EYA Social Hackathon 2017
a. GENERAL INFORMATION
In 2017 for the second time, the European Youth Award organized a Social Hackathon to gather young creative minds for the purpose of planning, designing, and creating apps or games with a social focus and within a short span of time. The EYA Social Hackathon Salzburg was two and a half days long and took place at the Univer-
sity of Applied Science Salzburg from March 2-4. In cooperation with FH Salzburg, FHStartup Center Salzburg and the Salzburger Nachrichten, EYA invited people with all kinds of backgrounds (programmers, game designers, artists, business stu-dents or others who were simply interested in being innovative and creating something new) to participate and enjoy productive collaboration and creativity with others. There was no age limit;
working language was English.
International Guest-Coaches from various countries were available for the participants on Friday and Saturday. They gave feedback remotely and enriched the ideas with their expertise and expe-rience. Also local coaches were available onsite to support the participants and the economic course leaded by Petra Meyer provided a pitch training for the teams.
The results of the Social Hackathon were presented during a pitching session at the SN Saal and broadcast live. An interdisciplinary jury evaluated the projects and pitches and selected the best three. The teams were awaited by fantastic non-cash prizes and 3 x 60 minutes coaching sessions by international top social entrepreneurs and start-up founders: Zikry Kholil (Malaysia), Kinga S. Smith (Los Angeles), Tudor Mihailescu (Switzerland/Romania). The projects will be further developed during the summer term by the students of the participating
degree programs to ensure sustainability.
b. THEME
The theme of the Hackathon was: Digital projects in Social Space!
Let´s analyse, discover and innovate social space! In order to support, empower and improve (lo-cal) communities, especially participation of marginalized people, we will focus on social space and
gender | disability | age | family.

Name: SurfMate
Producers: Patrick Obermüller, David Lins, Daniel Witek, Anna
Prommegger
Platform: Website
SurfMate is a project that enables people with spasticity-limited arm/leg movement to navigate the Internet more easily. The Idea behind the Website is to create a platform where the user can get easy access to his or her most frequently visited websites. In Austria every 9 out of 100.000 people is affected by spasticity.
We wanted to facilitate their online behaviour by creating a tool that allows them to navigate the net via an eye-tracker, so using their arms and/or legs is unnec-essary. The site also offers possibilities to extend the product and adapt it for elderly people, which may have eyesight limitations or difficulties operating a computer mouse due to a lack of motor skills. With our site we hope to provide disabled or elderly humans with easy access to the beauty of the World Wide Web to expand their range of experiences.
Name: Griaß di neighbour
Producers: Ebner Markus, Zerlauth Paul, Frenslich Markus, Ste-
fanie Priewasser, Lisa Eckschlager, Doris Ackerl-Hofer, Katrin Rehrl
Platform: Multi-Cross Platform (native and web application)
The goal of „Griaß di, neighbour“, which is a completely new pro-ject in Salzburg, is to improve communal life within the typical small neighbourhood or village street. What makes a great neigh-
bourhood? Key virtues include safety, security, solidarity, vitality, close relationships and friend-ships, open- mindedness, and an everyday life that is relatively easy for its participants. This tool is only made for the residents of a certain type of settlement. It doesn’t matter whether people are young or old, male or female, disabled or not, Austrian or not, or speak German or any other language. Even people who are not able to use a computer have the possibility to access this community via this tool. The essential idea behind our project is “neighbourhood assistance”. That is, young people helping older people and knowledge exchanging among neighbours.

We think, we can motivate them getting in touch with one another, thus becoming more reflective and open minded.
