When was the last time you stood at the
river’s edge and listened to the wind in the
leaves? It’s an image that might conjure up
a peaceful morning spent fishing, a happy
memory with your family, or a moment of
calm at a time when you really needed it.
The Grand River Conservation Authority’s
vision is simple: a healthy watershed where
we live, work, play and prosper in balance
with the natural environment.
That balance is vital. How do we stay grounded in
these times of rapid change?
Research indicates that outdoor experiences are
restorative. Nature provides space for reflection,
personal growth and the joy of discovery —
an opportunity to feel like we are a part of
something bigger than ourselves.
But it’s not just about data — it’s deeply personal.
We have all had a moment of wonder in nature,
where the rest of the world disappeared for
just a moment. Whether walking a leafy trail or
enjoying a refreshing sunset lake swim, there is
nothing else like it.
A lot has changed since the Grand River
Conservation Foundation was founded 54 years
ago to raise funds for conservation projects that
have few or no other sources of funding. But a
lot has stayed the same: we still need spaces that
help us find our place in nature, no matter what
our age or stage.
Please read on to learn more about how our
donors are making the Grand River watershed
a better place, for all of us.

“Our team came from Toronto for the second year in a row to help out. Volunteering is a fantastic team-builder, but more than that, it gets a lot of important work done and we all learn about nature in the process. That education is really important to make the benefit last even longer.”
~ Jeff McInenly, Director, Global Corporate Banking

Conservation volunteering is one of the best ways to connect with our natural world. It’s a great opportunity to play a hands-on role in making our watershed better, while enjoying the benefits that come with spending a day outdoors.
With support from the GRCF, the GRCA’s volunteer program continued to grow in 2018. Volunteers planted more than 14,200 trees and shrubs, removed more than 50 m3 of invasive species and collected more than 7,700 kg of litter. They also contributed more than $56,000 to assist additional groups to take part, and to support additional programs such as outdoor education.
Some groups, like Wells Fargo Bank, undertook special projects to encourage species to thrive. The nesting sites that their team built will promote the safe growth of local turtles at the Laurel Creek Nature Centre. In Ontario, seven of the eight species of native turtles are at risk of disappearing.

“Losing yourself and becoming part of the vibrant ecosystem of Luther is an experience everyone should enjoy, whether they are birding, hunting, or simply enjoying the outstanding scenery. For Kath and me it is a chance to step away from our busy everyday world and renew our spirits. We want to help others to find this experience by visiting Luther Marsh.”
~ Bill Troubridge

Located near the source of the Grand River, the Luther Marsh Wildlife Management Area plays a major role in making sure flows in the Grand River can support our daily lives. At about 5,900 hectares, it is also a very special place for wildlife. More than 260 bird species have been seen, in addition to a diverse array of animals, plants and trees. The area is a source of enjoyment for nature enthusiasts of all kinds.
With the support of donors, upgrades were made to the hunting infrastructure at Luther Marsh in 2018, as well as habitat restoration work and control of invasive species, to provide healthy native ecosystems.
Bill and Kath Troubridge are dedicated conservationists and supporters of Luther Marsh. They spend countless hours enjoying nature and pursuing their passion for hunting.

As a longtime Guelph business, Sutherland Insurance has always considered a healthy environment one of the pillars of their charitable giving. Their values are in action, supporting multiple conservation programs that make the Grand River watershed a better place.
Through a partnership under their Client Loyalty Program, hundreds of trees are planted annually throughout the Grand River watershed. They have also supported the new Guelph Lake Nature Centre, which will host more than 20,000 student learners annually, in addition to thousands of park visitors.
2018 marked many changes to the landscape at Guelph Lake Conservation Area. In preparation for the new Centre, work on a learning forest trail loop and access to the future centre began, along with tree planting and habitat enhancements that will give students diverse opportunities for outdoor learning.

“Now, more than ever, we realize how important it is for young people to put away their technology, escape from the noise of the city and experience the outdoors. As our company enters its 150th year, we are showing our appreciation for our clients and the whole community by proudly supporting the GRCA’s
conservation efforts.”
~ Suzanne Sutherland
“Almost everyone from Ayr and the surrounding communities has visited Dickson at some point, with their kids or on their own. The community wouldn’t be the same without it. It was only natural that Ayr Farmers Mutual would support improvements to such a great natural resource, enabling enjoyment for all.”
~ Brian Sayles, Past Chair

The GRCA’s FWR Dickson Wilderness Area has been a popular
spot for decades. With no admission fee, families and nature
enthusiasts flock to the area to watch the wildlife, walk the
trail and especially, to feed the chickadees. But for families
with strollers or people with mobility challenges, visiting
Dickson wasn’t so easy.
In the fall of 2018, the community officially dedicated a new,
150-metre boardwalk, information kiosk and trail, with more
than $90,000 raised.
Ayr Farmers Mutual stepped up and became one of the
leading donors for the project. The whole community can
now enjoy Dickson no matter what their level of mobility is.

Arca Financial Group, Waterloo
Financial peace of mind can lead to community peace of mind. For more than a decade, Arca Financial Group has made this a reality by donating to plant memorial trees in honour of their clients.
In 2018 alone, memorial partnerships like this led to the planting of more than 500 trees to make our environment more healthy and liveable.
“A tree is a legacy that will be there for future generations. It’s a special way to honour our clients as they remember their loved ones”, said Christine Black, Chief Financial Officer.
Richard Kleri, Ayr Over the years, Richard has volunteered with many organizations in the community. It was only natural that he would lend a hand to raise funds for the FWR Dickson Wilderness Area by helping make connections with local supporters.
“Everyone in Ayr is aware of our water, because the Nith River runs right through town,” said Richard. “It’s important that the community is involved in protecting our natural resources.”
Local ambassadors like Richard, GRCF’s Grand Champions, are vital to our fund raising success. Many attended the 2018 opening of the new boardwalk and trail at Dickson.

Susan Forster, Elora Susan has a passion for the outdoors. Birding and hiking at Elora Gorge have been favourite activities for decades. Her commitment to a litter-free environment and birds and animals that can thrive in a healthy river has led her to provide for a future gift for the GRCF in her will.
In 2018, donors gave more than $17,000 to protect and restore habitats for many species throughout the Grand River watershed.
“The Grand River is MY river!” said Susan. “We all have to take care of it.”
The Lifers, Guelph Liv and Anita Cazzola grew up at the Guelph Lake Nature Centre. Their learning inspired them to raise money for new homes for the resident “creature teachers”. As art-folk band The Lifers, they concluded their Little Dens Tour with a fundraiser concert at the Centre in August 2018.
“Having an immersive nature education growing up has played a big part in our deep connection to it now. We have to live more gently in nature to address what we see as a climate emergency. Better facilities at the Centre are needed more than ever, and we’re happy to contribute in any way we can,” said Liv.

Rotary Club of Dunnville The Rotary Club of Dunnville plays a big role in the Haldimand Children’s Water Festival. While about five hundred kids learn about water stewardship and conservation, Rotarians make sure their day runs smoothly. The Club is a founding partner of the event, providing startup funds and rolling up their sleeves each year. In 2018, donors contributed about $15,000 to the event.
“Our Club loves the Festival! It’s a great day for the kids – fun and educational with lessons they will remember. Even our adult volunteers learn something new!” said Nyree Segui, Past President.
Every effort has been made to ensure this list is up-to-date. We apologize for any errors or omissions.
The Davis Family, Burford As long-time business owners in Brant County, the Davis Family has made a commitment to giving back. For many years they have had a strong connection with the GRCA’s Tree Nursery, which grows and distributes about 200,000 native trees and shrubs annually throughout the watershed.
“We got to know the tree farm as fuel suppliers, and we really support what they do. My father Roger passed away in 2017, and remembering him with a tree was a great fit,” said GRCF Board member Floyd Davis.
With support from the Davis Family, in 2018 important equipment upgrades were funded for the Burford Tree Nursery and the Apps’ Mill Nature Centre.

In 2018, the GRCA adopted a new, three-year Strategic Plan with four priorities:
1. Protecting life and minimizing
property damage from flooding
and erosion;
2. Improving the health of the
Grand River watershed;
3. Connecting people to the
environment through outdoor
experiences;
4. Managing land holdings in a
responsible and sustainable way.
