Region 21 members ventured outside of our re-gion again to kick off this quartet competition sea-son. Three competing quartets in Region 11 had members from Region 21. Also in Region 11, Rising Star Champion C’est La Vie performed as mic tes-ters and Never Too Late performed for evaluation. Scoring 580 points, Cachet earned the Region 11 quartet championship singing “I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling” and “Time After Time.” Bass Mary Ashford

is a member of Harborlites. Cheers!, with tenor Barbara Gregg (Harborlites), earned third place medals and Makin’ Mischief with lead Lee Hays and baritone Liz Sloan (both members of Har-borlites) earned 4th place medals.

A few weeks later, former Region 21 quartet champions SwingLine competed with their new tenor Molly Plummer in her home region, Region 19. In a record-setting quartet contest, SwingLine (with Harborlites baritone Emily “Emo” O’Brien) earned 3rd place medals with an impressive score of 621.

Welcome to Phoenix, and our LUCK BE A LADY Convention, Region 21! What a fabu-lously LUCKY weekend we are all about to have! We will find our new Regional Quartet and Chorus Champions, we will honor our past Regional Champions, and we will cele-brate with our current International Champions. Yes, Region 21 is the home of the current International Champion Chorus Scottsdale Chorus, and the current International Rising Star Champion C’est La Vie!  How LUCKY are we?

And while we are celebrating, please put your hands together for Risa Page, who marks the completion of her service to the Region’s Man-agement Team as your Education Coordina-tor. Thank you for your passionate dedication to the region.  Recently appointed by the Interna-tional Board of Directors to step into the position is Bonnie McKibben. Talk about LUCKY! Bonnie is a 42-year member of our organization, who has held this position in the past. She is a Certified Showmanship Judge, the Director of OC Sound Chorus, and an International Queen of Harmo-ny (Panache 1990).  And if that weren’t enough LUCK, she also brings a corporate background in education and training to region leadership.

From our current International Champions to our new Regional Champions to all of the RMT leaders, past and present – these are ladies who show us every day that LUCK happens when OP-PORTUNITY meets PREPARATION.  Have a fabulous contest everyone!

Membership Coordinator, Adelina Dudda

Team Coordinator, Tracey SandbergEven with the joy of being the current International Champion Cho-

rus, the beat goes on as we learn new music, polish current repertoire, and continue our weekly “workouts” with Director Lori Lyford, and As-sociate Director Jana Gutenson and a recent “refresh” with coach and mentor, Dale Syverson.  We’ve welcomed 9 new members recently in-cluding another infusion of youth members, many of whom are Lori’s Chandler High School choir students. This is indeed a blessing to have this source for adding very well-trained young singers to our mix.

We were amazed at the success of a quartet matching party earlier in the year that resulted in several new quartets. We’re proud to say that there will be 9 quartets representing the Scottsdale Chorus in the up-coming Region 21 quartet competition!

Our 2016 champion Barbie doll, costumed and coifed, recently trav-elled with member Pat Price to take her place with her four Scottsdale Champion Barbie sisters on display at Sweet Adelines International headquarters in Tulsa.  As you can see in the picture, they make a colorful quintet.

Add to the mix a successful golf fundraising event in Feb-ruary, plans to record a CD this summer, planning for

performances at the Region 21 Harmony Showcase and our outgoing performance at the international competition in Las Vegas this fall, and a major show featuring our chorus and Speed of Sound, current Sweet Adeline quartet champions, on October 2, 2016, 3PM at the Chandler Center for the Arts… and the calendar fills up quickly.

–Leila Haggard

Inland Empire Chorus: We’ve Been Arned!Terrific? No, not a strong enough word.  Fabulous? Nope, not it

either.  Awesome is apropos but trite.  PHENOMENAL!  That best describes our “Recharge” coaching weekend with Master 700 Direc-tor Jim Arns! We were fortunate to lure him away from Chicago’s Me-lodeers Chorus (melodeers.org) to Ontario, California, on March 11 - 13. He brought his “uber-skills” with him, and our sound is for-ever impacted.

Our Director, Inter-national Quartet Cham-pion  Tomi McEvoy, said, “Working with Jim was an extraordinary oppor-tunity to learn from a true master of our art form. His concise explanations and precise directing skills brought new depths to our sound and helped us bring our contest set to life.” Cho-rus president Karen Kuisel  added, “Jim has an enormous amount of knowledge and energy that he infuses into the chorus. Application and internalization will get us where we want to go!”

This quarter also witnessed the birth of our new website and a new logo! Thanks to the hard work and dedica-tion of  baritone  Diane Powell, we went live in January  and presented our new face to the world in the New Year. Go check out our new look at inlandempirechorus.org. We also welcomed our three newest members – Irene Loftis, Janine Tominaga, and Glenda Lee – who are all ready to compete with us this year!

We are excited about applying all the wonderful new techniques Jim shared with us and making our performance at Regional an amazing experience for all!

Education Coordinator, Risa Page

Inland Empire Chorus Riverside, CA

“Ready? Set? Go!” read the subject line on the first email of 2016 from Master Director Kathleen Hansen. We responded with a resound-ing, “Yes! Let’s!” The San Diego Chorus started 2016 by taking a look at who we are, who we want to be, and what our values are. The results were exciting, and renewed our commitment to ourselves, each other, our chorus, and this amazing organization. As a result, our rehearsals are fast-paced, focused, and efficient with an emphasis on personal ac-countability. This new drive has allowed us to add great new music to our repertoire and dig deep into our contest music.

Spring brought new opportunities to build relationships within our community. The Choral Consortium of San Diego invited us to kick-off their inaugural Pop-Up Concert Series. We surprised theatre-goers waiting for their show to start with an outdoor mini concert (think bar-bershop flash mob). With friends and family strolling through the crowd to promote us, we raised awareness of Sweet Adelines and vocal music in San Diego.

A visit from Queens of Harmony and former San Diego Chorus members High Society made for a special night of history and har-mony. With Kim Vaughn as our tour guide, we visited the 40-year his-tory of the quartet and were lucky enough to be the test audience for their upcoming Coronet Club performance. Learning about our roots as a chorus through their journey was like genealogy…Sweet Adelines style. We’re so blessed to have such a proud history and exciting future!

Southwest Vocal Project Tempe, AZ

This May, “Luck” will be for the “Ladies” of Southwest Vocal Project. Competition is fast approaching and our chorus is committed to again “wowing” the region with our focused, fabulous sound. We have had quite a few busy months. In January, after several years in our former rehearsal venue, we moved to a much bigger space in Tempe. This new site will help us develop our rich sound.

At the beginning of the year, we performed in Mesa at the Foun-tain of the Sun community fund-raiser dinner: “Honoring Our Korean War Veterans”. In March we were the featured musical entertainment at the Tempe Women’s Club Fashion Show. Both of these performanc-es highlighted our continued commitment to the greater

Spring is here! Our annual Region 21 convention and competition is my favorite Sweet Adeline event each year. This is our time to shine. Oh, I’m certain that your chorus and quartet will be absolutely radiant. But, that’s not what I mean. Throughout the weekend, take a mo-ment to look around the Renaissance Hotel, the Or-pheum Theater, and surrounding restaurants.  Observe the joy shared by newfound and longtime friends. Catch the amazed and partially-confused expressions of “first-timers.” Hear a quartet contest set, muffled by a door as you walk down a quiet hotel hallway. Soak in the chaotic combination of color and bling on Saturday morning as random chorus members wander the halls for hair, make-up, and costume checks. And of course, feel the buzz on Saturday evening while new shiny medals are proudly worn and pick-up quartets share a tag. The coolest thing is that YOU are also part of this amazing phenomenon that occurs when our region comes together each Spring. Re-member this special bond while you sit in the Orpheum this weekend. The singers on stage are part of you...part of us. Cheer them on! Lift them up! Celebrate this fine orga-nization that brings us together in harmony.

When you return to “real life” on Monday, look at all of the women around you who missed out on this expe-rience.  You could help them change their life with one

simple question: “Do you like to sing?” continued on page 7

This Spring brings to a close my 2014-16 tenure as your Education Coordinator. It was a privilege to be appointed and so wonderful to be integral in de-veloping the great variety of learning opportunities our RMT has brought to every member:    Lynne Smith leading MusicFest (November 2014), Tou-ché Quartet Workshop (January 2014), Musical Leader Workshop with Sharon Babb (June 2014), two Summer Seminars (Jim Arns/2014 and “The Stage Coaches”/2015) – including 2015 Rising Star with the incredible joy of seeing C’est La Vie be-come champions – and finishing at MusicFest (No-vember 2015) with President Marcia Pinvidic.

And more is planned for each of us starting this weekend! Don’t miss two opportunities to learn more about the Judging Categories – Friday’s “Us-ing Tags as Tools” and Sunday’s “Judges Café.” Plus, coming in August: Camp Sea Breeze with the viva-cious Queen Karen Breidert.

In 1979, when this first-year teacher entered her high school choral classroom to lead educational activities, little did I know that 30+ years later retir-ing and finding Sweet Adelines would lead me to our amazing region, my beloved Harborlites and San Diego choruses, and the opportunity to be part of the finest Regional Management Team that ex-ists in our International organization.

We have some REALLY BIG NEWS! We are carrying our rich, extensive history of 47 years into a fresh new name and a whole new look! The Mission Viejo chapter of

Sweet Adelines International is now the OC Sound Chorus! We want our name to reflect the energy and excitement we are experiencing with our new Master Director, Bonnie McKibben. We’ve had such fun working with Bonnie – and we all know by “work,” we mean having a really great time! This year, our preparations for contest have included two days of PVIs with Kim Vaughn, of which most of the chorus were

able to take advantage. Kim also coached our chorus in March. Jana Gutenson coached us in April, and we are looking for-ward to seeing all of you in May! We have two quartets competing this year – For The Love of Mic and Midnight Magic – and we wish them all the best! We will be adopt-ing Candid Connection from Ho-nolulu Blend Show Chorus for this year’s competition and can’t wait to cheer them on! We wish all the competing  choruses and quartets the best of perfor-mances, and we can’t wait to see you all in Phoenix!

We invite you to check out our new Facebook page, follow us on Instagram, or go to our website at ocsound.org.

Are we excited about our upcoming competition? Yes we are! One reason is that we will receive preferred seating directly behind the VIP section. We won this special seat-ing at Summer Seminar in a drawing of the top 5 choruses with the highest percentage of membership in attendance at educational events. Since EMSC will be performing early in the competition, we will be able to see almost all of the choruses singing.

Our talented director Denise King is celebrating 25 years of continuous directing of EMSC this year. She joined Sweet Adelines in 1971 and became our director in 1991. She has served two terms as the Directors’ Coordinator on Region 21’s Management Team, and achieved Master Director status  in 2005 at Sweet Adelines International. Denise sang baritone in One Voice, Region 21 Champion Quartet in 2007 and 2010.

In three fun-filled days in February, we had 6 quartets singing for Singing Valentines. During the down time from paid gigs, we also sang at restaurants, retirement homes, and even at fire stations. One of the firemen said that being sung to was “better than doughnuts!”

Also in February we had our annual weekend retreat in Santa Fe, joined by our 2 coaches, Tony Sparks and Eddie Martinez. The weekend included a chorus dinner, rousing games of Tenzi and Pic-tionary, and late night tag singing.

In March we were honored to sing at a Naturalization Ceremony,  welcoming  191 new Americans. What a thrill to see them gaining their citizenship!

There have been several personnel changes since we last competed! New members on the competition

stage for SOTP this year, are: Helen Bar-ko, Paula Glover, Nancy Lawson, Anita Miller, Carol Standley, Anna Strong, and Sandra Zerner. We hope to have Cynthia Baker, Linda Carter, and Bobbi Lyons

with us next year. Long time members Judy Dutko, Mickie Hansel, and Donna Tropp have had to step away from singing barbershop. We wish them all the best in their “retirement.”

Song of the Pines Prescott, AZ

Valley of the Sun com-munity. We have also added several wonderful voices to our membership. We will have five “First Timers” on the competition stage this spring!

On the marketing side, we have been working with members of the Public Relations Lab at ASU to revamp our website, social media, and other marketing areas.

Finally, we are extremely excited about our compe-tition package, which includes a song arranged by our own multi-talented director, Cary Burns. We have had several music retreats to hone our vocal skills, concentrating on the competition package.  Com-peting for the first time in the quartet competition, we are particularly proud of a special quartet, Valley Girls, which includes our own Gretchen O’Malley, Kathy Churchill, Leslie Jones, and Lynn Semrud. We wish all of the competitors good luck and best wishes during the regional competition.

We have a new rehearsal site at First Congregational Church. We love it! It allows us to become more in-volved in our community. Our show, “Harmony and Hot Fudge,” was held there and it was a great success – that started the partnership.

Congratulations to Rosemary Baltensberger and Joyce Deyo on their recent and successful audition with Scottsdale Chorus. Also, thank you to coach Jana Gutenson for helping us prepare for contest. SOTP is also very excited as Patty Cobb Baker will be working with us in July. Lastly, a big thank you to Mickie Hansel, Kathy Stephens, Donna Tropp, and Judi Williams who will be stepping off the Management Team after four

years’ service. Congratulations to Susan Bender, Arlene Brownie, Carol Standley, and Lauren Williamson who’ll be stepping on! It will be a great Management Team.

Best of luck to all competitors at this year’s Region 21 competition. We do have a fa-vorite – SOTP will be cheering loud and long for Rosy Baltensberger, tenor in the Boo-merang quartet.

The new year brought us new guests, some of whom have decided to become

members and will join us for their first performance on stage in Phoe-nix!  In February we celebrated our very own Sharon Orsi who earned the advancement to Certified Director! Congratulations again Sharon – we are so proud of you for accomplishing this distinguished achieve-ment! The chorus has been focused on getting ready for competition since the beginning of the year, and had an entertaining, educational retreat weekend in March with the awesome Gerry Papageorge who even brought along some of her crowns for us to try on for inspiration!

We are more excited than ever to see everyone in May and share our energy onstage with all of you! See you across the footlights!

Hello from Vista Hills Chorus! Since we last communicated, we’ve had a successful end to 2015 and are looking forward to the future!

In November, we were fortunate to have the fabulous Kim Vaughn join us on a Tuesday evening for a marvelous coaching session, and many of our members attended MusicFest and took advantage of the superb educational programs offered. December brought us “Winter Dreams”  – our first “real show” under Sharon Orsi’s direction - where we were

joined by very special guests Ms. Cellaneous quartet and Mr. Paul Orsi “tick-ling the ivories” in Ragtime!  Thanks to all our friends, fami-

Though over a million people call Hawaii home, a significant chunk of our population is made up of the transient members of our nation’s armed forces. At any given time, an estimated 50,000+ military men and women are stationed here – only eight other states have a higher mili-tary presence than Hawaii and they also have significantly more land

mass than we do!One of the perks of this is it gives

us an ever-changing pool of potential members and the past few months have been particularly fruitful!  Kellie Kopec arrived in September 2014 with her husband, Jeff, an aegis fire con-trol man. Kellie is a very active Navy wife and became the Ombudsman for Jeff ’s Command; through the training

sessions, she met Deborah Rushing, who was serving as a member of the Command Support Team for her own husband Ben’s ship. Ben is a Command Master Chief. Kellie came to a Honolulu Blend guest night and soon after, she brought Deborah in as well.

Our resident retired Marine, civilian-working-for-the-Air-Force, and current management team coordinator, Deb, drafted Vanessa in a locker room at COMPACFLT, right across from Pearl Harbor. In true “Pitch Perfect” style, Deb, upon hearing Vanessa singing in the shower, accosted her with an invitation to come and visit our chorus. Vanessa was there that Wednesday! Rest assured that Deb did wait till Vanessa was out of the shower and enveloped in a towel…

The sad part about having our military members is knowing their time with us is limited. Deborah’s husband has already received his or-ders; they will be shipping out this summer. Kellie’s husband Jeff may receive his as early as this December. Though we can’t keep them for-ever, we are making the most of their enthusiasm and joyous singing as we possibly can. And when they leave us, we can content ourselves with their continued friendship and shared harmony, no matter where the winds take them next.

Westwind Harmony Chorus has been very busy these past six months. We are growing in numbers and have acquired seven new members; five leads and two tenors. What an asset they are to our cho-rus! In early December we presented our very first official show. We corroborated with the Desert Aires Barbershop Chorus, and quar-tets from both choruses to share Christmas wishes to the West Valley. We sang a variety of Christ-mas and holiday music both choral and barbershop. To our surprise, we enjoyed a sold-out house at Lord of Life Church in Sun City West. It was a great success. We also tried a new approach to Holiday Grams as we made videos of Holiday and Christmas music and sent e-mail Holiday Grams to our customers.

In January we had an all day coaching session with Brent Graham. He is just amazing! He helped us prepare for the 2016 Region 21 Com-

After eight years in one rehearsal location, Red RockAppella has moved to a new place to sing, and we’ve settled happily into our new Monday evening “home.”

Another great move for the chorus has been the addition of four new mem-bers since the first of this year: Marta Adels-man, tenor; Deb Sanders, lead; Sharon Sizelove, baritone; and Sue Robisch, bass – and that’s a whole quartet of singers! Each has been a delightful addition, musically and amicably, to our chorus family, and we welcome them with open arms.

In preparation for competition, the chorus benefitted from out-standing coaching sessions this year. A couple of them were with the inimitable Sarah Slade from the Scottsdale chapter. Others included the wonderful sister duo of Suzy Lobaugh and Rosemary Baltensberger from Song of the Pines.

We all too soon will bid farewell to our “snowbirds,” Carolyn Ble-cha, Paula Bodah, and Jennifer Harris, as they retreat to their northern homes, but we rest easy in the knowledge that they will return in the fall (and won’t have forgotten the new rehearsal site).

She has taught and challenged us with choreography for our contest package. They will both be back with us in mid-April to put the final touches on our contest music.

We want to thank our fabulous Director Bill Shaw, Assistant Director Claudia Zombek, and Associate Director Marsha Shaw for all your hard work. We want to continue to improve and we are on our way!

Route 66 Sound is very happy to be back in Phoenix! This year’s draw for order of appearance allows us to perform for all of you!  We’re so excited! Preparing for this year’s contest we’ve worked

with our very favorite coach, Jana Gutenson, and BHS Music Judge Tony Sparks. We’re very pleased to welcome new members Pat Finnegan, Carrie Klaurens, and Jo-anna Rubi to our Route 66 Sound risers. Due to other obligations and unable to compete this year are Anne-Marie Lax and Andi Rostel.  However, we’ll see Andi and SparX hostessing and performing on the Club 21 Quartet Jamboree. We’re also excited to see another mem-

ber, Carole Parma, on the Club 21 risers! In February, Southwest Edition participated in Singing Val-

entines along with twenty quartets from Albuquerque choruses. Also, member Anne Marie Lax received a national award for her video, released her new CD, and received three nominations for the New Mexico Music Awards.

Moving forward to the coming year, the chorus will present a workshop on Women’s Barbershop at the Albuquerque Folk Fes-tival in June and then will begin learning wonderful new show repertoire for our October 15th Annual Show. With the new fis-cal year approaching we welcome the new Board with Judy Moore, Sally Hamilton, Diane Taggart, Carole Parma, Judith Hatheway, and Benida Kernodle. We thank Benida for her five years as chorus Treasurer.

Route 66 Sound can only “Imagine the Possibilities” this year, as we share the stage with our Region 21 sisters in harmony!

Harborlites started 2016 with a bang! Our eleventh annual “Diva Day” Young Women in Harmony festival was a success with over 250 high school singers and teachers. They spent the day learning barbershop basics under the direction of the Harborlites leaders and special guest faculty, Jennifer Perry. “Diva Day” culmi-nated in an evening show including SwingLine, Vocal Signature, Ooh La La, Birds on a Wire, and Harborlites. The grand finale united the performers under Pam Pieson’s direction singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

A few weeks later was the record-breaking Harborlites Harmo-

ny Golf Classic at Los Serranos Country Club, with more golfers registered than ever before! The afternoon of golf was followed by dinner, awards, and entertainment from some of our favorite quartets.

Harborlites is so proud of “our” quartets that competed in Region 11 — Ca-chet, regional quartet champions; Cheers!, third place medalists, and Ma-kin’ Mischief, fourth place medalists. We also want to con-gratulate SwingLine, third place medal-ist in Region 19. We couldn’t be happier for your success!

We have been hon-ored to be the 2015 Region 21 champion chorus and are ex-cited to be your hostess chorus in Phoenix. We wish lots of luck and love to “our” quartets competing in Region 21 — Ms. Cellaneous; Never Too Late; Ooh La La; Parfait; and Zealousity.

The date is set for our annual show! Join us for a night of exciting perfor-mances September 24th at Carpenter Theater in Long Beach. Be sure to check our website www.harborliteschorus.org for information.

What a special holiday show we had on December 5 – “Tunes & Tinsel!” The audience loved our unique and memorable costumes, all individually created. And we love all our opportunities to perform throughout the year, including two appearances this winter in Green Valley.

We’ve been working hard on producing our best voices, with a weekly vari-

ety of new warm-ups and training by our talented music team members, and of course, coaching with Jana Gutenson and Judy Pozsgay. And this spring everyone was scheduled for a PVI (personal vocal instruction) to polish our individual voice production.

Some of our members attended the wonderful Club 21-sponsored “Stage Day” (Arizona) and came away quite enthused.

In March, Amphi High School chorus class welcomed one of our quartets for some fun and barbershop training. As a result, four young women plan to compete at the Region 21 summer regional in San Diego, with the help of Cheaper Than Therapy!

We’re really looking forward to Phoenix and we wish the best of luck to ev-eryone competing. We’ll be especially cheering for quartets Cheaper Than Therapy (Carrie Hall, Penny Starr, Gail Trader, and Fran Tuell), and Boo-merang (with our director Karen Meade)!

Originally formed at the end of 2014, Se-dona Singchrony went through some changes at the end of 2015. Jean Dixon joined the lucky crew at baritone; Nancy Martin, previous bari-tone, now sings bass; Sandy Wingate remains as lead and Linda Patterson as tenor.

Change can be daunting. Sedona Singchrony, however, has welcomed this new opportunity as a chance for revitalization. We are developing

What a great year this has been! In January, we had the opportunity to put on our own show in Ruthie’s hometown. We left sunny California and arrived in Iowa where record-breaking temperatures dropped to 20 below; but the audience was warm and wonderful, and everyone had a great time. Soon after, our tenor Neyla (a real life rock star!) found out that she would be touring with her band for almost the whole year! So with all of our crazy schedules to consider, we decided to with-draw from the contest this year but will look forward to next year when things should be a little less hectic for us all. We are very fortu-nate that Amber Carroll has agreed to fill in for Neyla to help us with our outgoing activities over regional weekend. Thank you Amber!

We are so excited for all of the competing quartets and choruses. We hope you have the best time on stage! We thank you all for your love and support.  Representing Region #21 –the best region in the world – has been such an honor!

The Cellaneous Sistahs rang in the new year with sun and singing in Puerto Penasco. While in Mexico, Chris Cellaneous discovered she has been traveling abroad as a man, at least that is what her passport says! Fearful of an international incident she considered coming back across the border in the trunk of Susan Cellaneous’ car. Thankfully the border patrol overlooked the details of her gender upon re-entry to America.

Once back in the States, the Cellaneous Sistahs hosted California Stage Day. A big

Ooh La La rang in the Christmas season again this year at San Clemente’s “Puttin’ on the Glitz.”  We jingled through Christmas with lots of performances, bubbled through New Year’s Eve and then whipped into “Con-test Mode.” We performed on Harborlites’ “Diva Day” show and scored 235 enthusiastic, cheering High School fans – the young girls are so much fun! – and we sang for the Santa Monica Chorus Friends & Family Night to support of Judy and our Region 11 sisters.

We enjoy singing together as much as ever, and we sing as often as we can – we have lots of gigs lined up to keep us busy this spring and summer. We are Contestant #6 in Phoe-nix and we are thrilled to be sharing the stage with such wonderful and talented singers, our sisters in harmony.

At the 2015 Region 21 contest, there were 15 quartets that competed. They were all wonder-ful and exciting to watch. As Club 21 members watched and listened to the contest, we wondered how we could encourage more of our chorus members to get involved with quartet singing?

Club 21 started holding Stage Days several years ago in both in Arizona and California to promote quartet education. We talked with members of choruses in the region to see how can we help the

members form quartets. The answer was informal quartet matching parties. Those took place in November of 2015 and that started the ball rolling.

Two Stage Days were held: January 9th in AZ and January 16th in CA. We put out the agenda and the regis-trations for these days began to pour in! The days were filled with coaching from Club 21 members and classes on the judging catego-ries and presentation

and styling. The quartets performed at the beginning of the day and the end after they had been coached. They were days of learning, questions and answers, performance, and fun!

It is so exciting to see new quartets formed! At this year’s regional contest there will be 21 quartets on stage! We are so proud of each of them. Good luck to you all. Look for more information to come on Stage Days 2017!

–Janice Blake, President, Club 21

SpinOff is a new quartet but none of us are

“new.” We are Erin Cardin, tenor; Lori Lyford, lead; Jana Gutenson, baritone; and Chris Jette, bass. Between us we have been in a total of 22 quartets before forming SpinOff.  Chris had not sung in a quartet since she was the bass of Razzcals in 2004, placing fourth at Interna-tional. Lori and Jana hadn’t quartetted since Affinity retired in 2010, and we thought we were probably done with that part of our bar-bershop lives. In the mean time, Erin, who had been singing in quartets since she was 12, re-cently moved to Scottsdale, and would inter-mittently asked the “retirees” to quartet with her, but to no avail.

After Scottsdale won the Chorus Cham-pionship this past fall, and would not be com-peting in the spring, we started a campaign to encourage chorus members to try singing in quartets and compete at Regional. We de-cided we’d better follow our own advice so Lori, Jana and Chris came out of self-imposed retirement and asked Erin if she would sing with us, to which she replied, “Finally!” We like to say she chased us until we caught her! This happened at the end of December and we’re all so glad we took this step to form a chapter quartet. Who knew it would be this much fun!

a new and varied repertoire as well as seeking and receiving very useful coaching.

We are also developing symptoms of “Matching Outfit Syndrome”. However, this should not prove detrimental to our quest for improved vocal skills. It is a common condi-tion shared by many quartets.

Sedona Singchrony is excited at the pros-pect of all the work and progress ahead. For now we look forward to hearing the great quartet performances in our 2016 regional competition. We aim to compete in 2017.

There are not enough words to thank our incredibly talented coaches: Kim Vaughn, Lynne Smith, and Laura Pallas. You all continue to amaze us with your talents and we are so grateful that you so generously share your knowledge of the barbershop craft with so many of us!

Good luck to all the choruses and quartets who will walk across the stage to represent our fabulous region this weekend!

Bonnie McKibben, Judy Ashmore, Mary Ash-ford, Carol Krenek, Norita Skvarla, and Jac-queline Goguen. We certainly have “Friends in Low/High Places!”

Next stop, we were honored to share a song or two at the Harborlites Golf Tournament. Those ladies really know how to throw a party! Hell Yeah!

On April 2nd, the Cellaneous Sistahs took on the LA Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival. We weren’t quite sure what to expect since we followed all of the “young” groups, but in true Cellaneous fashion we showed the audience “Singing is Ageless!” We will be rep-resenting LA at the Harmony Sweepstakes Fi-nals in San Rafael, May 14th. So on that note…We will see you at the Quartet Jamboree on the 12th, we will see you at the quartet con-test on the 13th, and we will be flying to “San Fran” on Saturday morning the 14th. Hugs to all of the competitors and Region 21 members. We’ll see you at “Summer Camp.”

As your 2015 Rising Star Champions, we feel it is our duty to represent and support Youth in Harmony. It has been and will continue to be our pleasure to be ambassadors of youth for barber-shop because we know how important the youth are to the future of these organizations. That is why we have dedicated ourselves to getting to New Zealand for this year’s Rising Star Contest so we can support the competitors.

Since August of 2015, we have been fundraising to get to New Zealand. We have sold items such as calendars and buttons, put together raffle baskets, hosted a number of “Bite Nights” at various restaurants, and put on our annual pancake breakfast. After many months of fund-raising and a lot of support from our friends, family, and Region 21, we are proud to say that we have reached our goal and will be going to New Zealand in July. We understand how hard it is for quartets to raise all of this money, especially when most are students. Since we have reached our goal, we decided to give the travelling quartets a little something to show our support. We sent our love to Harmonyholics, who have already reached their goal, as well as gave $200 to The Ladies (U.S.) and Timbre (Sweden). We hope that our small gesture will get them a little closer to New Zealand. We want to make a difference in this organization and supporting the youth is

our first step. —Caitlyn, Melanie, Krista, and Taylor

ADP ANNUAL RETREAT SCHEDULED for June 10-12, 2016, in Tucson. If you’ve ever thought you might like to learn more about the arrangements that our choruses and quartets sing, the retreat would be the perfect place to take a closer look at the process.  Rooms will become available for the group at a dis-counted rate at the Tucson Hilton East on Thursday evening June 9th. Friday morning will be an opportu-nity for one-on-one mentoring with a certified arranger, either about arrangements on which you are working, or on using your music software program.

The agenda for the retreat is being developed and will in-clude discussions on SAI Head-quarters’ new contract with Hal Leonard which has changed the way arrangements are sold and distributed, a class on composition (the advantage of composing our own songs does away with all the clearance issues we can often encounter when attempting to arrange a song another person has composed), chord substitutions, music notation and making progress on a group ar-rangement of a public domain ballad we chose last year and which was started at last summer’s daylong workshop at Camp Ringing Pines. This summer’s workshop will be held during Camp Sea Breeze in San Diego on Friday, August 19th.  Faculty for Camp Sea Breeze is going to be Karen Breidert – not to be missed!
