Key Points1. To Study the diversity of life, biologists use a classification system to name organisms and group them in a logical manner.

2.  In binomial nomenclature, each species is assigned a two part scientific name.

3.  Linnaeus's Hierarchical system of classification includes 7 levels.  They are from smallest to largest and include species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom.

Scientific NamesThere is a problem with only naming organisms

by their common names.

What is the name of this organism?

Cougar

Puma

Panther

Binomial Nomenclature

Common Name : Grizzly Bear

Scientific Name : Ursus arctos

Rule for Binomial Nomenclature:

First name: Genus and is always Capitalized.

Second name: Species and is not capitalized.

Linnaeus’s System of

ClassificationOrganisms are grouped by more than 2 name.

Every organisms actually has 7 names!!!

Each name represents a different level of organization, or taxon.
