BY NOW, it should be clear that FIANZ is undergoing real change. It is a change related to focus, priori>es and a service ethos. As FIANZ enters its fiAh decade, the main focus is to provide services to meet the needs of our growing Muslim society in Aotearoa/NZ. The priorities are education, dawah, social welfare and the wellbeing of our diverse Muslim popula>on. The service ethos is based on the recogni>on that FIANZ has to be robust in its planning, transparent in its workings and, above all, must deliver what it promises. An important hallmark of a religio- service organisa>on is the integrity with which it approaches its mandated responsibilities. With 14 committees composed of experts in their respec>ve areas, the baseline of professionalism has been set. Doctors and social workers sit on the Health and Wellbeing Committee; educationalists are on the Education CommiRee; experienced businesspersons deal with FIANZ business; and so forth. By focussing on the qualifica>ons and competencies needed, the new approach aRracts a wider field of candidates to complement the work of elected FIANZ officers. Furthermore, KPIs are being developed to determine their efficacy. They have all been tasked with one objec>ve – serve the Muslims of NZ within defined quality parameters. Strategically planned frameworks introducing systemic, sustainable change have replaced ad hoc decision-making and personality politics. (Read more about the commiRees on page 4.) The FIANZ office itself is also undergoing transforma>on. It now has two dis>nct func>ons – Secretariat and Corporate. The former is to support the service committees and the laRer is to look aAer the business aspects (halal cer>fica>on, halal training, and proper>es). This division of responsibili>es was overdue and by establishing specialism and exper>se at its core it injects a new dynamic into the organisa>on. The founders of FIANZ had a vision of a professional service organisa>on mee>ng the needs of Muslims and contribu>ng to the wider society of Aotearoa NZ. The Muslims of New Zealand expect nothing less of their leaders.
