A GOOD READ

the highly successful formula shethe highly successful formula shehas established and ticks all the right boxes . Told bya nameless narrator, it covers 24 hours in the life ofa doctor in the A&E department of a busy hospital, dealing with the mundane, the extraordinary, thehilarious and the tragic .

All the books are based on research and interviews with insiders, then condensed down into a single day . In Hospital Babylon, this includes two births, a number of deaths, a series of bizarre injuries and some sadly commonplace tragedies, as well as rather a lot of flirting, drug-taking and workplace banter . The pace is relentless – A&E never empties, and as the staff battle to keep waiting times to a minimum, tempers often fray and split-second decisions need to be made . Some cases move in and out quickly and smoothly, while others, like 15 year old Marsha, who doesn’t know she is preg-nant until her baby starts to arrive, or elderly June, who slips in the rain and breaks her hip, are likely to stay with the reader for some time .

There is a serious message here about the con-straints placed on staff by reform of the NHS, andabout the workload that is still expected of a juniordoctor . If nothing else, it will certainly put you of be-ing ill around the first Wednesday in August when

staff traditionally move on to new placements, anda new set of junior doctors arrive fresh-faced andmore than a little confused . As with the other booksin the series this is not for the faint-hearted, inplaces it is stomach turning . But like A&E, the doorskeep opening to admit more and more people andwe move relentlessly on – and I guarantee you willkeep turning the pages as they do .

Simply setout and of course beautifully illustrated, it startsas Gavin and Errol, Sophie and Sushma and theirclassmates make their way to school for their veryfirst day . All of the milestones are shown: findingthe toilets; handing in dinner money; exploring theclassroom – with little description, allowing parentsto talk to their child about each one .

What really makes this stand out though, is the factthat it goes beyond the first day into the second day,the first week, the next week and all the way up tothe end of term and the Christmas play . And the chil-dren aren’t always happy, sometimes they are sad,or sleepy or grumpy, as children are . A whole rangeof new experiences is shown, and every child will beable to find themselves somewhere in these pages .

Paul Mckenzie founder andchairman of London SpartansBasketball club, internationallyrenowned, brings basketball toRedbridge . Paul has worked overthe past 10 years to achieve greatresults both in basketball and in hiswork with youth in the community .In recognition of this he was a 2010finalist nominee for The LondonPeace Award & (EB) Volunteer ofthe Year . Through coaching andcommunity projects he has seenthe value that sport can bring toour youth . Basketball provides agreat opportunity for our youth tonot only become involved in sport, but also to develop much neededlife skills such as leadership skills, determination and commitment . Allof these skills support our youth tobecome well rounded individuals .

London Spartans have workedclosely with thousands of youngpeople, local schools and with theRedbridge Sports DevelopmentTeam . We have boys and girls teamsof all ages that play across thecountry and the capital . Ourcoaching staff are appointed Londonregional representatives by ourgoverning body (England Basketball)and are specialists in youthmentoring through sport .

“Spartans success is built around ourunique approach which provides vitalopportunities for young people toexcel on and off the court”

Life, Basketball and EducationReaching for Sporting Success

Page 17: Find It Here Edition 3

Paul explains what Spartans isall about:

“We are more than just a sportsclub we are a communityorganisation working withyoung people . Our success isled from our ability to connectand challenge young people wework with to do better, becomebetter, in their everyday lives .The 3 principles we teach ourplayers are, to be a goodstudent in class, a good playeron the court and a good person .For most clubs it’s usually aboutthe sport first but for us it’sdifferent .

The club was formed in WalthamForest about seven years ago .Since then, I have been workingin schools around Redbridge forsome time, so more and morestudents were becomingplayers in the club and in 2008we decided to move .

We have a large number ofextremely talented young

players that need the guidanceand discipline to help themachieve their potential . As thestructure of the game here inEngland has got much better, itstill has a long way to improve;for most players in this countrythe dream of earning ascholarship to play overseas ata University in the United Statesor in Europe is common . Thatway they can further theireducation and play at thehighest level and continue toimprove . Through what we do atSpartans we have helped makeit a reality for some, which hastruly been special .”

Special indeed, this year theclub reached the National CupFinals and two of their playersearned scholarships and nowplay at University in the USafter successfully finishing theirA-Levels at college here thissummer .

“Access has been the hardestthing in Redbridge and we have

been finding ways to addressthis . Our Junior Clubs for boysand girls ages 7 -13yrs old, hasspread across the borough andwe now have clubs based inNewbury Park, Ilford &Wanstead area . We also runspecial day camps during theschool holidays . I have parentsall the time telling me thatthey have been looking for abasketball club for their son ordaughter to join but couldn’tfind one, our membership isgrowing fast .

When you bring your childalong to one of our sessionsthey are greeted with a warmand friendly atmosphere .Everybody is made welcomehere at Spartans . For us,basketball is life .”

So why not try it today .

A 3D display is any displaydevice capable of conveying

a stereoscopic perceptionof 3-Ddepth to the viewer . The basicrequirement is to present offsetimages that are displayedseparately to the left andright eye .

Both of these 2-D offset images are then combined in the brain to give the percep-tion of 3-D depth . Although the term “3D” is ubiquitously used, it is important tonote that the presentation of dual 2-D images is distinctly different from displayingan image in three full dimensions .

The most notable difference is that the observer is lacking any freedom of headmovement and freedom to increase information about the 3-dimensional objectsbeing displayed . Holographic displays do not have this limitation, so the term“3D display” fits accurately for such technology .

Similar to how in sound reproduction it is not possible to recreate a full 3-dimension-al sound field merely with two stereophonic speakers, it is likewise an overstate-

ment of capability to refer to dual 2-D images asbeing “3D” . The accurate term “stereoscopic” is

more cumbersome than the common mis-nomer “3D”, which has been entrenchedafter many decades of unquestionedmisuse .

The optical principles of multiview auto-stereoscopy have been known for over

60 years . Practical displays with a highresolution have recently become availablecommercially .

If you were just won-dering –“How does a3D TV work?“,then this guide isperfect for you .

Ever since Hollywoodbegan it’s recent pushtowards 3D with animatedmovies such as Beowulf,Pixar’s brilliant “Up” and ofcourse, most recently with James Cameron’s spectacular “Avatar”, many ofus have begun to fall in love with the 3D movie experience . We perceive theworld around us in 3D, so why should our TV watching be restricted to 2D?While 3D technology in the past was quite primitive resulting in an under-whelming, nausea inducing experience, major consumer electronics com-panies are now betting on the resurgence of 3D and have been working ata furious pace to develop new technologies that can deliver a comfortableand entertaining 3D experience in the comfort of our homes .

3D glasses make the movie or television show you’re watching look like a3-D scene that’s happening right in front of3-D scene that’s happening right in front of

you . With objects flying off the screen and careening in your direction, and creepy

characters reaching out to grab you, wearing 3-D glasses makes you feellike you’re a part of the action - notjust someone sitting there watchinga movie . Considering they have suchhigh entertainment value, you’ll besurprised at how amazingly simple 3-Dglasses are .

P ilates were developed in the early 20thilates were developed in the early 20thcentury and named after the man who

invented them - Joseph Pilates . They are aform of exercise involving abdominals, lowerback, hips, and thighs . The intent is to buildstrength in your core muscle groups to helpimprove your posture, flexibility, and balance .

Anyone can exercise using Pilates . And the ben-efits are the same whether you are an experi-enced athlete or a beginner at the fitness game .If you have a desire to improve your posture, toprevent or treat back pain, gain a better balanceand stability over your body frame, and increase

your flexibility, then Pilates arethe perfect workout routinefor you .

Before you start your Pi-lates routine, do somewarm-up exercises .

After 10-15 minutes of warm ups, if you area beginner or you are not used to a rigorousworkout, perform some beginner exercisesbefore moving on to more advanced Pilates .Chest lifts, roll ups, and one leg circles aregood Pilate exercises for beginners . It’s a goodidea to mix up your routines so that you don’twork on the same muscle groups over andover and ignore others . For instance, your first

Pilates exercise could be a workout foryour abdomen with a follow-upexercise that works on your lowerback . Then, throw in an exercise

that works out your hips and thighs .If possible, choose an exercise that

works out two muscles at once .

The most essential Pilates equipment you’llneed is an exercise mat . You’ll spend a lot of

time on the floor so be sure you get a mat thatpads your body well . You might also investin exercise and toning balls, exercise bands, magic circles, and body rollers .

Before you start your new Pilates work-out routine, learn as much as you can

about them and study a few of the exer-cises before trying to perform them . Get

a good vision of how you will approachthem before you actually try it .

Community Health

Britain is a nation ofbad-back sufferers . Four out

of five of us are affected by chronic lower-backpain during our lives, and according to the Brainand Spine foundation it accounts for 5% of sickdays .

The term ‘bad back’ describes everything from atorn disc to a compressed spine .

Poor posture is the cause of many back problems . Itsounds odd, but the sudden pain we mightexperience when lifting a heavy object is notcaused by the act of lifting, but by the 30-odd yearsof sitting badly that preceded it!

Drivers and office workers are the mostsusceptible to lower back pain .

When we sit at a work station we tendto hunch, forcing our spine into a Cshape . Sitting properly means that yourthighs are parallel to the floor and yourfeet are flat (you may need a thick bookto raise your feet slightly to achievethis) . Your screen should be justbelow eye level so you don’thave to stoop or stretch tosee it . In this position yourspine forms the correct Sshape and your weight isdistributed correctly .

When driving, our backshould be relaxed into thenotch of the seat back, whichshould be angled at 10-15degrees from vertical . Ourelbows should be comfortablybent by 70-80 degrees and ourarms should be relaxed .

Anyone who sits for much of the day might wantto invest in an orthopaedic lumbar support likethe eezzeebak, which can be attached to any chair, including a car seat, and which encourages correctposture, helping to reduce back pain .

Surprisingly, the best treatment for back pain isexercise, not rest . This is because movementincreases the blood supply to the spine joints, nerves and surrounding muscles . Improvingstomach muscle tone helps to support the spineand so reduce back pain . Gentle exercise such aswalking, cycling and swimming is best . Pilates andYoga are also good as they improve core strength .

Osteopaths can be very helpful if pain is acute .Don’t forget that a regular maintenance checkup once every six months or so can keepback-pain at bay . Acupuncture has also been

found to be useful for reducing inflammationand relaxing deep tissue muscles in spasm .

The good news is that only 1% ofback pain cases require surgery, usually for a trapped nerve or adamaged disc .

Problems like tumours orserious nerve damage dooccur, but are extremely rare .However, if you suffer withback pain, it is always a goodidea to book an

examination with your GPprior to making any lifestyle changes .

Why visit the take-awaywhen tastier andhealthier burgers canbe made at home

HOME-MADE BURGERS

Makes 8 good-sized burgersIngredients1kg minced beef

1small onion, finely chopped

4tbsp fine bread crumbs

1 egg, lightly beaten

1red chilli, finely chopped(optional)

1tsp salt

1tsp of your favourite mustardor horse radish sauce

Black pepper to season

2 cloves garlic, crushed

Few slices of chorizo (optional)

MethodPlace the beef in a large bowl and add the remaining ingredients .Mix it all together by hand until just combined .

Divide the mixture into eight and roll each portion into a ball, thenflatten to make the burger shape . You want to leave it about 2 .5cm /1 inch thick so it stays moist when cooked .

The burgers can now be cooked either on a griddle pan or non-stickfrying pan with a drop of oil, or even a barbeque . Pre-heat the fryingpan, griddle pan or barbeque to a medium heat, so that the burgersseal and don’t stick . Add the chorizo, if using, until the slices colour gold, reserve to a plate .

Cook the burgers for about 5 minutes on eachside, turning them once . They should becooked through with no pink bits .

Serve the burgers and chorizo in agood quality bun with loads of saladand relish, and maybe a slice ofcheese (If you’re not using chorizothen try Stilton, as it takes them to awhole new level) .

Cook the burgers for about 5 minutes on each side, turning them once . They should be

As a management trainee working in a very pressurised environment, local resident Benjy Owusu-Daaku has taken to photography to escape

the pressures of life as well as provide a platform to express himself . His firstexperience of creative photography was in 2003 during a rugby tour ofSouth Africa . He instantly fell in love with the beauty of the country and felthe needed to capture his experience in a format that would be unique tohim . Photography was the natural option for him .

“Touring the Cape Coast and seeing so many wonderful sights I really feltthe need to capture them in pictures that reflected my personality .”

Although he had fallen in love with photography the cost of gettingthe equipment required were too much, meaning he was unable topursue his passion . Fortunately the cost of Digital SLRs have becomesubstantially more affordable and he was able to really take his pas-sion to the next level .

After being inspired by works by Henri Cartier-Bresson and MiguelGomez he is currently working on a project to capture the vibrancyof London and its people .

“I have a fascination of people and the urban landscape . As aLondoner I feel that I have the perfect environment to explore thesethemes further, individually or in co-existence .”

His first collection of work, simply called ‘London Explored’ will bedisplayed on his blogspot from 31st October 2011 . Prints of this col-lection will be available for order also on 31st October

A Potted History ofchocolate

Initially in Britain it was served as adrink. During the Industrial Revolutionseveral eminent Quaker families—theCadburys, the Frys, the Rowntrees andthe Terrys - helped to transform the man-ufacture of drinking chocolate.

It was the Fry family who created the first‘eating’ chocolate and Cadbury quicklyfollowed suit. Needless to say this newchocolate innovation was an astoundingsuccess. From it’s initial marketing at an1849 trade fair demand grew and todaythe world consumption of cocoa beans isover 600, 000 tonnes per year. I blamethe Aztecs!

O k, it’s an old joke but it has morethan a ring of truth to it. Chocolate

is sensuous, comforting and utterly deli-cious. What’s not to like?

You may have guessed I’m something ofan addict myself. But where did choco-late come from? Who invented it?

It was the Aztec civilization, deep in theheart of equatorial Central America whofirst cultivated the tree from which choc-olate derives.

The tree is the Theobroma Cacao. Trans-lated this means ‘drink of the gods’ fromTheo (meaning god) and broma (meaningdrink). Originally chocolate was alwaystaken in liquid form.

The Aztecs attributed all manner of pow-ers to chocolate: spiritual wisdom, en-ergy and even enhanced sexual prowess.

Emperor Montezuma was reputed to drinkover fifty flagons of chocolate per day. Healso issued it to all his warriors to fortifythem whilst on military campaigns.

The Spanish explorer Herman Cortesreferred to chocolate as, “The divinedrink..,” he also noted that, “A cup ofthis precious drink enables a man to walkfor a whole day without food.”

The conquistadors ensured that chocolatemade its way back to Spain. From thereit followed the trade routes to NorthernEurope and Britain then back across theAtlantic to America.

A British survey has revealed that nine out of ten people like chocolate. The tenth lies!

I’ll leave the last word with ElaineSherman, the author of The Book ofDivine Indulgence:

Chocolate causes certain endocrineglands to secrete hormones that affectyour feelings and behavior by makingyou happy. Therefore, it counteractsdepression, in turn reducing the stressof depression. Your stress-free lifehelps you maintain a youthful disposi-tion, both physically and mentally. Soeat lots of chocolate!
