Update from the Executive; This past February a plea was made to the community for volunteers to step forward to assist the Community Association in moving forward and beyond the difficulties it was experiencing . At this AGM fourteen community members stepped forward to form the newly elected Board of Di-rectors, myself as President/Chairperson of the Blackburn Community Association. We have been an eager group who met very quickly thereafter to assess and understand the struggles that the Association and community hall were experiencing. We worked quickly to develop strategies to get the day to day operations of the hall and programming back on track. The official opening of the Blackburn Community Center was held on May 27, 1990, and we have recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the center. The community hall can accommo-date up to 300 people, has a commercial kitchen and stage, and is well equipped for banquets, parties, workshops and other events. The Blackburn Community Hall is an important example of a community driven building project and for the past 25 plus years this facility has been run by volunteers that hosted many events, youth/adult programming, weddings, etc. We wanted to be sure to protect the hard work of the countless people and families in this community that had not only built but continued to carry this hall over all this time. While the challenges have been vast and at times very overwhelming I am happy to say business operations are back on track and I am so very proud to work with the dedicated people who came forward and those long-time volun-teers to work on this challenge. Special thank you to the AMAZING Sponsors who came to the table with much needed dollars to get the Association in a position to begin connecting and engaging with the stakeholders and to begin planning for the sustainability of the community hall for the next 25 years. We are also em-barking on a Interior Enhancement Project in the hall thanks in part by the funding we have just received from the Northern Development Initiatives Trust Community with their Community Hall and Recreation Facilities Funding program. There are countless ways you can become involved. This facility exists to serve the community as a whole. If you have an idea or questions on how you can become involved please feel free to discuss with the community hall coordinator, Amy Shiels, or myself directly via email at [email protected]. Big Brothers Big Sisters Little Rascals opened its doors on September 7th to a nearly full house! Currently there are 3 spaces available in the After School Care Program and approxi-mately 3 spaces in the Preschool (depending on which days you’re interested in. In the last month our preschoolers have had fun filled mornings, spent outside enjoying the last of summer and inside making crafts and new friends! The after school children have started their swimming field trips and made trips to the Four Seasons pool where they have had a splashing good time. If you are interested in registering in any of the programs offered at the Li’l Rascals facility please call 250.563.7410.
