th
Sunday after theEpiphany
Yesterday was not a good day. In the morning To-ny and I had to put our beloved Golden Retriever C.J. tosleep, just 9 months after having to put down her caninecompanion Zach. In the evening I received a phone callletting me know that a man Id known for 35 years had
just died. These deaths are sources of grief.
Admittedly, losing a person is not the same as los-ing a pet. There are certainly different degrees of grief. Is there anything more heart-wrenching than a parent bur-ying a child? Not all losses are the same. But grief isgrief and it has to be felt, dealt with, and walked through. How long it lasts and how it affects behavior is an indi-vidual matter. Grief cant be rushed, ignored, or pretend-ed away. And it can be tricky, sneaking back up on uswhen we thought it was all over and done with.
When I was 15 our family dog died. I told my
mother that Id never love another animal again becausethe pain of losing Laddie was just too great. My mothersaid to me, Pain is the price we pay for love. And love isworth it. Because every living thing dies, its inevitablethat love eventually leads to loss, sorrow, grief. As mywise mother knew, the solution is not to stop loving. Thesolution is to accept that love is worth the pain of loss.Love is what makes our lives worth living. Love isGods very self, given to one another. What a wondrousgift indeed.

Mardi Gras Party Planning
St. Francis @ the Eagles Nest
Save the date! Saturday, February 15th. Thats when St. Fran-
cis folks of all ages can get together to watch the eagles eat theirlunch, and to have a little lunch ourselves. Its so exciting to see theeagles swoop down and take raw fish from the river! Its also nice thatwell have eaten a hot meal: raw fish is not on the menu at Pere Mar-quette State Park. Here are the particulars:
9:30 A.M. Meet at the Parish House to arrange carpools and cara-vans.
11:30 Eat lunch at Pere Marquette Lodge.
After: Go to the visitors center to watch eagles.
After After: Grafton is a fun place to poke around if you like an-tique shops, etc.
Sue Schmidt will bring maps to church on Sundays before the 15th. Thanks, Sue, for or-ganizing this!
Note: One preliminary plan was to go take ferries to the old Whitmond Hotel andeat lunch there, but this winter is too cold and the ferries are mostly closed! Suesays well try again in fairer weather.
On Sunday, March 2, 2014 we will be hosting a Mardi Gras Par-
ty to invite friends, neighbors and the wider community to join us, as we
did with our Test Drive event. There will be a brief planning meet-
ingon Sunday, Feb 9 immediately following worship. Well need every-
ones help to plan food, games, and a Mardi Gras Parade for kids -and
kids at heart!
Start gathering up your beads, get your gumbo recipe ready, andbe part of the planning group to make Mardi Gras a time of welcome and great fun for all of
our guests. Please contact Annette Carr to offer your party planning assistance. 636-256-4454/

Sacristan^+ex ^+o = Sexton
For years, it seems, weve been mislabeling the essential job done by
the one who gets to church almost as early as the priest, and leaves cof-
fee hour just before she does. Weve been calling this person the
sacristan and the mis-label here is that the sacristan is the one who
cares for the leftover, consecrated wine after the service is ended. In our parish, the Altar
Guild does that job ably.
The sexton is the properly-named person who helps to convert the Masons meeting
space into our worship space by setting up chairs, distributing Prayer Books, putting out
service leaflets and so on. Then, as people start to arrive, the Sexton makes sure that all
scheduled people (lectors, acolyte, etc.) are in place. When someone is absent and has not
already asked someone else to substitute, the sexton quickly finds a replacement. After
service, the sexton supervises the dismantling of our worship furnishings, stays through
Adult Forum, supervises the cleanup of the coffee hour materials, takes out the trash and
makes sure the doors are locked when the Vicar is ready to leave.
Whew! No wonder we only have two sextons! No wonder we are hesitant to ask
for more. In order to pare down this job and make it a better fit for more adults who might
volunteer to help, Worship and Music have decided to split the job in half, asking people to
serve as a beginning or as an ending sexton. Half the work, half the time commitment, and
exactly the same pay. Imagine that! Pastor Sally and one of the two existing sextons, Jim
Eckhardt and Richard Mayfield, will provide a proper job description and appropriate
training. Please see one of them if you can volunteer to take a turn performing this essen-
tial worship duty.
E Scrip Cards
E scrip cards to be used at Schnucks
are always available in the lobby ofthe Lodge. With no cost to you, by
using your E Scrip card, St. Francis
receives a cash for a percentage of the
cost of your groceries. Its easy and it
helps us.

Bless Your House this Epiphany
The wise mens arrival at the house where Jesus lay has given rise to the ritual of a house
blessing during the season of Epiphany. House blessings can be performed by a priest or you can
perform it yourself on your own home. The rite is outlined in the EpiscopalBook of Occasional
Services.
To perform the rite youll need chalk, prayer, and a desire for Gods blessing. Begin by
gathering your household around the lintel of your front door. Then say: Peace be to this house
and to all who dwell in it. With the chalk mark the lintel of your front door as follows: 20 + C +
M + B + 14.
The C, M, and B stand for Caspar, Melchoir, and Balthasar, the legendary names for the
wise men. The 20 and 14 represent this year of 2014. This reminds you that you are like the wise
men who followed the star to Jesus house. You too are on a pilgrimage to find, worship, and fol-
low Jesus.
You may follow the chalk-marking with a prayer:
O God, by the leading of the star you manifested your only Son to the people of the earth:
Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and for ever. Amen.
You may finish this rite with the following prayer:
Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live
here with the gift of your love; and grant that they may manifest your love to each other and to all
those whose lives they touch. May they grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you;
guide, comfort, and strengthen them; and preserve them in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and for ev-
er. Amen.
May your home be a place of warmth, laughter, and love in 2014. Pastor Sally

Whats a Bishops Committee?
The Bishops Committee is the governing body of St. Francis Church. Comprising 10
people, the Bishops Committee serves as the leadership of the congregation in matters both ma-terial (finances, property, etc.) and spiritual. St. Francis receives funds from the Diocese; we
are not self-supporting. Because we receive money from the Diocese we are under the direct
purview of the Bishop. Therefore instead of being called a parish, were called a mission.
Instead of a Rector as a priest-in-charge we have a Vicar. Instead of a Senior Warden we
have a Bishops Wardenbecause this person is appointed by the Bishop, not by the priest.
And instead of a vestry as a governance board we have a Bishops Committee.
Whats a Diocesan delegate?
Each year in November all the churches in the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri gather for
worship, to elect members of Diocesan-wide committees such as Standing Committee, and to
adopt next years budget for the Diocese. This gathering is called Diocesan Convention. St.
Francis sends two people to the Diocesan Convention to serve as delegates. Those delegates
vote on behalf of St. Francis on all legislative matters put before the Convention. Those matters
include the Diocesan budget, membership on Diocesan committees, and resolutions put before
Convention.

Hello. And Good-Bye
Its a good thing that were accustomed to reading Scriptures with two opposing but still
true messages. This month, as our Parish Administrator changes, we are truly sad and truly happy
at the same time. Both facts are Gospel truth.
Beth Koch has been at St. Francis for less than a year, and in that time we learned to love
her, appreciate her good work for the parish, and come to count on her cheerful voice answering
the phone. With that same good cheer, she answered Pastor Sallys call in desperate moments to
take over as Parish Administrator when the position had suddenly become vacant. Beth jumped
into the job, producing bulletins and newsletters, B.C. documents, and making sure our employees
and vendors got paid. Beth even found time to reorganize and redecorate the office. Having done
her part and then some, Beth is eager to move on and actually be the retired person she claims to
be. She is staying on the job while Barbi Click learns the lay of the land. We will miss her!
Barbi Click has, at this writing, already started working with Beth and Pastor Sally. We
are thrilled to have Barbi with us and are looking forward to great things. Barbi is a native Texan
but moved to St. Louis in 2008 with her partner and son. While still in Texas, Barbi earned a
Bachelor Degree from TCU and a Master of Theological Studies at Brite Divinity School in Fort
Worth. She has been a member of the Episcopal Church since 1986.

About Taiz Worship
Our Taiz service is based on the worship of the Taiz community in France. An international, ecu-menical community founded by three Lutheran monks amid the turmoil World War II, theTaizcommunity in Burgundy is committed to peace and reconciliation. The community is now hometo 100 monks from all over the world. Hundreds of young people from around the globe flocktoTaizeach week to join the monks in their prayers for the reconciliation of all people.
Each day atTaizthe bells ring out three times calling the community and visitors to pray-
er. Those prayers occur in quiet services of prayer, scripture, silence and chant. The worship ofthe Taizcommunity is known especially for the simple, repetitive chants of these contemplativeservices. Often sung in Latin, the international language, the chants, invite us to enter the depthsof our being where we may be still and know the Presence of God.
At the monthly service (the fourth Sunday of each month) offered by Confluence: A Center forSpiritualityand The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, the church is filled with candlelightas the rich voice of the soprano cantor calls us to prayer while the choir and piano lead us in thechants of Taiz. In the chants and the silence, we pray for Gods peace in our hearts and in thehearts of all people. We invite you to join us in those prayers.
Taiz Worship returns to theEpiscopal Church of the Good
Shepherd on
Sunday evening, January 26,at 6:00 pm.
