PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As the president of the Fergus Lions Club, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our 36th Anniversary Home & Leisure Show. The show was started to be able to carry out the work that the Lions do in our local community, province and worldwide, by using these funds to help people less fortunate than ourselves. After all, our motto is “WE SERVE”.

Some of the projects that the Fergus Lions run or support are: sight screening for children and our Walk for Dog Guides that supports the six types of service dogs supplied to Canadians who need them, free of charge.

At Christmas, along with other service clubs in town, we run the Santa Claus Parade. Then we hold Photos with Santa, and the money collected is donated to the Centre Wellington Food Bank. We also hold a toy drive with Reliable Ford and all the toys go to the food bank’s Christmas Hamper program. We run TV Bingo every Wednesday throughout the fall and winter and use that money toward equipment and other needs for Groves Memorial Community Hospital.

In the fall and spring, we organize a roadside cleanup of our section of the highway south from Canadian Tire. We ask the school children from one of our elementary schools to help, in return for a donation to their projects. We sponsor an effective speaking contest for local high school students, along with the Lions Youth Exchange program.

After Helen Keller challenged our organization to become her Knights of the Blind, Lions now work to totally eliminate preventable blindness. We also collect used eyeglasses and get them to people who need them. Lions have also of late taken up the challenge to wipe out measles.

We also make donations to Lake Joseph Camp (CNIB); Camp Dorset for those on dialysis; and Camp Huronda, a camp for children with diabetes.

The Fergus Lions Club contributes to our community in many ways, with the Grand River Arboretum and Wilkie Park, and we recently made a donation toward the Power of Play proposal for Stait Park on Garafraxa Street West. We also contributed to the improvements to the sportsplex, as well as to local sports teams and other youth organizations.

Our club is always looking for new members to join the largest service organization in the world, with 1,350,000 members in 208 countries worldwide. If you are interested in becoming a Lion and helping out in your community, speak to any of the Lions at the show or call me at 519-843-7204 and start your journey on a path of service with the Lions of the world. For more info about Lions and our Club go to www.lionsclub.org or ww.ferguslionsclub.org.

I look forward to meeting and talking to you at the show. Don’t forget our Fish Fry on Friday night; it’s always a hit, for good food and friends.

I would like to thank you for your ongoing support of our Home & Leisure Show!

by Mike Robinson of The Wellington AdvertiserFERGUS - Local residents Rienk and Roberta

Vlietstra are the newest Citizens of the Year, as chosen by the Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

The couple was surprised at their home by a sizeable group of well wishers on April 9.

Apparently those involved were able to keep the secret, as both Rienk and Roberta ex-pressed surprise at the decision.

Letters of support for their nomination were received from the Fergus and District Horticul-tural Society, the Fergus Lions Club, Canadian Blood Services, Fergus Grand Theatre volunteer coordinator Margaret Molitor, and Deb Dalziel.

Hugs were the order of the day as Centre Wellington Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj was at the front of the line to congratulate the couple.

The Vlietstras received a number of presen-tations on Tuesday, including congratulatory letters and tickets to this year’s awards of excel-lence.

Roberta commented she and her husband were pleased simply to be nominated. She quipped that everyone in the room was likely surprised at her being at a loss for words.

Laughing, Rienk joked, “It is not too often she does not have something to say.”

Still in a state of disbelief, Roberta added, “Surely there must be someone else.”

Mayor Ross-Zuj said “everyone here believes you two are deserving of this.”

Kathy Bouma of the Fergus Horticultural So-ciety said “The Fergus and District Horticultural Society is able to continue only with the sup-port of its members led by strong leaders. Rienk and Roberta Vlietstra have been with the Soci-ety for over twenty years and have been active not only as members but also on the Board of Directors and Executive. They have both served terms as President and been on many commit-tees. Roberta has also served a five year term as Secretary/Treasurer on the Ontario Horticul-tural Society District 7 Board.”

The couple has also been active in our gar-dening group which is responsible for many of the beautiful gardens and park areas that are viewed and enjoyed by our residents as well as tourists.

“Rienk was involved in turning Terry Fox Park from green grass to the many perennial beds of heritage peonies, daylilies, irises and hostas along with the climbing roses on the millennium built beautiful arbour.”

Bouma added “Likewise, Roberta has spent many hours in the beautification of Fergus. She worked on the Communities in Bloom commit-tee which saw the Town of Fergus win on the Provincial level in 1998, followed by a National win in 1999. Upon amalgamation, Centre Wel-lington went to the National level in 2002 and lost only by two points.”

The Vlietstras also share their Garafraxa Street garden with many residents and garden-ing enthusiasts by including it in our own Fer-gus Garden Tour and opening it for visitors and bus groups.

“Rienk and Roberta are able to accomplish many things because of the great communi-cation they encourage between the different groups.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by Eric Pe-terson, president of the Fergus Lions Club.

“On behalf of the Fergus Lions Club, it gives me great pleasure to support the nomination of Rienk and Roberta Vlietstra as Citizens of the Year.”

Rienk joined the club in May 2001.One of his roles in the public spotlight

include his long standing dedication to our Grand River Arboretum (for which our club re-ceived a Grand River Watershed Award in Sep-tember 2011 from the Grand River Conserva-tion Authority).

His knowledgeable and energetic assistance with another of our outdoor projects, Wilkie Park on St. George Street East; and serving as the club’s representative on Project B.O.O.T. (Benches on our Trailways) our joint program with other local Lions clubs and the GRCA, launched at our 2009 Home & Leisure Show.

Rienk is also involved in many activities such as the annual Diabetes Tag Day in November and the Santa Claus parade in December; help-ing with parking at the Fergus Truck Show or with security at the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games during the summer; or assist-ing our club and the public in many ways at our own Home and Leisure Show each May.

“Lion Rienk has earned well-deserved rec-ognition from our club for his dedication to our motto of “We Serve.”

The couple have also volunteered at the Fer-gus Grand Theatre for approximately 15 years.

Margaret Molitor, Theatre Volunteer Coordi-nator said “We at the Fergus Grand Theatre are indeed fortunate to have volunteers of their caliber.”

disabilities• Seizure response dogs for those with epilepsy• Autism assistance dogs for autistic children

In conjunction with Purina, the Lions Club is hosting the annual Walk for Dog Guides on May 26th 2013 at Forfar Dog Park in Fergus. ( registration starts at noon ). Bring your dog or dogs and “staff “ for an afternoon of fun, “people food”, demonstrations and a little exercise.

Since its debut in 1985 the Purina Walk for Dog Guides has raised over $9 million , the largest fundraiser of its kind in Canada. The walk is held in over 250 communities across Canada allowing our Lions Foundation of Canada to carry out its mission to provide Dog Guides at no cost to Canadians with disabilities.

So pick up a pledge sheet at a local pet food store, dog groomer, vet. clinic or call: Lion Ben at 519-843-3185 or Lion Rob at 519-820-1140 for pledge sheets or more information. Lets get walking Centre Wellington, these puppies need us.

FERGUS - By participating in the Purina Walk for Dog Guides on Sunday May 26 at the Forfar ball park, people can help provide dog guides to people who need them in the community. Registration will open at noon and the walk will begin at 1pm. For more information, to register for the Walk, or to donate, visit: www.purinawalkfordogguides.com.

The event is sponsored by the Fergus and Marsville Lions Clubs and runs from 12:00pm - 5:00pm. Each dog guide costs approximately $20,000 to raise and train. Lions Foundation of Canada does not receive any government funding and relies on the support of fundraising events and donations from service clubs, corporations, foundations and individuals across the country to continue its successful program.

The foundation trains five different types of dog guides:- canine vision dog guides, for people who are blind or visually impaired;- hearing ear dog guides, for people who are deaf or hard of hearing;- special skills dog guides, for people with a medical or physical disability;- seizure response dog guides, for people with epilepsy; and- autism assistance dog guides, for children with autism The Purina Walk for Dog Guides national event is held in over 200 communities across Canada.

Thank you for your business.Celebrating 30 Years!

Take a moment to consider the following questions:

Are you concerned in the well being of your community?

Are you interested in having the opportunity to network with key people within the community?

Would you like to meet people, have fun, and be of help to those less fortunate?

If you can answer “yes” to any one of these questions, then the Fergus Lions Club is the organization for you. On behalf of our Club, I invite you to contact any member of our Club, or visit our web site at www.ferguslionsclub.org for a brief overview of our activities and our accomplishments. Picture a person standing

in a field holding a shovel. Neither the person nor the shovel are of any great value, until they get together and DO something. That’s how it is with Lions. It’s an opportunity for the organization and people to come together and DO something. Something worthwhile, something rewarding, something for the betterment of our community. Look for our members at the Lions Home and Leisure Show, say “Hello” to them, feel free to ask for information about our Lions Organization..
