An ‘Urban Edge Church’ Humanitarian Initiative

Dear Pastor Donovan

I sincerely hope this reaches you personally, but if not, I hope that whoever reads this presents the

proposal to you. I am a huge fan of yours and you inspire me as you do so many others to go out

and make a difference.

We would like to inform the Urban Edge Initiative of an opportunity to make yet another positive

impact on the lives of less fortunate people in South Africa, Africa, many of whom as you are aware,

do not have access to basic services that could dramatically improve their quality of life.

Sadly, the children suffer. We carried out some research and employed four unemployed

individuals who visited schools and got the headmasters and teachers to officially document and

confirm in writing all children that are still studying by candlelight. In just a hand full of schools in

two of our provinces in South Africa, we listed 5000 children with no basic electricity what so ever.

I have enclosed an outline proposal that describes a unique, award-winning device that could

transform the lives of these and those living in poverty in Africa.

We have approached you, Pastor Donovan, as we believe you have the unique ability and network to

reach, alleviate and aid disadvantaged communities, allowing them to work towards upliftment and

to achieve their full potential.

We would be delighted to discuss these ideas with you or to send you further information. I can be

reached on the email and Cell / Tel numbers below, and I would gladly forward a sample unit for

your testing and approval. Thank you so much for considering this proposal, and I look forward to

hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

THE GENIE LAMP

Eye-on-design cc, A BEE entity, developed a unique, novel method of providing a basic inexpensive alternate light source, with cell phone charger – The magic Electronic Genie Lamp.

This unit will replace candles for people living in informal settlements and low cost housing. This removes the risk of fires caused by the paraffin lamps and candles which results in many deaths and considerable destruction of property in poorer communities, particularly during the winter months. This lamp was a winner in the professional and overall category in Eskom’s* energy efficiency Design competition, 2004. The lamp is rechargeable with AC, DC or solar energy. It does not use the less effective LED lighting feature but the energy saving 12 volt, 11-watt energy saving globe, which is readily available.

These units are designed for virtually any environment where local electricity supply is inconsistent, unreliable or unavailable. The Genie lamp is ideal for rural settlements, farms, informal and low cost homes, hospitals, police stations, health clinics, community centres, emergency instances, refugee camps and relief/disaster aid centres.

It is a necessity for every non-electrified home, especially to add value and uplift the quality of life of each child and adult, eg for children studying by candlelight or paraffin lanterns.

Introduction: As you are aware, in Malawi, the Sudan and other parts of Africa and other developing countries, millions of families are living in squatter conditions without many of the basic amenities enjoyed by more advantaged communities. For example, many families live in temporary makeshift tin shacks without electricity, running water, toilets or telephone lines. As a result, they are forced to rely on paraffin lamps and candles for light, and often have to walk long distances to access clean water and toilet facilities. We are a company trying to improve the lives of people who must survive and function in these harsh living conditions. Our innovative product is a lamp that is solar powered, portable, and able to provide free light to the poor. It can also be utilised to charge mobile phones, which are often the only form of communication in rural locations The lamp can be utilised in any environment, but will be most useful for those living in informal housing, refugee camps, or those working in clinics etc where there is no electricity supply. In Africa most, if not all, of the beneficiaries will be persons who live in informal settlements and are extremely poor. These individuals can be provided with access to a cheap, alternative light source, with all of the benefits that this creates. Uniqueness of Design: The lamp is solar powered with a short charge time. Charge time is only 6 - 8 hours by means of a highly manageable and portable solar panel for a full 8 - 10 hour operation.

It is extremely user friendly and simple to operate. The unit has a unique swivel handle and the hemphispherical radiation pattern is unique. The lamp is portable and has a handle, which allows it to be easily carried or moved to any location.

When the lamp is fully charged, it can be stored away for up to 4 months and still guarantees 8 hours of light upon switch on. The intensity of light is equivalent to 50 watts of white light. It has additional applications; notably, it can charge electrical items such as cell phones.

*(South Africa’s large electricity utility /supplier).

Benefits of the lamp: The benefits of the lamp should be evident, but the following features are perhaps most important.

1 Safety: The lamp is a safe alternative to existing light sources. It removes the risk of fires caused by the paraffin lamps and candles, which result in many deaths and considerable destruction of property in poorer communities, particularly during the winter months. Indeed, such fires are almost inevitable when these traditional light sources are used by families living in confined spaces, usually single rooms, with children, animals etc.

2 Affordability: The lamp is affordable. Being solar powered, it has no running costs, meaning that poorer families are able to enjoy the benefits and safety of light at minimal cost. The cost of a candle varies between ZAR 1.50 to ZAR 2.50 in South Africa and has a life span of a maximum of 10 hours. In contrast, the Genie lamp costs nothing to charge and can burn up to 12 hrs. Per day and last for an indefinite period. Therefore, the lamp is not only a safer, but also a cheaper option.

3 Environmental impact: The lamp is also an environmentally sound option, causing no pollution to the environment. All parts are 100% recyclable. The utilisation of solar energy panel will relieve pressure on the National Energy Electricity Grid for continuous electricity.

4 Improving quality of life: The lamp will allow those living in temporary housing (with no electricity) to enjoy the benefits of something taken for granted by many in developed countries: the basic right to light. Families can live (cook, do schoolwork etc) without the dangers and costs associated with the light sources that are currently used.

Summary of lamp features:

This lamp is relatively brighter than other lanterns (the intensity of the light is equivalent to 50W of white light) and lasts much longer if not indefinitely.

It has a unique electronic battery monitoring circuit with a special electronic design.

The charge time on the lamp is less than 8 hrs. & provides light/power for 12hrs

The unit has a unique swivel handle.

The hemispherical radiation pattern is unique.

The lamp is very low maintenance.

The Way Forward:

Each lamp including, phone charger & 220V battery charger & solar panel costs ±R900

With the curse of corruption infiltrating relief organizations and government departments, mishandling of donation funds are inevitable.

We feel that this concept of providing a basic necessity and enriching the poor and knowing where your donation is being utilized is the way forward.

The lamp will/can have large non-removable vinyl stickers (sample picture attached) on both sides, with text and a picture of the donor.

Text could include:
