FEIN in motion:Calder Sheetmetal Limited

Calder Sheetmetal Limited is a company based in West Yorkshire which specialises in sheet metal fabrication. The team at Calder Sheetmetal require the use of angle grinders on a daily basis in order to carry out applications such as deburring, sanding and cutting. The company was having serious issues with the longevity of its grinders which were constantly breaking down. Whilst these tools – manufactured by a FEIN competitor – were relatively cost- effective to purchase initially, the fact that Calder

Sheetmetal had to continually replace and send them away for repair was leading to mounting costs for the company.

On top of the costs of replacing the grinders on a regular basis, the lack of robustness of the current tools was also leading to significant downtime for Calder Sheetmetal. Each time an existing grinder would burn out, the company had to contact the distributor, who would then have to contact the manufacturer to arrange collection. The machine would then either be sent away for repair or the company would be required to purchase a new one and wait for its arrival.

In an attempt to resolve these issues, Calder Sheetmetal decided to seek a more reliable product and contacted metal working power tools specialist, FEIN. Calder Sheetmetal needed to know that the product would stand up to industrial deburring and cutting. On top of this, the company also required a high level of service and an assurance that any issues would be quickly resolved. After discussing the requirements, Neil Meeson, consultant at FEIN, recommended the WSG 8-115 compact angle grinder. Due to its solid metal gearbox head and reliable motor, this

particular product provides maximum service life, making it ideal to satisfy the needs of the customer.

Neil provided Calder Sheetmetal with a demo of the angle grinder, allowing the company to see first hand the overall quality of the tool. During his visit, he was also able to demonstrate some of the grinder’s additional benefits, including the fact that the tools carbon brushes last up to 30% longer and that it has a better vibration performance than comparable angle grinders. Speaking of the high level of service provided, Simon from Calder Sheetmetal, said:

First and foremost we’re really happy with the robustness and overall quality of the product. We were going through grinders at such a pace

resulting in significant downtime and extra costs for the business.

Significant cost savings and improved efficiency

In stark contrast to the weak performance of the grinders that Calder Sheetmetal had previously used, which were failing – sometimes within weeks of purchase, FEIN provided the company with an initial eight angle grinders which are still in great working condition eighteen months later. Neil and the team have continued to react extremely quickly to any issues, and the company has experienced significant total cost savings and improved efficiency as a result of no longer having to repair and replace its grinders on a regular basis.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN THE INDUSTRY? Six years. WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT FEIN PRODUCTS? The best thing is the quality and functionality of the products; well designed, durable products that stand the test of time even under the toughest of applications.

FAVOURITE FEIN PRODUCT? I have two actually; the first is undoubtedly the AKBU Cordless Magnetic Core drill, it’s such a well-designed product, from the powerful permanent magnet, to the Quickin Weldon chuck. It’s a cordless machine but you would never know, as the cutting performance feels like you’re using a corded machine. In my opinion this machine is “Best in Class” in terms of the other cordless mag drills on the market.

The other product I love is the WSG8-115 angle grinder, this little beauty of a machine never lets me down. I have placed this machine into light and heavy fabrication shops alike and it never fails to impress me with its performance and reliability. In fact I think if there was a nuclear blast this machine would probably survive it! THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOU: I would say knowledgeable, reliable and super friendly (I know that’s four words). I started my working life as a mechanical engineer, which I

did for twelve years. My engineering career gave me the technical knowledge of products and applications, which in turn enables me to assist my customers and help them choose the right product for the application. Whether it’s a technical question or a problem that needs fixing with a machine, my engineering background allows me to give an extra level of service to my customers; I can always offer the most relevant advice and I can usually get a machine up and running again myself to minimise downtime which is something customers really value. On top of having the knowledge and expertise, I really do care about helping my customers get the best results, and I would like to think that in the last six years I have built some strong working relationships with my customers. If you look after your customers they will in turn look after you, that’s what I believe anyway.

PROUDEST MOMENT FROM WORKING AT FEIN? That’s a difficult question as I have had many proud moments whilst working for FEIN; I have many great customers, both end user customers and distributors, and when they tell me I’ve done a good job, whether its demo that went well, or a product that I’ve recommended that worked fantastically. That’s when I know I’ve done a good job and the hard work has paid off. I’m proud of that fact that I work for the company that invented the very first electric power drill, what more can I say!

When securing metal structures to an existing building’s concrete/masonry, where holes of between 4 and 20mm are required, choosing the correct power tool is key. Wide flutes reliably convey the chippings upwards. Minimum contact between the cutter and drill hole surface for low torque and power consumption.

Shocks and impacts are absorbed by tough cutting edges and a robust cutter body. Cutting hardness of 64 HRC. Internal vacuum heat treatment for optimal performance and service life.

Low torque and power consumptionrequirement due to narrow cutting width (maximum 5.1mm).

The highest cutting point is the inside edge of the cutting tooth. The cuttingtooth cuts from inside to outside, thereby removing the burr from the core so that the cutter can cut into the next plate in the plate stack. All cutting teeth have the same geometry. After the material has been broken through, all cores are ejected from the cutter.
