IDAHO NRCS (4-Rs) Fertilizer Application Jobsheet 1a (COMMERCIAL FERTILIZER) Version 2.1.4 4-2012
THE NUTRIENT VALUES GENERATED BY THIS WORKSHEET ARE NOT FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS! The values calculated in the tables are guides for NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT PLANNING as published in the U OF IDAHO Fertilizer guides
and addresses the New Nutrient Management Strategy (right source, rate, timing and placement of commercial fertilizers). Always check the values generated by this spreadsheet with the specific crop's fertilizer guide.

Commercial fertilizer application rate, method and timing of application play a critical role in reducing the potential for off-site risks to water and air quality. Placement and timing in relationship to the
transport risk (water and wind) are key elements in developing a good nutrient management strategy.

Runoff Class Low Little surface runoff occurs from storm events. Low risk of soluble and/or sediment-attached nutrient loss.
Irrigation Runoff Index Very Low Little surface runoff occurs from irrigation. Low risk of soluble and/or sediment-attached nutrient loss.
Runoff BMPs (level of use, not risk) Medium REQUIRED if runoff occurs: Apply in-field conservation practices that reduce soil erosion and runoff.
Irrigation Index (for deep percolation) Low Good water management. Leaching during the growing season is minimized.
Leaching Index (non-growing season risk) Very Low Low potential for leaching during the non-growing season.
Distance Very Low Increased distance to surface water reduces transport risk
Soil Properties Low Soils with slow infiltration/water transmission. Reduced risk of leaching.
Soil Erosion Low Erosion probably less than T. Recommendation: Follow good soil conservation practices

Climatic, Soils and Management Risk Factors from INTRA OR "Water Management and Soils and Landform" Pages
It is intended that nutrient management plans developed from this standard be used to help producers improve or maintain their level of management and expertise as it relates to the application of nutrients on the lands they own and/or control. The NMP shall specify the source, amount, timing and method of application of nutrients on each field to achieve realistic production goals, while minimizing movement of nutrients and other potential contaminants to surface and/or ground waters

Additional Comments or Practices Needed:
* Review nutrient management plans annually to determine if significant changes in the operation have occurred that will affect the overall nutrient management plan. Significant changes include increases/decreases in applciation area by 10%, change in crop or crop rotation, change in irrigation system, or new designation as a sensitive area.* Maintain field records for a minimum of five years. As applicable, records should include:• Soil, plant tissue, organic, and water test results as collected and recommendations for nutrient application.• Quantities, analyses and sources of nutrients applied.• Approximate dates and methods by which nutrients were applied.• Weather conditions and soil moisture at the time of application; lapsed time to manure incorporation, rainfall or irrigation event.• Crops planted, planting and harvest dates, yields, and crop residues removed.• Dates of annual review and person performing the review and recommendations that resulted from the review.• Any additional information as required by this standard, (e.g., site vulnerability, risk assessment, biosolids application records, and other appropriate cautions and discussions).• Irrigation water management evaluations as applicable.• Documentation of the actual rate at which nutrients were applied. When the actual rates used differ from the recommended and planned rates, records will indicate the rationale.* Workers should be protected from and avoid unnecessary contact with chemical fertilizers and organic by-products. Protection should include the use of protective clothing when working with plant nutrients. Extra caution must be taken when handling ammonia sources of nutrients, or when dealing with organic wastes stored in unventilated enclosures.
* Protect fertilizer and organic by-product storage facilities from weather and accidental leakage or spillage. Storage of manure, fertilizers and cleaning of application equipment should be done away from a wellhead.
* Backflow protection devices shall be installed according to Idaho chemigation requirements when using irrigation systems for application or distribution of liquid waste or commercial fertilizer.
* Store and dispose of material generated from cleaning nutrient application equipment properly. Excess material should be collected and stored, or field applied in an appropriate manner. Excess material should not be applied on areas of high potential risk for runoff and leaching.* Dispose or recycle nutrient containers according to state and local guidelines or regulations.* Calibrate application equipment to ensure uniform distribution of material at planned rates

Commercial fertilizer application rate, method and timing of application play a critical role in reducing the potential for off-site risks to water and air quality. Placement and timing in relationship to the transport risk (water and wind) are key elements in developing a good nutrient management strategy.
