E R I C N E L S O N , D I R E C T O REric Nelson is professor of music and director of choral studies at Emory. He is also the conductor and artistic director of Atlanta Master Chorale. Nelson’s choirs have performed throughout the world, including London, Rome, Krakow, Berlin, Leipzig, Prague, Moscow, Seoul, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Sydney Opera House. He has conducted choirs at eight American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conventions, including Atlanta Master Chorale’s performance at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis for the National Convention in 2017, and the Emory Concert Choir’s performance at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall for the National Convention in 2011. In summer 2016, to the astonishment of all who know him, he appeared with Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones at Bobby Dodd Stadium, leading the Concert Choir in the classic You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Most recently, in May 2017, he embarked with the Emory Concert Choir on a performance tour to Spain and Portugal where they sang in Granada, Seville, and Lisbon, and at the Alhambra.

Nelson’s ensembles are characterized by the performance of repertoire in a wide variety of styles and for their ability to fuse technical precision with warmth of musical expression. He appears regularly as clinician, lecturer, and guest conductor for honor choirs, conventions, symposiums, workshops, and all-state choral festivals. Nelson is also past president of the Georgia ACDA.

Nelson’s choral compositions and arrangements are sung regularly by ensembles throughout the United States. He is the editor of the Atlanta Master Chorale Choral Series, a division of Morningstar Music Publishers and ECSchirmer. His compositions are also published by Colla Voce and Augsburg Fortress. He has degrees in voice and conducting from Houghton College, Westminster Choir College, and Indiana University.

J O N AT H A N E A S T E R , O R G A N A N D P I A N OJonathan Easter is a recent graduate of Emory, where he studied with Timothy Albrecht and Eric Nelson and earned a double master’s degree. Easter now serves as director of fine arts and organist at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in midtown Atlanta where he oversees a program of adults, children, handbells, brass, and drama. In addition to his responsibilities at St. Mark’s, Easter also works throughout the Emory music community accompanying the Emory University Chorus and Concert Choir and serves as the accompanist for the Atlanta Master Chorale under the direction of Eric Nelson. Recent highlights include coconducting the featured ensemble for the Atlanta Rolling Stones concert; accompanying Jamie Barton, mezzo soprano, for recitals at All Saints’ Episcopal Church; serving as worship service organist for the Southeastern Regional Convention of the American Choral Directors Association; and serving as an accompanist and copresenter at the American Guild of Organists convention in Charlotte.

Prior to moving back to Atlanta, Easter served as music director for St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Easter also served as collaborative artist for the choral ensembles at the University of North Florida conducted by Cara Tasher. While in Jacksonville, Easter was an active recitalist, performing at the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, Memorial Presbyterian Church, and Jacobi Symphony Hall, and performing with Jamie Barton, mezzo-soprano. He was also an active administrator in the music community, serving on the board of the Beaches Fine Arts Series and as sub-dean for the Jacksonville Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Easter has an undergraduate degree from Shorter College where he studied with Peter Dewitt and Helen Ramsaur, and he sang with the Shorter Chorale under the direction of Martha Shaw. Easter lives in Atlanta where he spends his free time reading and playing with his two dogs.

E M O RY U N I V E R S I T Y C H O R U SOpen to all Emory students as well as to members of the Emory community, the University Chorus holds a unique place in Emory life. Music majors and nonmajors, undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, parents and their children, workers and retirees, alumni and neighbors, all come together to rehearse each Monday night, united by their common love of singing. The chorus regularly collaborates with the Department of Music’s instrumental ensembles, including the Emory Wind Ensemble and the Emory University Symphony Orchestra. Recently performed works include Orff’s Carmina Burana; Brahms’s German Requiem; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9; the Haydn oratorio, The Creation; and parts II and III of Handel’s Messiah in the version by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

E M O RY C O N C E RT C H O I RThe Concert Choir is Emory’s select chamber choir. The singers in the choir come from across the country and around the world. All are students at the university with a wide variety of academic majors, brought together by their love of choral singing.

The choir has sung at both the Southern and National Conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, an honor reserved for the nation’s finest choral ensembles. It has performed at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, the Berlinerdom in Berlin, the Vatican in Rome, St. Nicholas Church in Prague, the Alhambra in Seville, and at Bobby Dodd Stadium with the Rolling Stones. Most recently, in May 2017, the choir travelled to Europe for a performance tour in Spain (Granada, Seville) and Portugal (Faro, Lisbon).

The choir sings a wide variety of sacred and secular repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present, from chant to folk song. In addition to their own performances, the choir joins each spring with choirs from the University of Georgia and Georgia State to present the Three Choirs Festival. It also joins with the Emory University Chorus in the fall for the Lessons and Carols performances and with the Emory University Symphony Orchestra for performances of major works in the spring. This spring’s concert will feature works by American composers Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, including the Bernstein Chichester Psalms.

C H R I S T M A S M U S I C P R O G R A M H I S T O RYBased on the traditional service at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, England, the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was drawn from sources ancient and modern by E. W. Benson, Bishop of Truro in 1880, and has been observed at Emory University since 1935.

Performance of Christmas music by an Emory University Chorus has been a tradition since 1925, when it began under the guidance of legendary choral music director Malcolm H. Dewey. For six years the Glee Club presented its Christmas program at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Atlanta. After the completion of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, the Glee Club moved the program to the Emory campus in 1931 and adopted the Nine Lessons and Carols format for the service in 1935. Dewey remained as director until 1957.

In 1953 Emory College became coeducational, and this brought the first performance of the Women’s Chorale in 1955. The chorale joined in the Christmas service in 1960. William L. Lemonds became director of choral music in 1963 and introduced the singing of Once in Royal David’s City as the processional hymn. This has become one of many cherished traditions associated with the Christmas concert. The drawing depicts Joseph and Mary arriving late in Bethlehem with all the inns fully occupied. They are tired and weary, anxious and fearful. Above them is the Natal Star, which casts its protective light over them. The Light of the World is the Christ Child that Mary is still carrying in her womb.

The original artwork is 8.5 x 11 inches and was created using crayons and paper sculpting.

John Stuart is originally from Scotland. He serves as the pastor of Erin Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, Tennessee. Stuart produces new art pieces each week using his own unique method of drawing with wax crayons.
