Pilgrim Road: A Benedictine Journey through Lent by Albert Holtz, O.S.B.

  • The Bible passage for 2020 at Holy Trinity is Ephesians 3:20-21: Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to God from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. It is a wonderful prayer that sums up our calling and our hope. It is indeed a Godly calling to build up the church from generation to generation. Holy Trinity has remained strong from generation to generation, largely because we have remained united. Parishioners have steadfastly remained generous and faithful. Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is in a very good place to continue, and to grow in this new decade. Parishioners join together and work hard at the Thrift Shop, in the flower guild and altar guild, on building and grounds projects, on the health ministry team, and in all the other areas of ministry in this church. Why? The answer is largely so that the church can thrive from generation to generation in Christ Jesus. We work so very hard, at least in part, for the people who will come after us. We are blessed to have a place where together we can be a “family of God.” Others who came before us at Holy Trinity made that possible. We will not squander their work. We join those who went before in giving glory to God from generation to generation. It is important to understand that even as we work… God gives the growth. The sacrificial giving of time, talent and treasure in this parish is incredible, but it is God who infuses those gifts with power working in us, so that our efforts yield results that are infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. So what to expect in 2020? There will be a Parish Camping Trip and a Women’s Retreat in February. Our

new photo directory is well underway. We will finish the remaining small projects in the Historic Chapel and hold a grand celebration on March 8th. The parish will be part of building a home for a family in need with Habitat for Humanity. Lift-Up, which graduated its first class in 2019, now has new students learning life skills and faith. Our children and youth ministries will remain strong. And next summer, we hope to send more kids to Camp Wingmann than ever before! Bible Study and faith formation opportunities will expand. Vulnerable elders will be ministered to in their times of greatest need. In all of these ministries and more, we will depend on the Power of God experienced in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in this church.Come and meet Jesus here. Jesus will pull you up. He will pull you through. He will give you the work you need to do! And don’t forget to spread the Good News. If we are going to reverse the downward trend of so many churches, we must say to others, “Come and see! Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is a place where you can see the power of God working in God’s people, and it is marvelous indeed. As we invite others to join our Holy Trinity Family, we give God the glory! So now with true intention that the ministry of this church will be secured for future generations, we remind you of the verse for 2020: Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to God from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.

    Faithfully,

Rev. Pam and Fr. St eve

From Your Flower Guild: Remember your loved ones! Celebrate your children, your grandchildren, even a beloved pet! Honor your anniversary! Altar flowers in the sanctuary and chapel are a special

way to honor those we love. Select the date on the flower calendar posted in the narthex near the glass doors leading into the sanctuary. Select the weekend date you desire. There are envelopes provided for you to give us your pertinent information. Your gift will be acknowledged in the service bulletins for the weekend you select. After more than 30 years, the suggested donation has increased slightly and is now $50. While this amount does not fully cover the cost of flowers each week, it greatly helps. We do, however, want to make it possible for our parishioners to honor their loved ones. Any donation is appreciated.(Please see the flower form below).

  • “Do you want to be made well?”This passage comes from John 5:1-18. It is the story a man who laid by the pool at Beth-zatha for thirty eight years waiting to be thrown in when the water was stirred to be healed. Jesus saw him laying there and asked “Do you want to be made well?” One thing comes to mind is that the sick man had his eyes and his faith on the pool, not on Jesus. Once he focused on the healer, he was healed. I often thought this was a strange question for Jesus to ask, but maybe not. Notice the invalid didn’t exactly answer the question, he just mentioned why he hadn’t been healed. Once healing took place, this man’s life will be changed; for the better, maybe not. This was a man who for most of his life, lay by the pool waiting to be cured. He might have been a beggar. He certainly would have had to have been carried to the pool daily, and maybe those that carried him also supported him. Now that he was healed, he will have to work or learn a trade. This was really a life changer. This newly healed man probably led a very quiet life, void of confrontation. Now the Jews were in his face for carrying a mat on the Sabbath and wanted to know who healed him. Often when we go to the doctors we want to be healed, but do we really? If we have diabetes and are told to follow a specific diet, exercise; watch your weight; control your sugar, do we? How about the diagnosis of hypertension? Do we follow the needed low salt diet, do we take our medication as directed, and are we losing the weight that will help lower our blood pressure? Do we really want to be healed? Sometimes sickness puts us in a place where we get lots of attention. With healing come changes, if we lose weight, we will need a new wardrobe. Exercising might mean getting up an hour early or we might have to give up our favorite foods. Healing might entail making new life changes, maybe ones we are not always prepared to make. Remember – prayer can help you each step of the way, especially when we begin to make the changes needed towards that goal. When praying for healing for others, we might assume they want one thing, but they may really need or want something different. We need to ask them what do they want to pray for, what do they want to ask God to do? Ask yourself “Do you want to be made well?”

    Cursillo News

History of Cursillo: Cursillo was first developed in the Roman Catholic Church in Mallorca, Spain in the 1940’s. The thought was to formulate a way to draw active laymen into the work of Christianizing the everyday life settings where they lived. The first Cursillo Three-Day weekend in the U.S. was held in Waco, Texas, in 1957. The first Episcopal Cursillo Three-Day weekend was held in the Diocese of Iowa in 1970. Cursillo means “a short course” in English. The purpose of the Cursillo movement is to convert Christians to a deeper Relationship with God and to help us to understand our individual calling to be a Christian leader. Cursillo is a movement of the church – not a separate organization with its own agenda. We would like to start Ultreyas again so if you have attended a Cursillo previously, please contact Chuck Pierce: [email protected] or Cheryl Stephens: clstephs@aol and indicate your interest. We will decide whether to pursue this or not depending on the response. You can also email [email protected] and put Cursillo in the subject line. The next Cursillos are scheduled for the following: April 17-19 Men’s Weekend April 24-26 Women’s Weekend October 9-11 Coed WeekendThanks! Cheryl and Chuck
