Religion & Ethics Newsweekly Final ShowThe much-honored and highly acclaimed series covering religion, spirituality, and ethics in America and around the world, will end its run as its 20th season on PBS draws to a close on February 26, 2017.

When Religion & Ethics launched in September 1997, the idea of a weekly television news program devoted to providing cutting-edge news coverage and analysis of nation-al and international events in the ever-changing religion world was groundbreaking.

Founded by veteran broadcast journalist Bob Abernethy, Religion & Ethics quickly established itself as a thoughtful, credible, and balanced source for religion news.

Almost two decades later, this one-of-a-kind TV show has built a reputation for pre-senting meaningful stories and insightful perspectives in documentary segments and discussions with newsmakers, scholars and policy analysts to examine religion’s role and the ethical dimensions behind top news headlines.

Host and Executive Editor Abernethy said, “It has been a great privilege to report the many ways people of faith worship and serve others. We are deeply grateful to our thoughtful staff and also to our viewers, many of whom have told us the program consistently affirms the values they most respect.”

Religion & Ethics has covered religion’s complex role in politics and the national debate over issues such as immigration, poverty and health care. And it has showcased humanitarian efforts across America and the globe to make the world a better place.

Make sure to watch this award winning show’s last broadcast on Sunday, February 26th at 1:30 pm.

Dis-tinctly referred to as “a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture,” she gave people the

freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before. Dr. Angelou’s was a prolific life; as a singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought that pushed boundaries. This unprecedented film weaves her words with rare and in-timate archival photographs and videos, which paint hidden moments of her exuberant life during some of America’s most defining moments. From her upbringing in the Depression-era South to her work with Malcolm X in Ghana to her inaugural poem for President Bill Clinton, the film takes us on an incredible journey through the life of a true American icon.

Mercy Street ReturnsNew Season to Takes Viewers Even Further Beyond the Hospital with Intimate Look at Lives on the Civil War Battlefield and Home Front MERCY STREET, the much-acclaimed Civil War-era drama set in the occupied city of Alexandria, Virginia, will return to WTVP for a second season on January 22 2017, at 7:00 p.m. CT. Allegiances blur, loyalties shift and the drama intensifies as the scope of the war pushes beyond Mansion House, the former hotel commandeered by northern troops to serve as a Union hospital.

Executive produced by Ridley Scott (The Martian, Gladiator, Thelma and Louise and “The Good Wife”); David W. Zucker (“BrainDead,” “The Good Wife” and “The Man in the High Castle”) of Scott Free; Lisa Q. Wolfinger (“Desperate Crossing, the untold story of the Mayflower”) and David Zabel (“ER”), the series follows the doctors, nurses and soldiers, as well as free, enslaved and contraband African Americans and other residents of the war-torn city, as they navigate the new world emerging from the most cataclysmic event in our country’s history.

Season Two picks up directly from the dramatic events at the end of the first season finale, continuing to explore life in the chaotic city of Alexandria, the complicated interpersonal dynamics of Dr. Foster, Nurse Mary and the Mansion House staff, the increasingly precarious position of the Green family and the changing world of the burgeoning black population. The second season will introduce a number of new elements, taking the viewer closer to the war and into the halls of Confederate power, all set against the intensifying war, starting with the Seven Days’ Battle and culminating with Antietam.

The new season also delves deeper into the lives of newly freed African Americans, exploring – among other areas – life in a contraband camp, where formerly enslaved African Americans are forced to confront horrific living conditions and disease, but also get a glimpse of freedom.

In the most innovative production Nature has ever presented, this five-part series employs more than 30 animatronic spy cameras disguised as animals

to secretly record behavior in the wild. These “spycams” reveal animals as having emotions and behavior similar to humans:

specifically, a capacity to love, grieve, deceive, and invent. Among the featured Spy Creatures are: Spy Orangutan, Spy Croc Hatchling, Spy Meerkat, Spy Egret, Spy Tortoise, Spy Prairie

Dog, Spy Macaw, Spy Sloth, Spy Cobra, Spy Bushbaby, Spy Squirrel, Spy Adelie, and Spy Baby Hippo. These robotic, uncanny look-alikes infiltrate the natural world to film surprising behavior among wildlife from around the globe.

Spy in the Wild, A NATURE Miniseries airs Wednesdays, February 1, 8, 15, 22, and March 1, 2017 at 7 p.m. After each broadcast, that episode will be available for limited online streaming at pbs.org/nature.

Miniseries producer and director John Downer, whose productions such as Earthflight and Penguins: Spy in the Huddle, were presented by Nature, says this was the first “spycam” series to be shot in ultra-high-definition (UHD) and is “the most ambitious and biggest Spy series yet.” Downer explains that the series’ aim “was to capture these elusive moments where animals do something so extraordinary that makes us consider our own connection with the natural world. Inevitably those moments are rare, but by deploying a menagerie of lifelike Spy Creatures and other remote cameras over long periods of time and filming thousands of hours of footage, it was possible to capture many never-seen-before moments.” “This series is a big step up from how we currently view and understand animals,” says Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman. “It is surprising in every way.”

The special sequences recorded by the Spy Creatures’ built-in cameras are many:

• Spy Croc Hatchlings not only captured on film a female Nile crocodile gathering her babies in her mouth for the first time in the wild, but these robotic look-alikes were also picked up with the baby crocs showing what it was like as the mother croc carried them all underwater.

• Spy Tortoise caught the attention of a young chimpanzee who becomes uncharacteristically possessive of this new-found toy or pet, unwilling to share it with other chimps.

• Spy Langur, embedded with a group of 120 langur monkeys in India, is grabbed and dropped by a teenage lan-gur, prompting a gathering of the mon-keys around the motionless “spycam” in a sign of empathy and mourning.

• Spy Chick reveals life inside a tree nest, where a female red-billed hornbill is confined with her chicks and dependent on her mate to feed them for more than two months through a slit in the walled-up entrance before making her way out.

• Spy Bushbaby was present with other conventional cameras to help docu-ment a filming first as a young chimp befriends an abandoned genet kitten and tries to gently comfort it, showing compassion for another species.

Never Underestimate the Power of a Party!January 16, 2017

WTVP launched the new 24/7 PBS Kids channel with its own local TV production and launch party. WTVP focused on the Peoria viewing community by inviting local children’s experts, elected officials, partners and of course some very excited children. While Yvonne Greer (local talent) interviewed experts and staff on the changes taking place, the children were entertained with crafts, PBS Playpads, a few live animals and a visit from Curious George. This on-air launch appeared on all three multicasts.

The WTVP Endowment FundWTVP’s Endowment Fund was established in 1984 by a local family eager to ensure the future of public broadcasting in central Illinois. They have always chosen to remain anonymous, but they continue to support their vision by matching the first $10,000 in individual donations to the WTVP Endowment Fund campaign each year. Our total-to-date for this year’s campaign is $21,090. WTVP extends our gratitude to them for building this important “rainy day” fund, and to the caring individuals listed below whose donations continue to make the fund thrive. Thank you.If you would like to join these donors and have a long-term impact on WTVP’s future, please call the WTVP Development Office at 309-495-0547.
