1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

For Point/Line/Plane my aim was to demonstrate the transition of a point, to a line, to a plane, through the utilisation of folds and material use. Primarily I created a series of folded card to obtain a unifrom pattern that from after coulf be interperted as individual points, forming paralell lines and hence, one large plane. Furthermore, within that, I utilised balsa wood on some of the individual folds to demonstrate the process of Point/Line/Plane with each individual fold. From this assignment I discovered that Point/Line/Plane is a very intricate concept, and can go deeper than one layer.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

For Frame and Infill I wanted to maintain a basing frame structure of 4x4 to be able to experiment more with the infill. With the frame, I wanted to create a no-gravity structure that could be turned any way and still make sesne, for my outcome it is actaully possible to turn the model upside down an still make your way up and down the sturcture. For the infill i wanted to demostrate the fact that it is not permanent, hence I devised a turning infill mechanism at the top of my model to show its temporary nature.

1.3 MASS

For Mass, I was inspired by cold war bunker architecture, and hence designed a very solid and heavy structure that goes undergrund. I created two sections; one with a top glass window, plenty of light and a flat ground, and the other with no light and an uneven ground. The aim of this was to create two entirely different spaces to show the contrast of knowing and not knowing. In the light section, you can easily find your way and don’t have to think twice about where you are going whereas on the darker side you really need to take your time to find your way.

2.1 SITE

The site I chose is not far into the entry of the Island, to the left, where there is a flat grass area, not in the way of any walking path. I wanted to base my design here as I felt the area had been neglected and had no function, thus I wanted to make use of this and draw people into this space to effectively use the area. After standing on the mound I also noticed that there was an interesting view that was cut off by a few narrow trees, creating focal points. I was able to see the boat dock and people coming into the Island. It felt a bit like spying, which is what confirmed my choice, as I felt it really emanated the idea of SECRETS.

2.2 CONCEPT

This is the site from the other side of the river, looking into the island. I wanted to create something that came down the island and looked over the water. This would not only create a nice view pioint for the people inside the structure, but for the people passing on the other side of the river, it would sevre as a point of interest and hopefully draw them to the island, since at the monment itis a very neglected space.

2.3 CONCEPTACLE

For my conceptacle I wanted to demonstrate the basics structure of my design, that is, mass underground, frame overground and Point/Line/Plane used as infill. I wanted to have a wire feature, which here is represented by string, to separate people’s view points just like the trees did for me the first time i vistited the site. I think this will encourage people to appreciate the land and focus on tree features.

2.4 FINAL DESIGN DRAWINGS

For my final design, I wanted to create a few particular spaces for different people at a time, and highlight the idea of sharing secrets. Poin A is a place for the more adventurous type, where you can climb down and peek into a non-accessable place, where a recording is creepig up. Looking down into that space is like a secret as only the people in that space can see it. There is hence a sharing point between point A and B where people from A can share their experience and vice versa. Point B is more of a tight underground and almost claustrophobic experience. Point C is for height, with the view as the conversation starter when sharing, and point D focuses on the river and has that ‘spying’ nature.

3.0 REFLECTION

Throughout the semester, the three modules have aided in my design in creating more complex ideas and functions for a structure. For my final design, i have attempted to incorporate all three modules within my Herring Island structure. I have learnt to incorporate the site into my work to make my design as fitting for the area as possible. It has been very eductaional as Point/Line/Plane, Mass and Frame & Infill are concepts that will come in useful on future projects. To improve my design I think it would be important to create a better connection between all three zones so that the experience is smoother and makes a little more sense.
