South Brunswick is committed to being a Dyslexia Friendly district with the ability to embrace and support the strengths and talents of our students with Dyslexia. 1 in 5 people may have indicators of Dyslexia. On October 15th, you may see educators wearing red shirts to bring attention to the 1 in 5 statistic. Some history: In September of 2014, NJ passed three laws related to Dyslexia. In short, the law requires two hours of mandated training related to Dyslexia for appropriate school personnel; screening for any child who shows indicators of dyslexia or other reading disabilities early - by the end of the rst semester of second grade - with further comprehensive assessment and interventions to follow; and nally, Dyslexia is now identied in the New Jersey Special Education Code of Law under the classication category of Specic Learning Disability. Currently, research shows that approximately 1 in 5 students may struggle in reading and writing. Early intervention can greatly increase success for such students.

ICE CREAMSOCIALIZINGFamilies were able to socializewith staff this year as everyoneenjoyed Ice Cream Novelties.

Those who are dyslexic may experience di�culty with: learning letters and their sounds,decoding words, reading comprehension, written expression, grammar/mechanics, spelling,and rapid word retrieval. Strengths for these students may include: verbal communication, visual arts, computerscience, design, drama, electronics, mathematics, mechanics, music and/or sports.If Dyslexia runs in your family or you have concerns about Dyslexia and your child, reach out toyour child’s teacher or administrator. Our district is very proud of our commitment to being a Dyslexia Friendly district. Our teacherscreated this video to showcase our commitment to supporting students with Dyslexia andother learning difference. LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARDLOOKING BACK During the past few weeks, students have been learning and practicing routines. This includesan orientation to the lunch room and the playground, as well as our safety and evacuation

procedures. Students have also enjoyed getting to know their teachers, classroom routines,and classmates. When I asked a 2nd grader if she was learning and having fun she replied, "Iam having so much fun learning it just feels fun!" LOOKING FORWARD Back-to-School NightsOctober 2, 2018 at 7:00 pm Indian Fields will host a Back-to-School Night for parents ofchildren in grades 1-5. We look forward to seeing and meeting our parents. October 3, 2018 at 7:00 pm Dayton will host a Back-to-School Night for parents of children inKindergarten and Preschool. We look forward to seeing and meeting our parents. Week of RespectBeginning October 1st, we will celebrate our Week of Respect and reinforce our charactereducation program, C.A.R.E.S. with our students. Students will be writing/drawing whatRESPECT feels like, sounds like, and looks like.Parents: Please feel free to send in a 3x3 Sticky Note with your thoughts to add to our BulletinBoard Display. Picture Day October 4thPicture Day is October 4th. Forms have been sent home. Please do not forget to send in formsfor pictures or complete your order online Box TopsBox Tops for Education ends this weekend. On Wednesday, October 10th, we will celebrate the Week of Respect witha Pep Rally. On October 15th, Kindergarten students will enjoy a trip to a farm for "FallFestivities"!
