Should we all wear MASKS?

BonjourBijou©2019

Whether more people should wear masks has become one of the biggest DEBATES of the coronavirus pandemic. Respiratory droplets are the main way the coronavirus spreads. Could enforcing the public to wear masks help to control COVID-19 transmission at the community level?

NOT wearing MASKSIt is NOT recommended for thegeneral public to wear masks, instead we need to continue withsocial distancing. There is ashortage of medical masks forhealth care workers and there willbe even fewer if the public startsbuying them. Most masks, especiallyhomemade ones, won’t protectagainst smaller particles. Also, wearing a face mask gives people a“false sense of security” becausethere are risks for the public whodon’t have properly fitted masks orwho improperly put them on or takethem off. There are concerns thatwearing a mask improperly canincrease your risk of getting thevirus. If you are NOT sick, youshould not need a facemask unlessyou are caring for someone who issick.

The NEED to wear MASKSMasks are a controversial thingright now because we’re trying topreserve this scarce resource. However, in countries such asAustria, the Czech Republic andSlovakia, face coverings are nowmandatory in public. There is anargument that everyone is apotential spreader of the virus andthat is why we have been going intoisolation. Some hospitals have nowmandated that all health careworkers even those not treatingCOVID-19 patients, need to wearmasks. Since people with nosymptoms can spread the virus, more masks could help stop thespread of COVID-19. If we are beingtaught on proper hand-washingtechniques and proper ways ofphysical distancing, why not teachthe public about how to properlywear a mask?

Both side of the debate still agree that MASKS will only be effective in helping to slow the spread of COVID-19 if used in addition to proper handwashing and social distancing.

Different types of MASKS:

Not all masks offer the same protection.

N95s (respirators)

N95s are government-approved masks thatprotect someone from95% of particles in theair. They are designed

to keep out large droplets andsmall particle aerosols out. Theyfit snug on the face so thatparticles can’t slip in through thesides. They are most effectivewhen used once. But due toshortages, nurses and doctorshave been reusing them.

SURGICAL MASKSThese masks are usuallyworn by operating roompersonnel during surgicalprocedures and help protectagainst large droplets. Theyare more loose fitting, singleuse and do not protectagainst smaller particles inthe air. Due to shortages, they are being used by healthcare workers, caregivers andpeople who are sick.

FABRIC or HOME-MADE MASKSThey may offer some protection against large droplets but it is still unknown how effective they are. They do not protect against small particles in the air. They may require frequent adjustments, increasing the amount of times your hands come in contact with your face and increasing the possibility of infected yourself. In a recent study, they were three times less effective than surgical masks.

There are three main types of masks:
