As reported at January’s annual meeting, St.
Francis’ added 15 people to our list of ―members
in good standing‖ during 2010. I’ve recently
heard a couple of people say, ―Pastor Sally, you
did that.‖ While I know it’s meant to be com-
plimentary, I’m uncomfortable with that sentiment for a number of rea-
sons.
First, it’s not true. The growth in numbers at St. Francis’ is be-
cause of who we are as a community: mission-minded, Christ-centered,
caring, and forgiving. We’re people who welcome visitors on Sundays.
We’re people who act to help those in need. We’re people for whom
worship and learning about our faith are important. We’re people who
enjoy being together. We’re people who laugh a lot. We are growing
because of who we are – this band of Jesus followers we call St. Fran-
cis’ Church -- not because of any one person, and certainly not because
of the vicar.
Second, if we lose people from St. Francis’ – and we will – does
that mean that it’s the fault of the vicar? If we attribute the growth to
the vicar, do we also place 100% of the blame for losing members
(including those who move away or die) on her?
Third, growing the church is the charge given to all Christians,
not just the ones who wear funny collars. When Jesus commanded his
followers, ―Make disciples of all nations,‖ none of those around him
was ordained. Sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in our words and
deeds with this hurting world is everyone’s responsibility as a follower
of Christ.

I can’t think of anything we do at St. Francis’ that’s
a solo act. Our worship, our ministries, our teaching, our
praying is all done with others. Whatever we accomplish,
we accomplish together. The Bishop’s Committee has set a
goal for St. Francis’ to increase our membership by 10% in
2011. If we’re going to achieve it, we’ll all have to embrace
it.
How do we grow our church? We’ll explore that
question together as we read and study Unbinding the Gos-
pel for 6 weeks during Lent. Beginning on Mar 13, we’ll
discuss this church growth book during the Adult Forum,
11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Sundays.
One vital way we grow our church is through prayer.
Every Sunday morning and every Monday night we gather
and pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of St. Fran-
cis’. It’s not a coincidence that we’ve prayed…and we’ve
grown.
We are growing and will continue to grow. It takes
all of us. I feel blessed to be journeying with you as we
deepen our relationships with God and one another and as
we spread the message of God’s love. We are growing in
service, growing in faith, growing in Christ. As we extend
the invitation, others will come grow with us.

Speakers’ Series on Youth
Substance Abuse
Keeping Teens Safe During Spring Break,
Prom and Graduation Season
Spring is a very high risk period for teen
alcohol and other drug use, and adults must be
aware of the consequences of youth decisions
made under the influence. Parents must also un-
derstand that when they turn the other cheek to
alcohol use, children often look for another
boundary to push. Too many teens are now
learning social, studying, communication and
coping skills under the influence. We owe
these‖ adults under construction‖ our attention.
Be a part of the discussion and the solution.
Learn practical suggestions to encourage
healthy and safe behavior among teens. Join us

session.

Prayer List
The Anglican Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand, was just
one of the many locations to suffer terrible damage in Tuesday's earth-
quake. Dean Peter Beck reports that cathedral staff are all accounted for
and safe, but he "fears the worst where cathedral visitors are concerned –
and it’ll be some time before there’s certainty on that score. The destruc-
tion wrought is so great that police and search and rescue teams aren’t focused on those who are be-
yond help. They’re struggling to rescue those who may still be trapped alive within the ruins of the col-
lapsed CBD buildings."
Pat Glenn, vicar of Calvary Church-Louisiana and St. John's-Eolia wrote that her daughter
Marty is just outside of Christchurch and says the city resembles a war zone. "She is safe and due home
on Friday - assuming flights are up and going. Where she has been, she reports, you wouldn't know
there had been an earthquake except for the electricity outage. She asks for prayers for those of New
Zealand whose lives are turned upside down."

Lenten Evenings on Prayer
Four evenings on the subject of prayer are on tap

Each session will include presentation, conversation,
and an experience of prayer, and will be held on Thurs-
days from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Parish House.

Prayer
Each session will build on the last, but can stand
alone as well. You are welcome to attend even if you are
unable to make every session. You may bring your din-
ner if that is convenient. Popcorn will be provided.
Kristie Lenzen will lead the sessions. Kristie has
a M.A. in Pastoral Studies and has been in ministry for
many years. She is a member of St. Francis’ Parish.

Bishop’s Committee Meeting Schedule
The Bishop’s Committee meets on the third
Sunday of the month beginning at 12:15 p.m. All
are welcome to sit in and listen.
Bishop’s Committee Highlights
February12, 2011 The Bishop’s Committee approved the 2010
parochial report, which is filed with the Diocese
and the national church.
We will send a multi-year lease to the Dio-
cese for approval. Our landlady, Mrs. Butler, has
agreed to a 3-year lease on 210 S. Central with only
a nominal rent increase.
Bishop’s Committee News St. Francis’ paid for snow removal 3 times
in one week because of all the ice and snow accu-
mulation. This benefited the Masons, since the
lot was clear for their Sunday breakfast. Pastor
Sally has sent a letter to the Masons, suggesting
that in exchange for our paying to clear the park-
ing lot they allow us to use the Lodge during
Holy Week without charge. The Masons’ treas-
urer believes that this idea should be acceptable.
This will enable us to keep our budget balanced.
Bishop’s Committee meetings will be held
on the 3rd Sunday of the month following the
Adult Forum. The next meeting is March 20.

Michael Booker to Serve on Diocesan Task Force
As you can see from the communication from the Office of the Bishop, Mi-
chael Booker has been asked by the Bishop to participate in a task force to study
the Anglican Covenant. Our thanks and congratulations to Michael in taking on
this task.
At the 171st Convention of the Diocese of Missouri, meeting last November, I mentioned in my address my plan ―to appoint a Diocesan task force to study the Covenant, to gather data from the Diocese, and to distribute their learnings to us by the end of 2011.‖
I am writing to ask you to consider accepting my appointment to serve on this Task Force.
This is important work for our Diocese and for the life of the Communion, and I very much hope that you will say Yes.
Faithfully,
Wayne Smith
Bishop of Missouri
Vicar’s Discretionary Fund
―I’m stranded here in Eureka – I’m driving to
Arkansas for a job there and I’ve run out of money
for gas.‖ ―Please help me – I’m having to choose
between buying food and buying medicine for my
baby.‖ Sadly, I hear requests for help like these
almost daily.
The only way I can help people in need is
through the Vicar’s Discretionary Fund. And the
Vicar’s Discretionary Fund only has money in it if
you, the parishioners of St. Francis’, contribute to
it.
In the last year the Vicar’s Discretionary Fund
has:
helped a young woman to find safe housing
for herself and her infant
enabled a couple to reach Chicago and land
a job
prevented a family from having to choose
between buying food or keeping their heat
on this winter
Any amount you can contribute is helpful.
Please make your check out to ―St. Francis’
Episcopal Church‖ with ―Vicar’s discretionary
fund‖ in the memo line. This fund can make a
world of difference in people’s lives by restor-
ing hope and the knowledge that we care.

We would love to publish important dates for
ALL members of the congregation, your birth date,
anniversaries, and other date of importance to you.
BUT — in order to publish we need the facts!
So that official parish records may be updated,
you are urged to pick up and complete one of the
salmon-colored sheets that are available in the lobby at
the Lodge each Sunday and return it to the Parish Of-
fice, or just leave it with the Teller sheets for Maxine to pick up. Knowing who to
serve and how best to serve our members, requires data on who we are. Let’s help the
Vicar, Bishop’s Committee and Committee Chairpersons in planning appropriate pro-
grams and activities by letting them know who we are with facts and figures.

Prayer for St. Francis’
We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Open the door of St. Francis’
Church, O God, wide enough to beckon those of every age and situation. Smooth the threshold
into an inviting pathway for children and for straying feet; and fill all who enter here with your
Divine love and peace, and with our human love and fellowship. Amen.

Our Children’s Reflections on
God and the Gospel
What do we know about kings and queens?
Jesus had kings to fight the dragons.
Kings follow God.
Girls are princesses…and ballerinas.
Why do we call Jesus a king?
Because he was a survivor from long
ago.
Because he loved all the little children.
He loved those tax collectors and sur-
vived those people.
The Bible is for everyone to read.
What kind of king lets himself be crucified?
Yellow!
He was the best king ever.
Jesus wanted to live, but they didn’t let
him.
Maybe an angel came and raised him
up.
He makes everyone alive. Jesus does
not make bad bugs and spiders alive.
And one time Mama had a spider in her
hair.
What can a king do?
Save the world.
Help people.
Some dragons are very nice.
Who was Mary going to marry? (Hoping for
“Joseph”.)
Jesus’ father.
What gifts do we give if we have no
money?
Hugs.
Hold hands if we’re sad.
A bunny, a cat, a stuffed
bunny.
Spontaneously offered
Jesus doesn’t like Spiderman.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle
bells away. All this rhyme,
Christmas rhyme, jingle bells
away.
Life is like a racecar track.
What happens if you’re not careful with
fire?
If you’re a grown up, you
should still be careful with fire-
making things.
This whole place could catch
on fire and go up the stairs.
If you cut yourself on your
hand, you need a Band Aid.
What is an Advent wreath?
It’s a Christmas wreath for all
Christmas.
A very special wreath to
Christmas.

“Being Church in the 21st Century”
Leadership Conference for clergy and Lay Members
Saturday, March 5, 2011,
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Registration begins at 8:30)
St. Martin’s, Ellisville
This year’s annual Leadership Conference for clergy and lay members of the diocese is de-
voted to Being Church in the 21st Century. Keynote and lead presenter will be Sabine McDowell. In
addition to creating http://ourgreenchoices.com where she writes about the simple steps that churches,
schools and other nonprofit organizations can take to save energy and save emissions, Sabine is a
member of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and is LEED AP certified. She is co chair of the
Creation Care Ministry at Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood, and she serves on the Climate Action
Task Force for City of Creve Coeur and loves to talk about all things sustainable.
More About Being Church in the 21st Century
Sabine will give a brief overview about how we got here in terms of climate change and how
as Places of Faith we can and need to alleviate suffering through a better understanding of our choices.
She will present information to congregations about no cost energy audits, low cost changes and im-
portant upgrade options that will save energy cost and lower the impact on our environment, God’s
gift to all of us. Along with Sabine’s presentation we will also engage in an in depth conversation re-
garding how being green is linked to our mission of Making Disciples, Building Congregations, for
the Life of The World.
Conference details
The conference is $20 which includes lunch. Registration forms available in doc or pdf format on the

St. Francis’ In-Depth
If you would like more details about St. Francis’ finances, the
Bishop’s Committee meetings, and the Vicar’s activities, please see the bulle-
tin board in the lower level of the Lodge. There you will find two month’s
worth of:
Bishop’s Committee meeting minutes;
Monthly financial reports;

Additionally, on the Sunday immediately following the Bishop’s Committee meeting, the finan-
cial results for the previous month will be reported in the bulletin insert.

St. Francis’ Spiritual Offerings during the Week
Mondays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. at the parish house (210 S. Central)
we gather for prayer.
Using Scripture appointed for that day, we pray for the people of St. Francis’,
those who haven’t joined us yet, those on our prayer list, the needs of our com-
munity, and the world. We close each session with Compline from 6-6:15 p.m.
Fridays from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Parish House (210 S. Central) we
study the Bible readings appointed for the upcoming Sunday.
Please join us for these meetings whenever you can, whether weekly or once in a while. All are
welcome.

Please remember to check in the lobby for
an updated copy of the Calendar and Worship Par-
ticipation Schedule, and the latest Chalice. Check
St. Francis’ website (stfranciseureka.com) for the
latest Chalice on line. The deadline for articles for
the April Chalice is Thursday, March 24.
This is your newsletter, people of St. Fran-
cis’, and we would love to publish pictures and
information about our activities. Please send in-
formation to [email protected] to be pub-
lished in the next edition of the Chalice. Let the
whole parish know about the good things that are
happening at our beloved church.

Please Call Pastor Sally!
Caring for the people of this parish is of utmost importance to me. So please, if you have an
urgent pastoral need, call me. Jesus cared for people whenever and wherever they asked for his help.
That’s the example I’m trying to follow.
If you find yourself in an Emergency Room at 3 a.m., please call me – yes, right then! And if
you would like to talk or you have a question, please call me between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. any day
of the week. My day off is Wednesday, but if you need to talk – call me.
If you’re going to have an operation or medical procedure, please let me know. I’ll meet you at
the hospital/clinic or doctor’s office and we’ll pray beforehand. Even for a routine procedure, if you’re
anxious about it, I’ll meet you at the doctor’s office.
The best way to reach me is my cell phone -- 314-651-3836. If you don’t need to talk and pre-
fer sending an e-mail, write me at [email protected] and I’ll respond to your e-mail. Also
feel free to call my home phone – 636-938-7773, but know that I don’t monitor it as closely as my cell
phone.
One last time: Please call me! -- Pastor Sally†
