Prerequisite Course Descriptions

EE4154 Digital and Analog Communication Systems

Nil

This course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of digital communication theory, information theory, signal detection, signal transmission through various channels, and teletraffic theory. Students will learn functional blocks of digital and analog communication systems, sampling theory, line coding, channel capacity, matched filter, transmission lines and optical fibres, microwave and satellite communication systems, network planning and switching systems.

EE4189 Wireless Communications & Mobile Networks

EE3012/IM3001

This course aims to provide basic knowledge on the basics of wireless systems. It introduces you to the theory, limitation, and costs of wireless systems, mainly for VHF and above. You will be taught to analyse the wireless system in terms for various performance degradation due to multipath fading environment. You will learn about various multiple access techniques, cellular systems, including frequency reuse. You will learn to analyse the problems and provide tradeoffs between various link and cellular traffic performances. It gives you a good understanding on the techniques and principles that can be used to improve the performance. The course will cover some examples on the deployed 3G, 4G and 5G network systems. Finally, demonstrations and design examples by using a general-purpose mathematical software package such as MATLAB to design and simulate communication signal processing systems via the laboratory exercises.

EE4477 Embedded Systems & Computer Architecture

EE3002/IM2002

The objective of this course is to provide students with the basic concepts and principles in computer architecture and embedded systems so that they have an in-depth understanding of computer system organizations and embedded systems implementation. Students will also learn how to quantitatively analyze, compare, and evaluate the performance of a computer system and learn to program an embedded platform so that they can apply their theoretical knowledge to practical implementation.
