How effective areyour reps?

WELCOME...to the September issue of Find It Here.I hope that you all enjoyed the qualityand contents of my premier edition.

I would like to say a very big ‘Thank You’to all our advertisers for their supportand to our readers, especially those whocontacted us with feedback.

The past few weeks have beeneventful with Redbridge like someother areas of London havingbreathed a sigh of relief at the end ofthe riots and disruption. This incidenthas no doubt reinforced the needfor more engagement in community activities by youths. Ourcommunity events pages highlight some activities organised byvarious members of the local community and more can be foundfrom the website: www.redbridge.gov.uk.

Well, it is certainly not all ‘doom and gloom’ as five parks inRedbridge have recently been awarded with the Green Flag awardfor national standards for parks and open spaces. Another causefor celebration of course, is the outstanding performances by theRedbridge schools.

I hope you have all had an enjoyable and relaxing summer and arenow ready for the many interesting challenges of autumn. For thosegoing back to school, our‘Back to School’article will serve as a checklistto help you get organised.

It’s September and back-to-school time. There are lots of new experiences to look forward to, and a couple best avoided. One of these is the dreadedcouple best avoided. One of these is the dreaded head lice, which seem to become more of a prob-lem each year. Even the Prime Minister’s childrenweren’t immune!

About the size of a sesame seed, head lice feedon blood from the scalp, often hiding near the napeof the neck and behind the ears. They pre-fer clean, long hair - much better forclinging to the hair shaft and foreasier transmission (they don’t flyor jump!). An adult louse can lay4 or 5 eggs (nits) a day for up to10 days. These hatch after 7-10days, usually on the top of thehead where it is warm and humid.A louse attaches eggs to the base ofa hair using saliva-based glue. Beforefeeding it injects an anaesthetic into thescalp. Both this and the glue can cause intenseitching.

Insecticide-free remedies are preferable for thosewho suffer from eczema or asthma, young childrenand pregnant or lactating mums, due to the pos-sible side-effects of malathion, permathrin and phe-nothrin. A degree of resistance to these chemicals isalso becoming a problem.

Wet-combing to remove lice and nits using aspecialised comb, such as the Nitty Gritty, with the

addition of hair conditioner or olive oil, is also the best treatment if there are any open sores due to scratching. Clean the comb with an old tooth brushscratching. Clean the comb with an old tooth brush or rinse in water between each combing. Olive oilis useful as it suffocates lice, but it can take a fewwashes before it is completely removed.

Adding a few drops of eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary and neem oils to olive oil, and massag-

ing well into wet hair will further help toweaken the lice. Cover with a towel or

a shower cap and leave on for at leastone hour, then shampoo thorough-ly. Remove the eggs with a combto prevent more lice hatching at alater date, and repeat twice moreat 3/5 day intervals. Always carryout a patch test before using, and

always protect the eyes.Following treatment, the above oils

can be added to shampoos as a natural pre-ventative. Hot wash bedding, and check clothes

and soft toys. Warning others, as the PM did, willalso help! There is no shame in having head lice!

There are a number of herbal treatment lotionsand preventative sprays, such as Delacet, Fairy-tales, Nice ‘n Clear and Not Nice to Lice, availablefrom chemists or online, but wet-combing is stillessential to remove the eggs. Delacet claims to killboth, as does Quit Nits, but these may be tricky tofind in the UK.

Oh No......not nits again!

A GOOD READtHe DIStANt HoURS – KAte moRtoN

Fifty years after it was posted, a letter arrives for Edie Burchill’s mother. Its ef-fect is immediate and obvious, but the two have never shared their secretsand Edie remains in the dark about why this unexpected voice from the pasthas affected her mother so deeply. As she attempts to find out, she discoversa link between the letter and her favourite childhood story, The True Historyof the Mud Man – both of which have originated from Milderhurst Castle, still home to the mysterious and fascinating Blythe sisters.

Morton cleverly juggles a number of narratives in this long and complextale – Edie begins and ends the story, but in between several voices rise convincingly from the page. Each has their own tragedy: Percy Blythe, the eldest sister, inexorably linked to the castle; Saffy, hertwin, dreaming of escape; Juniper, still waiting for her lost lover; and the lover himself, Thomas Cav-ill, doomed never to arrive. Their stories are true and tender and carefully, gradually revealed, withenough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the final pages. Equally vivid are the minorcharacters – even those like Raymond Blythe, who never actually appear to us.

This is a book about love, madness, dreams and the supreme power of the written word. Onceagain, Morton shows how well she can pull the various threads of her tapestry together, drawing uson until we feel we are really there at Milderhurst, watching as the shadows form themselves intoghosts and suggestions. A haunting and beautifully told story, which merits reading and re-reading.

What is it? Impetigo is anextremely common skin

disease, generally caused bystaphylococcus bacteria.

What does it look like? Itappears as a small, itchyred spot, often on the facearound the mouth or nose. It quickly developsinto a blister, containing yellow-gold fluid. Theblister becomes crusty and weeps, and smalleritchy patches often develop around the firstone as the infection spreads outwards.

Who is likely to get it? Children, or those whowork with them, particularly in nursery orschool settings, and especially if they haveeczema. Also people with diabetes or compro-mised immune systems.

How is it treated? GPs generallygive antibiotic cream, or in se-vere cases, oral antibiotics. Re-move the scabs and clean theskin and allow to air-dry beforeapplying any cream.

Can my child still go to school? As impetigo is highly contagious keep them ofschool until the scabs have fallen off and thesores are no longer weeping. If they are on oralantibiotics they are generally considered non-infectious after two days of treatment.

Is impetigo dangerous? No, generally it’s just anuisance, but there is a rare side effect calledglomerulonephritis. This is a kidney disease.Seek medical advice if the sufferer experiencessevere headaches or brown-coloured urine.

Community HealthcHILD oBeSIty

Overweight or obese children have an increased risk of developing a number of health prob-lems. It also increases the likelihood of becoming overweight or obese adults. If overweight

and obesity is treated in childhood, some of these health problems may be prevented or re-versed and your child is more likely to grow into an adult with a healthy weight. One way totreat an overweight or obese child is to look at changes that can be made to their lifestyle. Suchchanges are believed to be more effective when they involve the family as a whole; for exampleeating healthily at mealtimes and physical activities such as bike riding or swimming.

The health risks associated with child obesity and overweightinclude:

• Experience of early onset of puberty• Problems with joints• Problems with breathing /shortness of breath• Developing iron deficiency• Increased chances of growing into an obese or

overweight adult

mAKe tIme FoR BReAKFASt – Have a healthy start to your dayNUtRItIoN

Start the day with a healthy breakfast as breakfast plays an important part of giving your body itspower for the day. Your concentration in school will improve as will your hand-eye co-ordinationand your problem-solving skills. Did you know that by eating a healthy breakfast you are much lesslikely to become obese and diabetic? Why don’t we concentrate on breakfast this time, as it is themost important meal of the day? Here is a list of healthy breakfast you can choose from:

• oatmeal or porridge withfibre and vitamins

• fruit smoothies with lots ofnutrients

• boiled or poached egg on a sliceof wholegrain or wholemeal bread

• If you don’t have time for breakfast, quickly slice an apple and a bananaand take them in a food bag with you

Try a healthy breakfast before you leave for school!Making informed food choices can lead to a drastic improvement in reducing weight. This includescooking from scratch, cutting down on sugary and fatty foods, eating smaller portions, eating break-fast, eating together as a family round a table regularly, not eating in front of the TV, drinking morewater, cut down on fizzy sugary drinks and eating less sweets.

Think of daffodils and you’ll probably think ofthe large yellow variety. They look fabulous

while in flower, but can present some problems forsmall gardens. They are tall, unstable in high winds, heavy rains and snowfall, and they produce masses ofgreen foliage which must be left to die down for sixweeks after flowering. Only then can you shear themoff to ground level.

Miniature narcissi however were made for smallsuburban plots. They are under 12 inches / 30cm talland are much more stable in bad weather, even heavysnow. As a bonus their foliage is neat so not particu-larly unsightly during the dying-down period.

Just like the big varieties, if you plant them nowthey will provide pleasure for many years.

All daffs, be they large or dwarf, need a good start.Make a hole roughly four times deeper than the bulb.It will seem like overkill, but the biggest mistake mostgardeners make with bulbs is shallow planting. Theywill still flower well during the first seasons, but be-cause they are too near the surface, they will find it dif-ficult to take in enough nutrients and water to makereserves for the subsequent years. The result will be ashow of green leaves and not much else!

So plant them deep and they’ll return year onyear, looking more beautiful each time.

Another great way to enjoy miniature narcissiis to plant them in pots. 25cm /10 inch pots areabout the right size. Put some drainage material inthe bottom then fill with potting compost. Plant thebulbs just below the surface then stand the pot in theshelter of a wall. Water the compost when it looks

dry. Come the spring you should enjoy a pot fullof colour. Once they’ve finished flowering you canplant them more deeply outside and they’ll continueto flower each year.

Miniature Narcissi Suggestions

‘Minnow’ - A profusion of multi-headedlemon-yellow flowers.

‘Jetfire’ - Bright orange trumpet and deepyellow petals.

‘Cotinga’ - Dainty ivory flowers with pet-als that look like they’re windswept back-wards and trumpet flushed with apricot.Very unusual.

‘Golden Bells’ - Free-flowering with alarge trumpet.

These are just suggestions. You can’t reallygo wrong with any miniature narcissi. Theonly problem you’ll have is deciding whereto plant them all!
