Point, line and plane are basic elements of 3 dimension. They are interdepe-dent to each other, while they are different in form.

My concept for this design comes from this integration and contradictory nature among the three forms.

Columns represent points from top view, they are the boundary and guid-ance of the path.

Columns can also be lines from another perspective, they define up and downs of the path.

The path is the plane, which is concrete, but also being defined by other elements.

15

Mass to me is concrete, heavy and even overwhelming.

The focus of the drawing is to provide an experience that is on the fine line between brightness and darkness.

When people get underground, they step further down on the tops of the columns. Meanwhile, the light comes through the ground onto the columns.

The bottom of the space would be an area that makes people feel pressure and even frightened: there are several huge columns in front of them and there is barely light there.

Frame and infill opens the opportunity for combining hiding and exposing together.

In this case, hiding is where is filled which blocks people’s view towards out-side the structure. On the other hand, exposing is where is not filled, which can be considered as a transition between outside and the structure.

The view is blocked by infills, therefore, it induces people to climb up the stairs to gain a better view.

As a viewing deck, it should not only faciliate people to have a view, but also raise people’s desire to have a better view.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

The site is a place that is close to the main path but not next to it. Hence, it is exposed enough to be discovered and not so hidden that can be ignored.

The topography of the location is quite steep, which facilitates the underground part of design. Transition between above ground and underground could be interesting.

Concetacle is about two concrete segements joined together by a translucent material. The transculency could make people wonder what is inside of the object.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

Deriving from the definition in the dictionary, there are two parties in a secret: insiders, people who know or are getting to know the secret and outsiders, who do not know the secret or have no access to the secret at all.

Secrets are mysterious and seductive. My design aims to realise the teasing and seducing effect of secret in architectural way.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The feedback of the development suggests that this was a very stuctural and musculine piece of architecture. It has strength in simplicity but also needs to be added more depth and complexity.

Spatially, the glass on the top would be drawing all attention from people, thus the teasing and seducing effect of translucency material on the sides could be neglected.

Furthermore, circulation needs to be considerated in more detail.

3.0 REFLECTION

During the learning of the three tectonics, I have not only learnt these tectonics themselves, but also more importantly, get to know and practice how the whole design process goes. The exercises gave us opportunities to work like an actual architect, dealing with architectutral problems and also time management, communication and presentation, which could be fairly valuable experience.

By the feedback given and my own experience during this subject, I think a lot of depth is needed to add in my design process. This could be the result of my lack of artistic/architectutral background. This also warns me to think like an architect and completely implement design process rather than randomly having an idea without further research, just like what I tried to do in the final project: come up with a strong and interesting idea and realise it in an architect’s manner.
