Hi everyone, In my day, communication between friends was every bit as important as it is today. Technology, having moved along in leaps and bounds, has made the whole process faster, what with email, text, Facebook and twitter to name but a few.

When I was little a lot of the fathers were shift-workers and you’d ‘run the gauntlet’ of a good stiff telling off if you knocked on a friend’s door and woke up the dad.

In order to prevent such wraths we used to leave messages outside our friends’ houses written on the pavement in chalk, such as “Gone down woods” or “Over the river” or “Up on the hills” which at times could be very confusing especially if you weren’t sure which message was the last one written. A lot of time got wasted trudging to the wrong venue and it was not uncommon to bump into a friend ‘up on the hills’ who was carrying his fishing rod having read the wrong message as the latest information and asking “Have you seen Bob?” to which I might reply “No, have you seen Philip?”

A little while back one of the lads who works for me was a bit down in the dumps so I asked what the matter was. “I haven’t any credit on my phone and can’t text my girlfriend” was the reply.

“Really?” I said. “When I was your age my girlfriend lived 8 miles away. Her parents didn’t have a phone in the house so if I wanted to ask her out to a dance on Saturday I had to send her a postcard”. On more than one occasion I arrived home the following Monday after work to find a postcard from her saying “I’d love to! What time?” Stay safe everyone
