This place inspires me.IN 2000, after seven years of pushing my way through the overcrowded streets of New York City, I came home to Lancaster County.
When I first headed to the Big Apple — fresh out of college and with my portfolio in hand — I never intended to return to the picturesque yet monotonous surroundings of my childhood. After a few moments (months) of panic, and several years of keeping ties and clients in NYC, I took a deep breath, took a look around and saw what I had never seen before. A community rich in history and culture. Streets filled with inspiring people and stories. Minds opening to opportunity. A place ripe for a rennaisance.
Things were changing in the City of Lancaster and I wanted to be a part of it. Young creatives were setting up shop. Tech companies were moving to town. Galleries were sprouting up. Developers were taking notice.
It was 2005.
The City has come a long way in the past seven years. There have been bold leadership decisions and smart thinking from revolutionaries like Dennis Cox, the founder of Gallery Row, and many others. These changes — in the arts sector and beyond — have been steadily moving our City forward.
I am proud to be a part of this thriving creative community. I am proud to call myself a Lancasterian.

Peppered through this conversation are mentions of the Fulton Theatre, Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, Demuth Museum and the Lancaster Museum of Art — all partners in the Lancaster City Arts regional and out-of-state campaigns coordinated by LancasterARTS.
Since opening its doors in 2007, LancasterARTS has proudly supported the creative community in the City of Lancaster. Working behind the scenes and from the ground up, this non-profit organization has successfully branded the City as a regional arts destination. Tens of thousands seek out its comprehensive website about the arts annually, especially on First Fridays. Thousands more contact the office with a wide range of arts-related inquiries.
We all know that the arts enrich our intellectual, emotional and interpersonal lives. When viewed through a hierarchy of needs, it’s easy to dismiss the arts as pure luxury — icing on the cake of more serious life pursuits. But the arts in Lancaster have real economic bite. A study commissioned by LancasterARTS in 2009 found that the arts in Lancaster generate $72 million in economic flows and 1,100 full-time-equivalent jobs. Enriching, yes … in so many ways.
LancasterARTS was strategically established to be a hybrid not-for-profit that would evolve based on changing needs and realities. The soul of LancasterARTS has always been about the arts, the artists and the arts community — and how best to promote and support them. LancasterARTS has adapted as needed throughout the last five years, and, by design, it will continue to evolve.

ROBERT A. NELSON IS INSPIRED BY JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING —Flash Gordon, American history, Buck Rogers and the Wizard of Oz. His drawings are just a little bit bizarre, and he likes them like that.
As a highly respected contemporary painter, sculptor, printmaker and collage artist, Robert A. Nelson, 86, has created works of art included in the permanent collections of many major museums, including the Smithsonian Institute, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and Boston's DeCordova Museum.
His illustration-style drawings, both strangely comical and compellingly uncomfortable, will be displayed in an exhibit at Lancaster’s own CityFolk gallery — opening October 4th with a premier Thursday reception from 5-8pm to kick off First Friday and ArtWalk weekend. “Little People” runs through October 31st. As a resident artist, Robert’s work can also be found throughout the year at CityFolk. Robert is a retired art professor from
Millersville University where he spent 16 years teaching, and where he was granted the rank of Professor Emeritus. “I’ve had the pleasure of instructing incredibly fine students who have gone on to wonderful things.” Dr. Nelson and his wife, Louise, now reside on a 65-acre Oregon farm. Surrounded by beautiful northwestern farmland and their beloved horses and dogs, their hearts still beat for Lancaster County. As his wife expressed: “Oh, Lancaster is home for us.”

The City of Lancaster is special. It has the ability to inspire and energize those who live, work and visit. There is an intangible undercurrent of creativity. Those who live and work
in the City see the revitalization; those who visit it can sense the City is on the move. And it’s our City’s creative thinkers who are driving this change.
“Creatives” are not necessarily of or from the art world, they are individuals who understand that motivation, disruptive innovation and bending of rules and conventions are necessary to create something
that is effective, special and impactful. They understand that creative ideation is the easy part. Real visionaries know that execution of those ideas takes hard work and tenacity —
the difference between wishing and wanting and accomplishments and success.
The four Creatives highlighted on the following pages have different backgrounds, different jobs and work in entirely different industries. Yet each has demonstrated how their creative thinking can
catalyze revolutionary change and can contribute to the City’s vibrancy and success. Meet just a few of the Creative Visionaries who are making a difference in the City of Lancaster.

People are sometimes shocked when I say I incorporate creativity into strategic planning. How can creativity — something so fun and vibrant — be part of a process that is seemingly dull and tedious? At E4, a strategic consultancy, we use creativity in every aspect of our work, combining wisdom from a variety of fields to guide companies as they envision and implement groundbreaking paths forward.
Over the last 23 years, we have significantly redesigned our strategic planning process three times. Our latest innovations focus on how we communicate our ideas and inspire a culture of strategic thinking and action that leads to lasting organizational alignment. Clients are working in a fast-paced unforgiving world. Our goal is to communicate with graphics and word pictures, so points are made more quickly, are easier to understand and facilitate creativity. Most of our clients think primarily in terms of numbers and words, but we think in concepts and philosophies and possibilities. We use creative means to inspire and ignite visions of an organization’s future because that’s what motivates action and impact.
When E4 moved to Lancaster seven years ago, we found everything we were looking for but thought we’d only find in a larger city: smart people, unique points of view, easy networking, an arts scene and abundant creativity. It’s one thing to be in a place with all of these assets; it’s another to have ready access to them. Lancaster is a manageable city; it’s intimate. Connections form organically here.
We love this city and are committed to paying it forward. E4 has assisted the City of Lancaster in developing its first ever strategic plan. We helped to design a hybrid organization that promotes the arts (LancasterARTS) and we have introduced several not-for-profits to new planning concepts and organizational alignment strategies. This community compels individuals to contribute to the wellbeing of their city, and in turn the city strengthens and inspires the community.

Looking across Duke Street from City Hall, you’ll see a Poetry Paths installation of an Emily Dickinson piece that inspires us to recognize the potential of the world around us. If we take our eyes off the gum on the sidewalk and look around, we’ll see that Lancaster is a beautiful place, full of possibilities. Our residents and our diverse neighborhoods reflect that beauty, and our creative artists express that possibility in their work.
All too often, success is measured in ways that stifle vision, limit creativity and offer temporary fixes instead of real solutions.
In City government, we try to raise expectations of government because we know that our successors — no matter who they are — will be held to that high standard. We’ve established a workforce culture that strives to provide excellent customer service. Our leadership team makes decisions based on what we believe is best for the greater good —without consideration of short-term political consequences. Our strategic plan lays out our vision for the future: What do we want to accomplish? How will we get there? How do we measure our success? How will we be held accountable?
We don’t always get it right and it’s rarely simple or easy, but we know where we want to go. There’s an old proverb that says “A man who doesn’t know where he’s going doesn’t need a map.” Knowing where we’re going requires a vision, a plan and a belief in possibility. With a clear vision, possibilities become realities.

Vibrant gathering places are crucial to breed those organic, authentic connections that support acts of initiative and creation. When I first came to Lancaster it didn’t take long to realize that this was a city filled with creative people in need of a center.
Just a few years ago, PCA&D was a tiny, unaccredited diploma program in a rented space. Now we are a 4-year accredited college granting degrees in fine arts, graphic design, illustration and photography. Students from eight states enroll in our degree programs. We own two buildings and have raised the funds to purchase the park across the street.
The City of Lancaster is our campus. Faculty, staff, alumni and their families have exponentially increased the number of creative people in Lancaster. We host more than a thousand people at each of our gallery openings. Influential artists and designers visit us from all over the country and leave charmed by the City and make plans to return.
Creativity feeds creativity. PCA&D is continually inspired by the creative community here and we’re forging ahead with plans to increase the size and scope of our vision — together.

BORN AND RAISED IN ARGENTINA, Nadina Feakins has tango in her blood and a passion for dance that she wants to share with Lancaster. She and her partner Fan Xi founded the Argentine Tango Club of Lancaster a year ago to nurture a local tango community that celebrates Argentine culture.
“Tango is much more than a dance. Once you hit that connection with your partner, you’re hooked for life,” says Nadina. Tango has been called an embrace in movement. Unlike many ballroom dance styles, it’s an improvised, social dance. There are shows and performances, of course; but it’s the personal connection and the sweet sorrow of the music that keep people coming back.
“We do this for passion,” says Nadina. She wants the Club to give back to the community. When her mother-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer, she helped organize “Dancing for Tatas” to raise money for the American Cancer Society. She and Fan also give classes to kids from the local organization ‘Children Deserve a Chance.’
“The wonderful thing about tango is that you don’t have to be the best dancer or at a young age to become great at it,” she says.
“ Once you hit that connection with your partner, you’re hooked for life.”

A ballet dancer since the age of four, Nadina says tango has given her the freedom and peace that comes with letting go of formal choreography and trusting the embrace, moment by moment: “its all about feeling the music and communicating a language that is unspoken.”
Tango is known as a dramatic dance of love and passion, but it turns out its most powerful expression may not be romantic after all. For dancers, the Argentine Tango Club is a powerful source of support, friendship and community. “The club has become a second family to me,” says Nadina. “It’s brought me so much happiness.”

Ashley Ambrosini is against anything that tries too hard to look perfect — and that’s why she calls her new shoe and handbag store on Prince Street “Undone.” She says her style is what happens when you start with a classic, do an overhaul and make it something that stands out.
At Undone, Ashley Ambrosini’s new boutique on Prince Street, bold style touches every inch of the store. The line between retail and art is blurred. What you’ll discover at Undone is everything from high quality leather goods and jewelry, to striking wedges and standout boots — displayed in a gallery of a store.
In the windows of Undone, a flock of white paper doves hovers above heels dashed at angles on pedestals; the perfect and slightly surrealist addition to this central stretch of Prince Street.
The entire store is meant to be an experience: “you have to take your time and discover things.”Ashley says she loves selling shoes and accessories because “they’re a good way to ease into expressing yourself differently since you don’t have to change your whole look.” She sells signature pieces that can transform a simple outfit into a creative outlet.
Floating in the center of the store are countless, dimmed bulbs hanging from an industrial style chandelier Ambrosini designed herself. She wants the store to feel warm, inviting and comfortable; in short, somewhere you want to hang out and craft your own unique style.

HER FANS SAY HER VOICE IS LIKE CHAMPAGNE: SMOOTH AND BUBBLY, BUT WITH A BIT OF A BITE. Dana Alexandra takes everything she’s learned about life and spills it out through her music. “I’m a seriously good spiller. I have a pretty big mouth.”
“My goal is to be as honest as possible because there are things you can get away with saying if they are put in a song.”
Dana’s sound is part blue-eyed soul, hometown indie and pop-rock; tinged with a twang from another time. It’s a little folksy and a little Katy Perry.
A lot of her songs are meant to empower. “I’m definitely a girl’s girl. I like writing songs women can relate to so they know they’re not alone,” says Dana. “Let’s go kick some serious booty together!”
After a few years of traveling and performing in Philly, Boston, Virginia Beach and New York, she says she craved comfortable and moved back to her hometown of Stewartstown, but now lives in York.
“There’s no place like it. I love that you can be somewhere cultural and have really good Indian food and then go on a hike in the middle of nowhere all in the same day.”
Wherever she goes to perform, she says she’s proud to represent Central PA. “I love it here. It’s home!”
So what’s next for Dana? More writing, more dancing, more singing, more soul. She’s working on songs for herself and also writes for other musicians and performs around the region. “I like to have fun making my music.”

POWER PACKS PROJECT ASSETS LANCASTER GIRLS ON THE RUN
Power Packs Project partners with eligible families to provide weekend food and nutritional education so that families are empowered and children thrive. Power Packs started in 2005 in Lancaster with the recognition that many children and their families were having trouble making ends meet through the weekend. Power Packs has grown from one school to twenty-one schools today. Ingredients, recipes and tips are packed by volunteers for about 620 families per week, 2,200 people in five local school districts.

Assets Lancaster provides business support services to aspiring entrepreneurs with the ultimate goal of helping to change lives and promote economic development through business ownership. Established in 1993, Assets has worked with over 1,300 entrepreneurs and has helped clients start hundreds of businesses and create hundreds of local jobs. Assets’ approach centers on the involvement of volunteer mentors who are small business owners in Lancaster. All services are provided in English and Spanish.

Girls on the Run gives girls in 3-8th grades, their coaches and volunteers the tools to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, recognize their unique gifts and activate their power! FOR SUSAN GOTTLIEB, painting, teaching and traveling have always gone together.
Making her first overseas trip in the early 1980s, Susan led a group of high school art students to Italy, traveling the boot from north to south. With that one transformative experience, Susan was hooked: “I decided that I needed to go back. It took three years to save the money to return to Rome, but I did it.”
Knowing that the full immersion she was longing for would require a personal connection with a local, Susan remembers, “I needed a place to land, ultimately finding a home with a doting, traditional Italian nonna named Lidia. She was 72.
“ Many people think of me as the artist who travels and comes home to paint what she saw. To me, it’s so much more than that.”
I was 27.” Susan stayed with Lidia until she was ready to launch out on her own, ultimately sharing an apartment with three other expatriate women. “I spent my time painting, traveling and learning. I became an insider really fast.”
Susan’s soon-to-be-released The Skin of the Milk: A Roman Sketchbook is a “love letter” to the Eternal City. It is a celebration of the passionate life, finding wonder in the great and the small and holding oneself open to possibility. This book provides a glimpse into Susan’s travels with photos, sketches, artwork, recipes, stories and more. Each turn of the page offers another experiential taste of Rome. A limited edition of 200 hand-marked art books premiers at the Ware Center September 7th.

DICK WHITSON IS ONE OF THOSE FORTUNATE SOULS who has known since early childhood what he wanted to do. As he puts it: “Nothing else ever came into consideration.”
Though he loved every day of a 40-year career in the advertising design business, retirement has allowed Dick to find more time and passion to focus exclusively on his painting.
“I paint for my own satisfaction. If I’m happy with a painting, I don’t really care what anybody else thinks. If I’m not satisfied, it doesn’t matter who else may like it — and, for me, selling is not a motivating factor.”
As such, Dick is free to create fantastical works of art to his own specifications — works that, as it turns out, people are very eager to own.
A member at Lancaster’s Red Raven Art Company, Dick is one of the gallery’s top-selling artists. Red Raven manager Lee Lovett describes him with great affection:
“Dick Whitson is one of Lancaster’s best kept secrets. He is fearless in his work, and moves easily from one series to the next, from one medium to the next. People really respond to and pick up on his energy and talent.”
In his recent series, “In a Far Out Kingdom,” the artist approaches traditional fairytale characters with a wink, giving his beautifully executed oils titles like “Rapunzel: Nobody is climbing anybody’s hair! Go find a ladder or something.”
With a twinkle in his eye, Dick reveals: “The titles are as much fun to create as the paintings.”

VISITORS WALKING INTO CINDY SCHLOSSER’S Gallery on Market discover not only a collection of painted wooden bowls, antique door panels and reclaimed window shutters, but also an artist with a joyful, infectious smile and a calling to transmit a spirit of love & laughter to the people of Lancaster.
Not long ago, a homeless couple wandered in and asked Cindy to play a song for them on the piano in the corner of her studio. Playing a song by J.J. Heller, Cindy sang words that described the love she shares with broken people:
Who will love me for me? Not for what I have done or what I will become Who will love me for me?
By the end of the song, Cindy said, they were crying.
“My desire is to spread love, joy and peace in the heart of the city,” explains Cindy. “I want to let those who enter my gallery feel valued, no matter who they are.”

FOR ARTIST FREIMAN STOLTZFUS, the most satisfying aspect of his work is when he’s lost in the creation of a painting or sculpture. While much of his work contains recurrent themes of seasons, music and geometric patterns that speak to the measure of our days, Freiman revels in those creative moments that transcend time and space.
“Those moments feel to me like a prayer or meditation — both deeply relaxing and intensely stimulating. It’s this powerful experience of concentration that feels like stepping outside time, and it really is the best part of the process.”
Like a small chapel, there’s a peacefulness within his Prince Street gallery that allows visitors to recalibrate. As Freiman explains, “Art always finds a way to correct the imbalances in each age, a way to set things right.”
Yet the transcendent qualities of Freiman’s art belie the enormous work and drive required of the artist.
“The creative life is not for the faint of heart,” he says. “It will knock you off your feet. It takes courage, focus and stamina.”
But in spite of the challenges of this type of work, the artist recognizes it as a life-changing endeavor: “I have thought many times that I didn’t choose art — it chose me. And it has saved my life, opening me to thrilling new ideas, people and adventures that I would have avoided in my naturally-reserved state.”

JUST DAYS BEFORE THE UNVEILING OF CHRISTIANE DAVID’S NEWEST SERIES “Candice’s World,” freshly-painted canvases featuring a colorful turbaned figure were resting against each other in the artist’s bright, sunny studio. This new collection of oil paintings, full of color and unique sensuality, were inspired by the realization that Christiane’s daughter, the model for these works, is taking on life as a grown woman.
As an attentive viewer might surmise from the subject’s colorful and carefully-arranged headscarves, Candice is currently in treatment for cancer. With her daughter and muse fighting to regain full health (thankfully, Candice’s condition was detected early and the prognosis is good), Christiane notes that her daughter has developed a new appreciation for life.
“Candice is blooming.” It seems only natural, then, that Christiane — best known for her paintings of fiery poppies and vibrant blossoms — recently turned her artistic focus to this flower most dear to her heart.
As a mother, Christiane has painted and sketched Candice many times prior to this new series, but these works were primarily of her daughter as a girl. In this series of paintings, Christiane observes that Candice is emerging as a new person: “I look at her and say, ‘My, God. I made a woman.’”

Christiane turns to the experiences of life for artistic inspiration.

Liz HessACCORDING TO LIZ HESS, all children love to draw or paint. They are all artists. It’s only as they grow older that some lose this love of visually representing the world around them.
Liz has never lost this love. In fact, the paintings in her Lancaster City gallery are a veritable trip around the world with Liz as tour guide, holding her signature red umbrella aloft for all to see.
This fall, the artist will guide her viewers through the charms of New England, bringing to them scenes of Cape Cod, Newport and Nantucket. Her red umbrella will find its way to the Shaker Villages of New Hampshire, through the Berkshires of Massachusetts and along the islands and rocky coasts of Maine, capturing the true essence of the region. Liz will be exhibiting her New England collection First Friday in October.

Through her art, Liz is an indomitable guide, taking an extensive trip once a year to capture far-flung ports of call that include the British Isles, Switzerland, Italy and France. She has her eye on Greece and the Island of Crete for next year’s journey, eagerly anticipating the delightful contrast of her red umbrellas against the seaside blue and white villages.
Her process of capturing and delivering these far-off lands to her Lancaster patrons involves a small box of watercolors and sketches on site. For her larger paintings, Liz waits until she’s back in the familiar environment of her studio to execute those works.
“My mother said I was born with paintbrushes in my hands, saying I could paint before I could write my name,” explains Liz. Not surprisingly, then, Liz views her ability to paint much as she views her ability to breathe: as basic as life itself.

Gail GraySCIENCE AND ART generally exist in separate spheres, but not so for Gail Gray.
Meeting informally throughout the year with a group of scientists at Franklin and Marshall College, the Lancaster abstract artist has immersed herself in the subject of biological evolution. Highly influential to her work on the canvas, this unlikely pairing of left- and right-brained individuals has also helped expand the realm of art within the scientific community, injecting a significant richness to Lancaster’s local culture as a whole.
Always analytically and scientifically minded, Gail explains that she had always been attracted to early modernists and contemporary painters such as Matisse, Sam Francis and James Brooks at a young age, but was initially unable to articulate why: “Children are identified as artists early on due to their observed drawing ability. But I was always curious why certain professional artists who either did not show evidence of drawing ability or drew in a seemingly naïve style were so widely recognized.”
After the death of Jackson Pollack in 1956, Gail discovered a universality and novel representation of space and time. Entering a new and unfamiliar realm of intellectual awareness, this became Gail’s introduction to philosophy and primary questions of time, space, being, light and color.

FIG COVER ARTIST BETSY OLMSTED is a local Lancaster designer of textiles, wallpaper and other printable surfaces. While the field of textile design has traditionally entailed anonymity, this era’s emerging appreciation for the work of independent designers means that artists like Betsy are finally receiving their due.
First creating her original artwork with mediums such as gouache, watercolor and pen, Betsy then translates the work into a reproduceable design. With a line of household products such as baby blankets, flour sack towels and printed hand towels that feature her art, Betsy also creates custom works for commercial and residential clients.

As to the inspiration for her work, the artist explains with her wry humor: “Pretending to be a tourist in my everyday surroundings makes everything seem fresh and new and inspires ideas for my designs. I love funny suburban rodents, garden creatures, farms and domestic animals, as well as a good mix of weeds and flowers.”
Betsy embraces her work’s marriage of art and function, saying, “I create things that belong in someone’s home. It’s not about making a social statement. I’m enjoying the process and having fun with it.”
Evidenced by the burgeoning demand for independent designs in stores and on-line resources like etsy.com, people are clearly hungry for the kinds of products that Betsy Olmsted creates.
As the artist explains, “Localism is so important. I think it’s really a response to all of the mass production overseas. People want domestic, local inspiration.”

SARAH MCRAE MORTON LIVES between two worlds. Spending half of her year in Lancaster County and the other in Germany, she carries a constant juxtaposition of cultures in her mind, and it is apparent in her work. Often described as a modern American painter rooted in European tradition, Sarah produces paintings rife with unlikely pairings.
In one of her best-known series, “The Horrors and Charms of War,” the artist places animal heads on the bodies of human characters painted in classical European-style. Capturing the traits of her subjects through the creatures that embody them, her animals reveal the inner souls of the human archetypes they represent.
Much like the Grimm’s fairytales of old, there is an unsettling beauty to Sarah’s work. Sarah explains that, in her art, she is drawn to the atrocities of life: the odd, the ironic and the contradictory. She paints in symbols and allegories, much in the way we dream.
“It’s eerie what manifests itself on the canvas. My work reflects what’s going on in my subconscious,” says Sarah. “I’ll look at the painting and realize that whomever I was thinking about has shown up in some form.” A lover of historical paintings, Sarah studies master artists of the ages who have executed the ideas she wants to convey through her own vision.
Her series of self-portraits are an annual emulation of the artist Sarah is studying at the time, each one strikingly different from the next, demonstrating a significant range of talent and artistic understanding.

Jerome
JEROME HERSHEY IS SEARCHING FOR THE SUBLIME. He experienced it once, in a crystallized moment 37 years ago, as he watched a glorious sunrise over Lake Placid with fellow young artists on a morning that changed the course of his life.
With an overwhelming sense that life is good, Jerome determined from that point onward his art should explore the positive.
“From a visual, philosophical and metaphysical standpoint, it was one of the biggest epiphanies I’ve had in my life,” explains the artist.
Since then, Jerome has attempted to infuse his art with light — but in a literary, rather than strictly literal sense. Painting his canvas with words that create fields of light and color, the artist chooses uplifting and profound phrases as the unlikely and fundamental elements of his work.

KIM DEPAUL IS AN EXPLORER OF SECRETS, combining and recombining bits and pieces of memory to make sense of her family’s hidden story.
Yet, through sharing her work with others, the artist has discovered something even more surprising: “People tell me their secrets.”
During a recent exhibition of her work in a gallery in Paris, Kim describes an encounter with a young German artist who responded to her work with sudden tears. She leaned in toward Kim and confided that she too, had secrets. “I never thought of trying to work through painful memories through my artwork,” she said.
Kim has discovered that her deeply personal exploration of the secrets that women keep has a universal appeal because
everyone has a secret.
Kim’s art begins as a collection of elements that she cuts apart, moves around and reassembles, exploring how the actions of one generation affect subsequent generations. In the same way our minds organize memory, Kim’s work incorporates multiple
layers, one over another, constantly shifting.
The artist’s current work with photography and collage is both an extension and a reinvention of her former medium: contemporary quilt making. Much as she previously cut up and put together fabric in various configurations, Kim is now piecing together photographs and the remnants of past lives. She is working with memory. “I am a storyteller,” explains Kim.
Kim tells the stories that families often bury with their dead, treating the keepers of these generational secrets gently: “We have to be easy on ourselves as women who pretend,” says Kim. “We have good intentions. We’re protecting our families. We’re protecting our children.”
All the same, Kim has discovered that releasing secrets through art is both liberating and cathartic. “Now that I’ve seen these connections, I’ll never run out of stories.”

Tom DePaulAS AN ARTIST, TOM DEPAUL IS ACUTELY AWARE of the complexities and contradictions that lie beneath the surface of life.
Describing his art as self-evaluation work, the struggle of peeling back the layers to discover his essential nature is a core theme of Tom’s oeuvre.
“I am trying to figure out who I am.”
Evidenced by how he describes his painting
process, there is a physicality and vulnerability to Tom’s art.
Entering his studio with a keen sense of the task before him, Tom admits, “I am intimidated by the blank canvas. I have to force myself to begin this work — but thirty seconds into it, I’m home.”
As his studio work unfolds, Tom’s initial trepidation is soon replaced with a sense of harmony: “When I paint and draw, I’m really dancing with the canvas.”
Tom’s art seeks to discover the essential humanity lodged within the human form. Excavating with his paintbrush for fundamental truths, Tom explains: “I feel like my work emerges from the canvas as if I’m pulling it through from the other side.”
With the incarnate form as his means for discovery, Tom’s primarily figurative art helps explore and deepen the artist’s understanding of human relationships.
A key relationship which both inspires and is often represented in Tom’s paintings is that with his wife and fellow artist, Kim DePaul: “Kim is my muse. I can’t paint without her.”
Five or six years ago, Kim urged her husband to return to his old love: painting. And though he has been deeply invested in a lifetime of creative work through his successful Lancaster firm, DePaul Planning & Design, Tom notes that the two endeavors are not the same: “My business is creative work, but unlike painting, it has rules.”
And, so, independent of his business, Tom is one of those few souls with the unique satisfaction of continually returning to his study of the inner man, discovering with each brushstroke his own set of rules as they emerge from the canvas.

“WOULDN’T IT BE WONDERFUL to live in the gallery?” These words — a whimsical wish between two artists — became a bricks-and-mortar dream come true earlier this year for Kim and Thomas DePaul as they moved into the freshly repurposed Gallery DePaul at 226 North Arch Street in downtown Lancaster.
As a young man in 1976, when Tom made the bold decision to purchase this property for his growing business, little could he have imagined that, 35 years later, he would reinvent the space as his home. With the offices of DePaul Planning & Design still on the second floor — as well as Kim’s art studio — this well-designed urban space allows the DePauls one of the shortest commutes in town. Kim explains: “In the mornings, I can just run upstairs in my pajamas and get right to work.”
This light-filled home for two gives little indication of its previous incarnations, first as a slaughterhouse, next as
the Moseman’s Peanut Butter factory in the 1880s and, most recently, as the Gallery DePaul.
Embracing his philosophy that “you should live in your own vision rather than someone else’s,” Tom has created an exceptional space. A haven for their work and their art, this unique living situation was a logical next step for the couple.
With one of the two former gallery offices re-imagined into an elegantly simple master bedroom and the other as dedicated dressing room, Tom has seamlessly transformed the space into a sleek urban dwelling with the feel of a Manhattan loft.
The ultra-modern kitchen with three-quarter walls and adjoining butler’s pantry — complete with floor-to-ceiling shelves and rolling library ladder — makes this residence every home chef’s fantasy.
Boasting an incredible turnaround time from dream to reality of a mere five months, Tom explains, “I make things happen — that’s my job.”
