OPENING CAROL

Once in Royal David’s City IRBY

Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed,

where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed;

Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ, her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all,

and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall.

With the poor, and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy.

Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by,

we shall see him, but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high;

when like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around.

WORDS: Cecil Frances Alexander, 1848

MUSIC: Henry Gauntlett, 1849

BIDDING PRAYER Rev. Jim Humphries

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we

Forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN.

The Sussex Mummers’ Christmas Carol arr. Larry Clark

The Instrumental Ensemble

First Lesson GENESIS 3:8-15, 17-19

Cindy Farmer

God tells sinful Adam that he has lost the life of Paradise and that his seed will bruise the serpent’s head.

They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the

man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But

the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in

the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you

were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The

woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the LORD God

said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I

ate.’ The LORD God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals

and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your

life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike

your head, and you will strike his heel.’ And to the man he said, ‘Because you have listened to the voice of

your wife, and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, “You shall not eat of it,” cursed is

the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall

bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread

until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return.’

Thanks be to God.

E’en So, Lord Quickly Come Paul Manz

The Chancel Choir

Peace be to you and grace from him who freed us from our sins,

who loved us all and shed his blood that we might saved be.

Sing holy, holy to our Lord, the Lord, Almighty God,

who was and is and is to come; Sing holy, holy, Lord!

Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein, rejoice on earth, ye saints below,

for Christ is coming, is coming soon, for Christ is coming soon!

E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, and night shall be no more;

They need no light nor lamp nor sun, for Christ will be their All!

Second Lesson GENESIS 22:15-18

Rev. Dianne Lawhorn

God promises to faithful Abraham that in his seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.

The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, ‘By myself I have

sworn, says the LORD: Because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I

will indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the

sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies, and by your

offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for themselves, because you have obeyed my

voice.’ Thanks be to God.

Third Lesson ISAIAH 9:2, 6-7

Shelby Liebler

The prophet foretells the coming of the Savior.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep

darkness, on them light has shined. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests

upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of

Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David

and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time

onwards and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. Thanks be to God.

In the Bleak Mid-Winter Gustav Holst, arr. Susan E. Geschke

The Chancel Bells

Fourth Lesson ISAIAH 11:1-4, 6-9

Gabby Gazaille

The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown.

A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the

LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the

spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not

judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the

poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard

shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead

them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw

like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand

on the adder’s den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of

the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. Thanks be to God.

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming ES IST EIN ROS

The Youth Choirs and Schola Cantorum

Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!

Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as those of old have sung.

It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,

when half spent was the night.

Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;

with Mary we behold it, the Virgin Mother kind.

To show God’s love aright, she bore to us a Savior,

when half spent was the night.

O Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,

dispel in glorious splendor the darkness everywhere.

True man yet very God, from sin and death now save us,

and share our every load.

Fifth Lesson LUKE 1:26-35

Lucy Franzen

The angel Gabriel salutes the Virgin Mary.

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name

was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, “Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is

with thee: blessed art thou among women.” And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying,

and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, “Fear

not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and

bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the

Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign

over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” Then said Mary unto

the angel, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” And the angel answered and said unto

her, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:

therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”

Thanks be to God.

Ave Maria Franz Biebl

The Youth Choirs and Schola Cantorum

Trio: Robin Burt, Virginia Herrick, and Kevin Turner

The angel of God visited Maria and she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus.

Maria said: See the servant of the Lord. May it happen to me according to your word.

Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us.

Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, Holy Mary,

pray for us now and in the hour of our death. Amen. Amen. Amen.

Sixth Lesson LUKE 2:1, 3-7

Isaac Turner

St. Luke tells of the birth of Jesus.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered.

All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to

Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of

David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.

While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn

son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them

in the inn. Thanks be to God.

Seventh Lesson LUKE 2:8-16

Rev. Brad Hinton

The shepherds go to the manger.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by

night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about

them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good

tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a

Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped

in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the

heavenly host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will

toward men.” And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds

said one to another, “Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass,

which the Lord hath made known unto us.” And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph,

and the babe lying in a manger. Thanks be to God.

CAROL

While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night WINCHESTER OLD

While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground,

the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around.

"Fear not!" said he, (for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind);

"Glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind.”

Thus spake the seraph and forthwith appeared a shining throng

of angels praising God on high, who thus addressed their joyful song:

"All glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace;

good will henceforth from heaven to men begin and never cease!"

WORDS: Nahum Tate, 1700

Eighth Lesson MATTHEW 2:1-11

Ali Owensby

The wise men are led by the star to Jesus.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came

wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have

seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king had heard these things,

he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes

of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him,

“In Bethlehem of Judah: for thus it is written by the prophet, and thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

art not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my

people Israel.” Then Herod, when he had privately called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what

time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the

young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him

also.” When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went

before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they

rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child

with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures,

they presented unto him gifts: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. Thanks be to God.

Ninth Lesson JOHN 1:1-14

Rev. Shane Page - Senior Pastor, Davidson United Methodist Church

St. John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same

was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing

made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shone in

darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was

John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might

believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light,

which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was

made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that

believe in his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of

man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the

glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

CLOSING CAROL

BENEDICTION AND RESPONSE

Welcome to our Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols!

This service has its roots in late19th century England. It has been made famous by the choir

of King's College, Cambridge, who has sung this service every Christmas Eve since 1918.

The music changes every year, but the readings remain the same. The readings tell us the story

of God's plan for salvation for us beginning with Adam and Eve and continuing until the

coming of Christ. It is our hope that you will find the joy of Christmas within your hearts as

we lead the familiar carols of the season as well as our anthems.

We are grateful that so many other ensembles are joining the youth choirs this year in

this Festival of Lessons and Carols. We are very fortunate at Davidson UMC to have so

many talented musicians who offer their time and talents.

Carols were recorded virtually by the Carolina Brass Quintet and members of Schola Cantorum.
