Increasing materialism increases the depression in a society. In a world where appearance it

is almost everything, this causes one of the diseases that affects people. Depression appears

because of the lack of money or the desire to earn more. Also, because of the need to obtain,

or maintain a certain level of life. What strikes is the fact that everyone seems willing to pay

    the price.

Everyone is equal in rights and obligations. Still, when talking about the economic and social

status, no one is in the same position anymore. This fact can be observed starting with

children. For instance, few schools oblige their pupils to wear uniforms. Children can wear

whatever clothes they want and their parents can afford. Separate groups are created, based

on the appearance, and this affects the children who are put aside because they cannot be at

the same standard as their colleagues. Clothes, trips and latest gadgets are the ones that make

the difference in teenagers lives. They need this item in order to feel as a part of a group,

otherwise they will feel humiliated and the depression will install. As www.suicide.org states,

one of the main reasons that determinate teenagers to commit suicide is the depression causedby humiliations and the lack of self-confidence. Adult people tend to define themselves too

relating to their jobs, cars or even travels. There is a constant fight over who is in a higher

position at work, over the salary or the houses they are living in. If a friend or even family

member buys a new item, the others will do the same, just to keep up the flag.

One of the problem in today`s society is another fight: between the true supply and the

demand of products. Ads on the streets, in the television, radio and through social media.

There is nothing in this world you would dream of and not exist. What should concern

everyone is the fact that there are a large variety of products that we used in the same

purpose. For example, today everyone owns a smartphone, a laptop and a tablet. Every item

is used for communication or to navigate the Internet. Still, it is impossible to have only one

of these products if the rule is to have it all. The inconvenience appears where money is

    missing.

People do not judge others because of what they say or their ideas. Now, everyone is judged

only on their appearance and possessions. If one has money, then it is a good person, it is

reliable and by default is also clever. Coming of a poorer background creates problems,

people fight more in order to achieve the same life standards they see at the others.

Unfortunately, sometimes, even though they are really capable and trustworthy, the success is

not coming and it causes stress and depression.

The lack of money affects the most important part in a society: families. The rate of divorces

in Romania has increased with 10% in the past year according to the National Institute of

Statistics. The same source reveals that more of the 55% of the divorces have the same

reason: marriage problems due to money issues.

One of the main causes of depression in a contemporary society is materialism. As members

of our society it is our responsibility to take control over the external the things that seem to

control us in a wrong direction.
