And how is it making our cities smarter, improving mobility, and enabling our lives to be more convenient? Increasingly innovation is being driven by technologies that connect one physical object to another ‐ whether it's a vehicle, building, infrastructure, or a person ‐‐ allowing them to network and interact with each other. And the acronyms you can't escape these days, IoT (Internet of Things) and ICT (Information Communication Technologies) are the connecting systems that add intelligence to these physical objects. For instance, by adding a few sensors/controls to a streetlight and allowing wireless communications we can create a "smart" streetlight, allowing it to sense, report, communicate, control and respond to its environment. By adding daylight sensors, the streetlight can now control itself to switch "on" when there is no daylight and "off" when the sun rises. Read more . NextEnergy BlogConnected technologies: enabling the intersections of smart cities

Connected technologies...ICT, IoT...what does it all mean? And how is it making ourcities smarter, improving mobility, and enabling our lives to be more convenient?

Increasingly innovation is being driven by technologies that connect one physical objectto another ‐ whether it's a vehicle, building, infrastructure, or a person ‐‐ allowing themto network and interact with each other. And the acronyms you can't escape thesedays, IoT (Internet of Things) and ICT (Information Communication Technologies) arethe connecting systems that add intelligence to these physical objects.

For instance, by adding a few sensors/controls to a streetlight and allowing wirelesscommunications we can create a "smart" streetlight, allowing it to sense, report,communicate, control and respond to its environment. By adding daylight sensors, thestreetlight can now control itself to switch "on" when there is no daylight and "off"when the sun rises. Read more.

There has been a lot of interest inhome automation (HA) andconnected home devices recently.The HA market is anticipated to growto 1.8 billion devices worldwide in2019 according to Business Insiderforecasts. Certainly, this year'sConsumer Electronics Show (CES)provided evidence as to just how biga force this market is in technologydevelopment, featuring a hugenumber of new automation devicesand services. While this market is stillfragmented and chaotic, the growthcoincides with interest from utilities

and retail energy providers in distributed generation, energystorage, and in‐home devices and signals a natural intersectionfor the HA market and energy suppliers. Read more.
