FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Isaiah 58:7-10, 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Matthew 5:13-16 Brief Reflection: We are the salt of the earth. Light is an important image in our readings to-day. True disciples of Jesus witness to others and help illuminate their way to God. As salt of the earth, our deeds must always lead others to Christ, or else we are like flavorless salt.

A Word from Fr. James… Last week in the Church we celebrated the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This day falls on the fortieth day after the Nativity of the Lord. All first born male children had to be presented in the temple to the Lord. At the Nativity of the Lord, the Light of the world came, conquering all dark-ness.

Here at Sacred Heart and St. Louis Church we have a special place where Jesus and his light shines and that is in our adora-tion chapel, where the Lord is perpetually adored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People from all over come and spend time with Jesus in his real presence, in his true light.

We have a few guidelines that we want to follow when we come to the adoration chapel to pray. Please take a few mo-ments to review these guidelines, so that all will have that sa-cred time before the Lord.

Additionally, you may have noticed that there are some chairs missing in the adoration chapel. We are in the process of hav-ing the chairs re-covered and new cushions put in. Thank you to all that donated to this Christmas wish list item.

Fr. James

Notice from Pastoral Council: “As many of you

have noticed, at our weekend Masses, the ushers have been bringing up our prayer petition book during the Presentation of Gifts. To reinforce the importance of coming together as a Catholic community at the Mass and to recognize and cele-brate the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, beginning in February, our ushers will be asking families to assist in bringing up the gifts to be offered at the Mass. Your active participation in the Mass is greatly appreciated"

IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE PARISH AND HAVE NOT SIGNED UP TO BE AN ACTIVE CLEANER, call Marianne at 503-508-0451 to become a cheerful cleaner. As parishioners, we take pride in keeping the Lord’s House a clean and peaceful place of wor-ship. We cannot afford to hire staff to clean the church weekly, but for 2020 we rely on 24 teams of parishion-ers (men, women, and older children) to vacuum, dust, empty trash, vacuum the Adoration Chapel and clean the Chapel’s glass doors every Friday or Saturday. IF TEAMS DO NOT CLEAN as assigned, we all miss the beauty of a clean church. We thank all the teams who did their jobs in 2019 and hope the following weeks of 2020 find cheerful workers for the Lord!

Come join in the fun! Our next Parish Movie Night is Sunday, February 23, at 4:30 pm, up-stairs in the gym. Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal 2020 Most past contributors to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal have received a mailing from Archbishop Sample. Please drop these into the nearest post office or bring them to the church office. The Archbishop's Catholic Appeal (ACA) supports the Archdio-cese's ministries in western Oregon - including pastoral minis-tries and care for the priesthood. Pastoral ministries spread the word of Jesus to all people in eve-

ry step of their spiritual journey. Our ministers actively bring the love of God into people's lives by providing supportive care to those who are sick or suffering, people with disabili-ties, people who are deaf, and those in prison. Parishes, ethnic vicariates and campus ministries throughout western Oregon also benefit from the ACA. The ACA also provides for the Holy Orders by caring for retired priests, educating the next generation of priests, and supporting the permanent diaconate.

Shoe Battle 2020! Blanchet’s Leadership class is reaching out for any extra hands this year to help with the shoe battle. We will need all the help we can get. The battle will begin February 18

th and end March 3

rd. The

shoe battle has been going on for several years now, and the main goal is to collect as many shoes as we can and donate them to homeless kids, teens and young adults, in the Salem-Keizer district. We are collecting new or slightly used shoes except for the following, Ballet flats, slippers, sandals, or flip flops, as these shoes break easily or take up too much room. Please place these shoes in the box marked shoe battle in Sacred Heart vestibule. Thank you! Our target as a school is 1,250 pairs of shoes, any of the following will count as one pair of shoes; Athletic shoes, cleats, skate shoes, tennis shoes, flat boots, high heels/dress shoes, 5 New pairs of socks, 25 New Shoe laces.
