No Smoking Day has been running since 1983, when it was called Quit for the Day. The campaign is re-designed every year to help spur smokers into action. This year’s No Smoking Day took place on Wednesday 9th March.

The No Smoking Day message complements the Pharmacy Stop Smoking Service and encourages those who want to quit to use no smoking day as a great opportunity to stop.

There are many health and other benefits to stopping smoking and smokers can get help whenever they want to stop. No one will try to force smokers to stop - the service is for people who really want to quit . Its not about banning smoking or picking on smokers either.

Just like the pharmacy service, No Smoking Day won’t leave quitters high and dry - smokers need support before they stop, as well as throughout the process.

No Smoking Day teams works with national helplines, local stop smoking services, pharmacists, GPs and other services that offer help for smokers who want to give up.

“Use the whole pharmacy

team to provide the service”.

We asked each of our winning pharmacies for some top tips on their Stop Smoking Service - Here’s what they said ...........

“Make the service person-centred and offer flexibility to the client over the stop smoking course”.

“For continuity, have the same pharmacy staff member provide the

service over the 12 weeks.”

WERE YOU PROUD TO HELP A QUITTER? No Smoking Day No Smoking Day -- 09 March 201609 March 2016

“Provide the ‘How to

stop smoking and stay

stopped’ booklets and

suggest the use of smoke

free apps”.

“Visit the Pharmacy Care Record (PCR) daily to

keep an eye on:

Clients with no contact in the last 7 days

The windows to submit 4 week data (at 4 - 6

weeks) and to submit 12 week data (at 10 - 14

weeks)”.

“Make use of positive patient stories as coping strategies for successful

quits”.

“The first meeting is critical;

take time and listen, give

expectations and the

duration of the service. Make

an appointment for the next

meeting too.”

NRT Voucher Scheme The service specification for this service has just been updated and will be sent to

all community pharmacies for your information. Pharmacies are reminded that all vouchers must be either fully completed or client has withdrawn from the quit attempt

before the voucher reimbursement can be claimed. Vouchers should be sent for payment within 6 months of the last date of dispensing.

Returned vouchers out with this time period will not be reimbursed.

PGD Sign-Up Reminders Varenicline PGD Version 2 of this PGD was issued in July 2015 and many of the Pharmacists that had signed Version 1 are yet to sign up to the current version. Also, there is advice for Pharmacists new to this PGD of what’s required for sign-up via a resource sheet on the Stop Smoking page of the Fife SHOW website. www.communitypharmacy.scot.nhs.uk/nhs_boards/NHS_Fife/stationery/stop_smoking.html.

Paracetamol Post MenB Vaccine PGD Since the preferred model across NHS Fife for the supply of prophylactic paracetamol to babies receiving the MenB

vaccine at two months and four months will be solely via

the community pharmacy service i.e. ALL THREE DOSES WILL BE OBTAINED VIA THE PHARMACY SERVICE; it is

important that all Pharmacists, including Locums are signed up to this PGD. We recently updated the Q and A

support sheet for this service. Insert Web Link

Levonorgestrel EHC PGD The latest version of this PGD was issued in October

2015 and it now requires completion of the two NES e-learning modules; Contraception (September 2015) and

Child Protection (2013).

What’s New? The stationery order form on the Fife page of the SHOW website has been updated - it now includes; “How to Stop

Smoking and Stay Stopped” booklets and “Is your Baby due their MenB Vaccine?” flyers. http://www.communitypharmacy.scot.nhs.uk/nhs_boards/NHS_Fife/stationery_forms.html.

NRT Supply There have been a couple of recent reports of community

pharmacies supplying different formulations of NRT to that indicated on the NRT voucher/prescription, without discussing the matter with

the prescriber first. Where there are supply issues with specific NRT formulations, the prescriber should be contacted to discuss

treatment options before supply.

Thank you to everyone who completed the online survey via Survey

Monkey. Overall, there was a good response with you telling us:

On average, the service is delivered 2 - 5 times per week. 50% feel confident in delivering the service.

Barriers to delivering the service can be IT issues and time constraints.

Most people feel that training is satisfactory. More than half of respondents would like future training to include

topics such as e-cigarettes and Varenicline PGD.

Yellow Card Reporting Fifty years on from its inception, the Yellow Card Scheme is moving into the

digital age through a free access mobile app.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which runs the scheme, collates and reviews reports of suspected adverse drug reactions

on all licensed medicines and vaccines.

Yellow cards are used alongside other scientific safety information to help MHRA

make changes, if necessary, to the warnings given to people taking a medicine or vaccine, or to the way they are used to minimise potential risks.

The new Yellow Card smartphone app supplements an existing one-stop

website and is the only app that allows patients, carers and healthcare professionals to report side effects directly to the Yellow Card Scheme to help

MHRA ensure they are acceptably safe for patients.

The app enables users to:

Create a ‘watch list’ of medications to receive official news and alerts on View numbers of Yellow Cards received by MHRA for medicines of

interest See an immediate response that shows Yellow Card has been accepted

Submit updates to Yellow Cards already submitted View previous Yellow Cards submitted through the app

The app is available free of charge to users of iOS and Android devices at the links below:

A newly styled poster has

been developed to encourage more people to

use the Emergency Hormonal Contraception

service through their local community pharmacy.

The new poster comes in both A3 and A4 sizes and

is available for all community pharmacies.

The poster can be displayed either in the

window or within the pharmacy.

Posters will be distributed to all Fife pharmacies with

downloadable pdfs available via the NHS Fife web pages.

If you require additional copies, please contact [email protected].

NEW! - EHC POSTERS Free Pill-Bobs for Patients Pill-bobs are small, round,

plastic devices designed to facilitate pill removal from blister pack

compliance aids.

They are hand held and the centrally located serrated tip is inserted through the back of the foil and used to

remove the pills from the pack.

After liaison with members of Fife Forum’s elderly panel,

panel members trialled pill-bobs and were impressed with what they found. As a result, Fife Pharmacy

Services will be issuing a small supply of Pill-Bobs to all 85 pharmacies in Fife.

The devices will come in a durable bag with instructions on how to use the Pill-Bob clearly labelled on the front

of the bag. Please give these to your patients who you feel would most benefit.

For more information on the Pill-Bobs, please contact: [email protected].

The new ‘On Your Doorstep’ website was launched at a Community Marketplace event in Rothes Halls, Glenrothes.

The website has been set up by Fife Council’s Self Directed Support (SDS) team to show people what is available in their community when they are looking for support and activities for themselves, friends or for family members.

Fife Pharmacy Services were just one of the many information stands at the marketplace to showcase a what’s on offer.

The website launch was part of a community mapping project to identify as many activities and supports available in Fife’s local communities as possible.

The ‘On Your Doorstep’ website is the first of its kind in Fife and is the most comprehensive online directory of information about local groups, activities, and organisations to date. - www.fifedirect.org.uk/sds/index.cfm?fuseaction=.

Putting the individual at the centre will mean information can be shared more effectively. A much more co-ordinated approach will help avoid people having to navigate their way through what can be a bewildering maze of specialist services.

Fife Council and NHS Fife are joining up in

a new way to improve the way adult

health and social work services are delivered.

Put simply it means that over the coming

years, GPs, hospitals, health workers, social workers, social care staff and others

will work as one team.

NHS Fife has launched a service for patients to use their own medicines while in hospital. Green bags make it much easier for hospital staff to gather a complete list of the medicines a patient is taking and to assess their suitability. Patients are asked to bring all of their medicines into hospital and place them in a green bag. All medicines including those prescribed by a GP or bought from a pharmacy or supermarket including liquids, inhalers, eye drops, creams and herbal remedies should be brought in. The green bag service aims to improve patient safety and satisfaction by: Giving healthcare staff accurate information on all

patient’s medicines. Improving patient safety. Enabling patients to maintain familiarity with their own

medicines. Helping to avoid delays in administration and discharge

as the patients own medicines stay with them throughout.

NEW - Green for Go with Green Bag Service Improving patient safety and satisfaction

Providing a bag for keeping medicines-related information in, for example a repeat prescription.

Reducing waste as all prescriptions are no longer required on discharge.

Improving communication of medicines changes to care providers.

The scheme is widely supported by GPs and local pharmacies across Fife. Green bags are available at pre-admission clinics, on admission to hospital, outpatient departments, out of hours centres and GP surgeries Fife.

.... UPDATE ....

1. Sign into your PCR each day (and have an SOP to ensure a member of staff does this in your absence). It is important to know when a Health check is due and for all pharmacists to be aware of the clinical care issues involved. Be pro-active rather than reactive.

2. Check for health checks scheduled “up to 8

weeks from today” - It is important to check this frequently as you then have to arrange a suit-able time for your patient to attend for the 10min health check consultation.

3. Height, weight and BMI are not compulsory

to record but will be of benefit for future reference to determine if weight loss is significant etc. It IS good practice to record them. You may decide it is acceptable to take the patients word for this but having a set of weighing scales in the consultation room is of benefit and more accurate.

4. Refer the patient to the GP with the first

standard letter - http://www.communitypharmacy.scot.nhs.uk/

documents/nhs_boards/fife/Gluten%20Free%20Food/Community_Pharmacy_Letter_review_GP.doc .

If any health concerns are raised during the health check. [Health concerns may include; Dietary non-compliance, to assess need for supplementation {if e.g patient doesn’t take full unit allocation and general diet is poor}, GI symptoms, unexplained/unintentional weight loss, an underweight BMI etc.

5. Service specifications for payment

requires that a Health Check is offered EACH YEAR to registered patients. Only if THEY

refuse to have one carried out in the community pharmacy should it be recorded as such and the

second standard letter - http://www.communitypharmacy.scot.nhs.uk/

sent to the GP to highlight this. The second standard letter should also be sent even if

there are no issues identified to inform the GP that a health check was carried out. Carry

out the first health check as soon as you can and set the date on the PCR for next year.

6. For easy reference give the Fife pre-

populated ordering form to your patients. -

Pharmacy Sharps Service - Reminder

Here’s what you thought of the event.....

NEW - Training by Video Conference, What do you Think?

Fife Practitioner Champion’s recently held an education evening via video conference at three separate locations - QMH, VHK and SACH. The event was very well attended with participants not only enjoying the format but finding it more convenient to attend a venue closer to home. During the evening entitled “Fast and Furious Fifteen Minutes of Pharmacy”, attendees heard from a variety of speakers from Pharmacy Services, Dietetics, Community Pharmacy and General Practice in fast paced 15min presentations. The night was informal and enjoyed by everyone. A second event is planned for September, and we hope to host two of these events each year. Many thanks for your suggestions on topics. If you have any further ideas or comments, please contact: [email protected].

Would you prefer to attend future educational evenings under this format? (ie video conference from individual locations)

Was good plus getting different feedback from different areas.

Works very well and very informative. Like the format.

Excellent set up. Great range of speakers and presentations.

Good experience despite a few communication hiccups.

Too small on screen to follow.

Went very well and will be very good in the future.

It worked!

Great success! Will remember to bring some water with me next

time. FAB! FAB! FAB!

Very good.

Good not having

to travel far.

Freezing in room, aircon cold even with coat!!

Yes good for me as relief pharmacist since able to

choose a nearby venue.

Location St Andrews excellent. Much prefer this

site.

St Andrews very convenient and closer to home.

Prescribed sharps are required by anyone who uses a needle to inject prescribed medication or who self test, e.g. For blood sugar levels. The pharmacy sharps service enables safe and easy access to the appropriate plastic sharps containers which are given directly to patients by the pharmacy to store used sharps in the patients’ home before returning them for safe disposal. The service has already been successful in: Providing patients with a safe and convenient route for

the disposal of sharps. Reducing the amount of sharps stored in patients’

homes by providing a convenient route for disposal, thus reducing the risk of accidental needlestick injuries.

Definitely will attend again when next event

planned! Enjoyed the range of topics

Better than travelling too far especially after working a full day!

Enjoyable evening. The room was a bit cold!

Reducing the environmental damage caused by inappropriate disposal methods for sharps.

More information , patient leaflets and posters on the pharmacy prescribed sharps service are available from: [email protected]
