

“This wine remains one of the legends of

Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward,

youthful style that existed during its first

25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years

has developed such secondary nuances as

cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis,

    underlying floral note, full-bodied power,

extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, andfinish of over a minute are a showcase for

what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The

wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and

pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity

and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning

to budge, as I would like to drink most of my

supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great,

still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one

does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux

chateaux when you see the complexity and

    brilliance of this first-growth. Anticipated

maturity: 2015-2050+.” R. Parker for TWA,

“Deep garnet-black colour. An incredible array

of aromas on the nose: blackberry, black

cherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black olive

and loam. The palate is absolutely seamless

from first impression to finish, effortlessly

building layers of complexity in the mouth and

leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. I

can’t see how this could possibly be improved

so have no alternative but concede perfection.Drink now to 2045+.” L. Perrotti-Brown for

Chateau Gruaud Larose 1982St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe

    u: into neck

“A massive wine that is clearly of first-growth

quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose

remains a youngster. A broodingly dense,

    thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/

purple color offers up scents of beef blood,

steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and

underbrush. One of the most concentrated

wines of the vintage (as well as one of themost concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever

tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich

wine whose tannins are getting silkier and

silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years

of life. This behemoth is a singularly profound

example of Gruaud Larose that continues

to justify its legendary status. Anticipated

Chateau Gruaud Larose 1986St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe

u: into neck, lightly worn capsules

“Still tasting as if it were only 7-8 years

    of age, the dense, garnet/purple-colored

    1986 Gruaud-Larose is evolving at a

glacier pace. The wine still has mammothstructure, tremendous reserves of fruit and

concentration, and a finish that lasts close to a

minute. The wine is massive, very impressively

    constituted, with still some mouth-searing

tannin to shed. Decanting of one to two

hours in advance seems to soften it a bit,

but this is a wine that seems to be almost

immortal in terms of its longevity. It is a great

Medoc classic, and certainly one of the most

    magnificent Gruaud-Larose ever made.” R.

“The final blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon,

32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc was

    harvested between September 14 and

October 3. The spring was cold, yet summer

was extremely hot and dry—one of the hottest

vintages since 1949. The fact that virtually no

rain fell in September served as a catalyst to

get all the grapes ripe and in cellars. Some

bottles of this wine have a definite brettpopulation that gives off the notes of sweaty

horses, but this one did not. The ones I have

had from my cellar—where I have had it

frequently—are quite pure and clean. I suspect

that the brett population is in all of them, but

unless the wine hits some heat along the

transportation route or in storage, the wine

will not show any brett. This one tasted at the

chateau, as well as those I’ve had from my

cellar, have been pristine and not showing the

sweaty horse notes that can be in evidence

in brett populations that have flourished in

the bottle because of external temperatures.

This wine has an incredibly complex nose of

spring flowers, blackberry and cassis liqueur, scorched earth and barbecue spice. It is full-

bodied, majestic and opulent, with low acidity

and fabulous fruit. It is close to full maturity.

The wine should continue to drink well for

at least another 30 or more years, but it is

showing secondary nuances in the perfume.

The wine is absolutely magnificent, broad,

savory and mouth-filling. This is one of the all-

time modern legends from Bordeaux as well

as Chateau Montrose.” R. Parker for TWA,

“A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville

Baron, 1990 is one of this estate’s two or three

finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still

inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an

    extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense,

creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and

a hint of licorice as well as an impressively

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron 2000Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe

“This is one of the great wines of the vintage,

and certainly a candidate for one of the

finest wines made at this estate under

the management of Christian Seeley and

proprietor AXA. Showing incredibly well at

two tastings of 2000s, the wine has a dense

bluish/purple color and a beautiful nose of

incense, melted asphalt, and creme de cassis

as well as hints of new saddle leather and

licorice. It is superbly concentrated and very

pure, with excellent texture and opulence.

The acidity seems low, the tannin high but

well-integrated. This is a compelling 2000 thatis just closing in on its window of maturity and

should stay there for at least 20 or more years.

“The 1989 has taken forever to shed i ts

formidable tannins, but what a great vintage

of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of

the pyramid although the 1990, 2000, and

down the road, some of the more recent

    vintages such as 2005, 2009 and 2010

should come close to matching the 1989’s

    extraordinary concentration and undeniable

aging potential. Its dense purple color reveals

a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning

bouquet offers classic notes of creme de

cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite.

Powerful and rich with some tannins still to

shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent

in terms of its evolution and will benefit from

another 4-5 years of cellaring. It should prove

to be a 50 year wine.” R. Parker for TWA, 99+

     The biggest, richest, fullest-bodied Lynch

“Possibly the youngest wine of all the 2005

Médocs in terms of its evolution, at age 10

the inky purple 2005 Pontet-Canet tastes

more like a two-year-old wine. Loads of

pure blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit

are present along with a hint of licorice and

background oak. It is full-bodied, ripe, and

    excruciatingly fresh, vigorous and exuberant.

This is a tour de force, and a sensational effort

Chateau Pontet Canet 2006Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe

“The 2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially

for those in their thirties and forties as it

needs another decade to reach maturity,

after which it should keep for 30+ years. This

vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild,

    has produced an opaque bluish/purple-

colored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure

nose of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme

de cassis, and a hint of scorched earth.

Incredible concentration, stunning richness, and a 60-second finish result in a wine that

transcends the vintage as well as this estate’s

    1855 classification. This enormously endowed,

“It is no secret that I adore Chapoutier’s luxury

cuvee of white Hermitage called Cuvee L’Oree.

Made from 90-year old vines and microscopic

yields of 10-12 hectoliters per hectare, this

wine flirts with perfection. It is a compelling

white Hermitage. Made from 100% Marsanne,

it is as rich and multidimensional as the fullest,

most massive Montrachet money can buy.

It is unctuously textured, yet extraordinarily

and beautifully balanced. I suspect it will drinkwell early in life, and then shut down for a

few years. It should last for 4-5 decades. The

1996 possesses some of the most amazing

Chateau Pontet Canet 2009Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe

“An amazing wine in every sense, this classic,

    full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential

Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron,

who continues to reduce yields and farms

his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in

Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the

2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense,

graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis

and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity,

    laser-like precision, colossal weight and

richness, and sensational freshness, this is a

tour de force in winemaking that is capable

of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are

elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully

integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol

(which must be in excess of 14%). This

vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau

of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild,

appears to have done everything perfectly

in 2009. This cuvee should shut down in

the cellar and re-open in a decade or more.

Chateau Pontet Canet 2010Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe

“An absolutely amazing wine, from grapes

harvested between the end of September

and October 17, this blend of 65% Cabernet

Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet

Franc and Petit Verdot has close to 15%

natural alcohol. It comes from one of the few

biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you

are likely to see many more, given the success

that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels,

both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/ winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine

with the classic Pauillac nose more often

    associated with its cross-street neighbor,

    Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there

are also some violets and other assorted

floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts

massiveness and intensity but never comes

across as heavy, overbearing or astringent.

The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-

bodied, massive richness and extract are

simply remarkable to behold and experience.

It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such

great wines from a great vintage, but it is really

a privilege to taste something as amazing as

this. Unfortunately, it needs a good decade ofcellaring, and that’s assuming it doesn’t close

down over the next few years. This is a 50- to

75-year wine from one of the half-dozen or so

    most compulsive and obsessive proprietors

in all of Bordeaux. Is there anything that

proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right?

Talk about an estate that is on top of its game!

    Pontet-Canet’s 2010 is a more structured,

tannic and restrained version of their most

recent perfect wine, the 2009. Kudos to

    Pontet-Canet!” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts.

incredibly concentrated, all wrapped in a

review in 2012 save for the fact that it’s

evolving a bit more slowly and I have extended

    the suggested initial drinking window

accordingly. That review is: Almost invisible

wood frames the pretty and impressively

complex nose of dried flower, citrus zest,

mineral reduction and tidal pool aromas. The

well-concentrated mid-palate is quite roundand supple though the focus is maintained as

there is an underlying firm spine of acidity on

the balance the other permitted varietals in

the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of

    203-1a,b,c is a blend of 93% Syrah, 5%

Grenache, and 2% Viognier, with 25% whole

clusters. Whereas the Ode to E is all from the

Eleven Confessions Vineyard, this cuvee is a

combination of 43% from the estate vineyard,

28% from the White Hawk Vineyard, 21%

from the Alban Vineyard, and 8% from the

Bien Nacido Vineyard. The good news is

there are nearly 1,500 cases of this recently

    released offering. An extraordinarily flowery

nose interwoven with scents of blueberries, blackberries, incense, and graphite soars from

the glass. Although not the biggest or most

concentrated Syrah Krankl has made, it is one

of the most nuanced, elegant, and complex.

It remains full-bodied, but builds incrementally

on the palate, and comes across as elegant

and delicate, especially when compared to

    many California Syrahs. Nevertheless, the

intensity is mind-boggling, and the finish lasts

Cumulus, and the rest from purchased fruit

grown in the White Hawk Vineyard in Los

Alamos and the Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa

even better out of bottle than it did from barrel.

    blueberries, blackberries, graphite, and subtle

smoke. With great fruit, tremendous texture,

A blend of 96% Syrah, 3% Roussanne and

1% Viognier, it was fermented with 16%

whole cluster before spending just under 42

months in 100% new French oak. It offers an

incredible array of sweet dark fruits, cassis,

white chocolate, licorice and hints of bacon

fat that meld perfectly with its full-bodied,

    seamless, layered and impeccably put-

together palate. Given the wealth of fruit here,

(a.k.a. the extended barrel-aged cuvee), the

with. A blend of 75% Grenache, 22% Syrah,

the Eleven Confession Vineyard, it spent just

under 30 months in 22% new and 78% used

cassis, licorice, smoked duck, spice-box and

come closest in style to the 1998, the debut

vintage, although the tannins are sweeter

and the wine is perhaps fatter and richer inthe mouth. The alcohols in these cuvees can

be very high, ranging from 16.1% in 2003,

    15.8% in 2000, 16.3% in 1998, to 15.5% (the

lowest ever) in 2007. An inky/purple color is

followed by aromas of smoked meats, Peking

duck, licorice, lavender, aged beef, grilled

steak blood, black currants, plums, sauteed

    cepes and soy. Enormously concentrated,

broad, expansive and massive but not over

the top, this is a tour de force in winemaking

that is impossible to imagine unless one has

a bottle to work through over the course of

4 to 5 hours. Although they advertise using

all 13 authorized varietals, this wine is over

90% Grenache, largely from the famed LaCrau section of Chateauneuf du Pape. They

do have other vineyards from which they pull

some of the fruit that goes into the Cuvee

da Capo, including St.-Jean, Esquilons and

occasionally Monpertuis. The 2007 seems to

be broader, fatter, more unctuously textured

and more flattering to drink at this stage than

the 1998 was. In that sense, the evolutionary

development may resemble their 2003s. The

2007 was bottled in February, 2010, and my

    anticipated drinking dates are 2014-2030+.”

    “An extraordinary effort, Yquem’s 1990 is a

rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This

wine also possesses lots of elegance and

finesse. The wine’s medium gold color is

accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose

and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak

is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the

    well-integrated acidity, and a seamless,

full-bodied power and richness have createda wine of remarkable harmony and purity.

    “Paul Avril was a bigger-than-life vigneron, a

visionary, and a great teacher, but Vincent has

been in charge for a number of years, and he

has rewarded his father with what I believe is

the greatest Chateauneuf du Pape made since

    1978 and 1990, the 2007. I have not only

tasted this wine at the estate, but I purchased

it for my cellar, and have now drunk it on

three separate occasions out of bottle. It isunquestionably one of the great Chateauneufs

of my lifetime, and I suspect it will merit a three

digit score after another 3-4 years of cellaring.

The blend is generally 65% Grenache, 20%

Mourvedre, and the rest small amounts of

    Muscardin, Vaccarese, Counoise, and Syrah.

It exhibits what is probably the deepest

color I have ever seen here, and the finished

alcohol is a high (for Clos des Papes) 15.5%.

Still slightly restrained because of its recent

bottling, but wow, what potential complexity,

    mind-boggling richness, and compelling flavor

profile are apparent. It is a sublime expression

of the art of winemaking as evidenced by

its dense purple color and big, sweet kissof kirsch, framboise, blackberries, licorice,

roasted herbs, and smoked meat. It hits

the palate with a fascinating combination

    of substance, power, full-bodied authority

    yet extraordinary freshness, elegance, and

precision. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring,

and watch it unleash its glory over the next

three decades. This is a prodigious wine of

“The final blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon,

32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc was

    harvested between September 14 and

October 3. The spring was cold, yet summerwas extremely hot and dry—one of the hottest

vintages since 1949. The fact that virtually no

rain fell in September served as a catalyst to

get all the grapes ripe and in cellars. Some

bottles of this wine have a definite brett

population that gives off the notes of sweaty

horses, but this one did not. The ones I have

had from my cellar—where I have had it

frequently—are quite pure and clean. I suspect

that the brett population is in all of them, but

unless the wine hits some heat along the

transportation route or in storage, the wine

will not show any brett. This one tasted at the

chateau, as well as those I’ve had from my

cellar, have been pristine and not showing the

sweaty horse notes that can be in evidence

in brett populations that have flourished in

the bottle because of external temperatures.

This wine has an incredibly complex nose of

spring flowers, blackberry and cassis liqueur,

scorched earth and barbecue spice. It is full-

bodied, majestic and opulent, with low acidity

and fabulous fruit. It is close to full maturity.

Ponsot Morey St Denis Cuvee Alouettes

2009Cote de Nuits“A very pretty nose of discreet spice notes,

red currants and damp earth nuances

that continue onto the rich, powerful and

    impressively concentrated medium-bodied

flavors blessed with an abundance of dry

extract that buffers the notably firm, mineral-

driven and wonderfully complex finish that

seems to go on and on. This is terrific and one

of the best vintages that I have ever seen for

this wine.” Burghound, (91-94) pts. 01/11

u: one very top shoulder, one top shoulder,

one lightly torn capsule removed and replaced

by Skinner specialists to reveal fully branded

    cork

“This is a denser version of the 1990 thatstylistically reminds me of what the young

1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with

a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch

of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up

an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs,

smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and

earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by

a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low

acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed

decanter, it will offer beautiful drinking, but it

needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity.

It is capable of lasting 50-60 years. This

classic Lafite is not as fat and concentrated

as the 1982 Latour, nor as complex or

concentrated as the 1982 Mouton Rothschild,

but it is a winner all the same.” R. Parker for TWA, 97+ pts. 06/09

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe

    “The 1986 possesses outstanding richness,

a deep color, medium body, a graceful,

harmonious texture, and superb length. The

    penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts,

minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this

wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as

well as medium to full-bodied, with awesomeextraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense

    potential. Patience is required. Anticipated

    maturity: 2000-2030.” R. Parker for TWA, 100
