    7TH EUROPEAN INTERDISTRICT

    ZONTA SEMINAR

    Dear Zontians and guests,

a very warm welcome to all of you – thank you for coming to Vienna to participate in the 7th European Interdistrict Zonta Seminar. The idea to organize Interdistrict Seminars came out in the middle of the 1990th as a consequence to the splitting of the big District 14 into five smaller European Districts. The purpose since then is to bring together Zontians from the eight Districts to maintain Zonta friendship and to provide a platform for reflections and discussions on themes of great actuality, in particular themes related to Zonta´s advocacy strategies and the working methods. The seminars are prepared voluntarily by individual groups of Zontians and differ from the District Conferences: no business sessions, no decision-making. Zontians and guests participate in the seminars, highly motivated to bring forward Zonta’s mission. Eminent Zontians and high level experts are invited for keynote speeches and to present workshops. The first European Interdistrict Zonta Seminar was held in 1995 in Lübeck: “How to be a Zontian in Europe”. Followed by seminars in: 2002 Stuttgart: “Zonta in a changing society: Responding to European Challenges”; 2009 Bonn: “Zonta’s way forward: How to implement women’s rights; 2011 Bonn: “Keep up women’s rights! Enhancing Zonta’s ability to improve the status of women in the future”; 2013 Tampere: “Women in the 21st Century - Old Problems, New Solutions”; 2015 Brugge: “Empowering women in decision-making”. With the Vienna Seminar we will provide again a platform for lively discussions on several women specific issues lined out in the program. We hope to encourage Zontians for an exchange of views on effective strategies, mechanism and actions. We will reflect and respond to European challenges on the way to improve the status of

women in the future. Let us learn from the professional expertise and experience of each of us and let us be open to new perspectives. We will be honoured by the presence of our International President Sonja Hönig Schough and other members of the Zonta International Board. Their presence gives an extra dimension to the Vienna Seminar. Congratulations and special warm thanks to Inge Geyer, PID, and her wonderful Vienna Team, the organisers of this Seminar, and to the workshop-leaders from different districts. Let’s have a productive, thought-provoking and inspiring seminar! And enjoy the Zonta friendship.

Yours, Karin Nordmeyer, PID Co-Initiator European Seminars

    Dear Zontians, dear guests,

a very warm welcome in Vienna. We are very proud and pleased that so many Zontians registered for the 7th European Seminar and we are doing our best to make this weekend a memorable experience for all of us. We like to thank Karin Nordmeyer for suggesting to organize this seminar in Vienna, where the first club in Europe was founded in 1930. When we started planning the seminar in summer 2015 governments and civil society had to scope with a new dimension of human rights issues. So we wanted to give ZONTIANS a platform to discuss ways and means of response to these new challenges. The number of participants shows the great interest and importance of the topic. We are honoured that ZI President Sonja Hönig Schough and the international board are with us and make the seminar to a very special event. The members of the three Viennese Zonta Clubs wish you a pleasant time in Vienna.

    Your organizing team:

Ingeborg Geyer (Chairperson) Margot Fleck (Vice Chairperson)

Eva Maria Kodek-Werba (Treasurer) Mia Matisek (Secretary)

Christine Zöchling (Eventbooking) Gerda Senkyr (Sponsoring)

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear participants of the ZONTA seminar,

as Vienna’s Executive City Councillor for Women’s Issues, I am delighted that the seventh European ZONTA seminar is held in Vienna. Our city has a strong political focus on women’s affairs. In cooperation with policymakers, various partners in Vienna work together to empower women and girls: private associations, initiatives and many other organisations offer a wide range of targeted services supporting women in all stages of life.

The City of Vienna devotes due attention to future challenges in achieving equal rights for women. This includes assistance for women who have just arrived as they start an independent life in Vienna, but also measures to close the gender pay gap and policies to end violence against women and girls, a phenomenon that, unfortunately, still persists. All these topics deserve our continued attention and relentless commitment. In my work as the member of the Vienna City Government in charge of women’s issues, I aim to enable all women and girls in this city to lead a safe, empowered and independent life. We have already managed to make changes improving the rights and chances of women in Vienna and worldwide, but it is still a long way to go before equality is achieved. To get there, we all need to join forces and pull in the same direction. There is no doubt that thematic events like the ZONTA seminar play a key role for effective networking and knowledge exchange. On this note I want to wish you inspiring discussions at this year’s seminar, and thank your organisation for its important work in promoting women’s policies and women’s rights. We stand together in solidarity with women worldwide.

Sandra Frauenberger Executive City Councillor for Women’s Issues Mayor of the City of Vienna
