Hi there! I'm Deann. I'm a painter. I traded in my corporate high heels for paint brushes years ago, and for the past decade have had an open working studio located in a once abandoned stove and mattress factory in beautiful historic Franklin, Tennessee, just south of Nashville. I love where I live, and in my paintings I seek to tell the stories of our collective past, the rich history of the South, and to inspire the viewer to listen to our ancestor’s voices and not just see but cherish our old places and the lives they have influenced. Formally trained at Auburn University and The Chelsea School of Art & Design, I use layer upon layer of palette knife texture that is reminiscent of tree bark and peeling barn paint.

Gone are the days when country meant drab furniture and blue geese in the kitchen. ( you know your grandmother had some! ) My work is the new country— Fresh, vintage chic, urban rustic, and a unique style that art collectors across the country are taking to.

I live with my family on a mini-farm in Brentwood, Tennessee. We have lots of animals including a rooster named Colonel, who cock-a-doodle-do’s us awake every mornng! I hope you enjoy my work, and I look forward to hearing from you!

I approach each canvas intuitively-- painting not from a preconceived sketch, rather, following the way the paint and palette knife are leading. Working in a wet on wet technique, I start by mixing up a few colors that are pleasing together, laying on color and building it up, sometimes up to ten layers, before beginning to scratch into the surface, freeing the figure or landscape waiting to be revealed.

Deann’s work was chosen by acclaimed builder Jack Thomasson to be featured in the Music Room of the 2014 HGTV Smarthome in Nashville. HGTV also filmed Deann in her Franklin studio as a Featured Artist in an HGTV 2014 Smarthome TV special.

Deann captures the spirit of events like weddings, parties and festivals with a unique, one of a kind original painting. Inspired by the event as it unfolds. Painting onsite, guests watch the work evolve as she captures the texture of emotion. When the party is over and guests have gone, hosts are left with an original painting on canvas to commemorate the event and treasure forever. A cherished keepsake.

Having dabbled in painted objects like guitars and chairs in the past, Deann has turned her palette knife to home furnishings, creating a line of bespoke, one of a kind lamp shades. In a delicious palette and variety of sizes, these beauties are sure to cast a lovely glow on any room.
