Compensation! - what Compensation? Put in your response - deadline 31 January 2013. For an official form call 0300 132 1102, online at http://highspeedrail.dft.gov.uk or send a letter to FREEPOST HS2 PROPERTY AND COMPENSATION CONSULTATION or a Wendover HS2 postcard (01296 623730) or market stall.

Please look at the WHS2 website (www.wendoverhs2.org) for advice and read the leaflet dropped through your door. Weep and then do it NOW. What is offered - compulsory purchase - then the bulldozer for 14 homes in the Safeguarded Area, 60 metres either side of HS2. There are 6 homes in the Voluntary Purchase Zone, within 120m of HS2, whose owners can either wear earplugs or ask to be bought out. For now, the Long Term Hardship Scheme applies to “substantially adversely affected” owner-occupiers (not businesses or landlords) after failing to sell for 12 months within 15% of its pre-HS2 value. Could you wait a year to apply, fight for the money and still lose 15%? After 2027, Statutory Part 1 Compensation, for the reduction in value once HS2 has been running for one year – then, prove it! Cameron claimed it would all be OK and fair - sure!

What else? There is a separate safeguarding consultation about land for the line and lots of “temporary” land for camps, dumps, and roads. Reply to say you want a bored tunnel. But, do property first! The Judicial Review outcome is at the end of January - maybe. Expect judicial appeals and our appeals for more money. It has been a big success so far and upset the government. Northerners are slowly realising that they will be short changed but no detailed announcement yet on the Y arm route. Donate £5+/mth by standing order to save Wendover! For information contact Antony Chapman on [email protected] or 01296 623730 .

Mimi Says Thank You Mimi’s Mission’s hand-made quilt brought in a wonderful £400. It was on show in the window of Cromptons Interiors on the High Street. We would like to thank the shop for their generous support, as well as the kindness of retailers who sold competition tickets including Cromptons, Tourist Information, Little Bird Gallery, Time Fashions, The Flower Gallery, @stmarys, Number One, The Forge, Andrew Gardner, Red Carpet, No2 Pound Street, Agora, Wendover Hardware, Whitewaters, and Scruples. We were also supported by Wendover Junior and John Hampden Schools promoting ticket sales.

The winning ticket was won by William Digby who guessed a time closest to the correct length of sewing time; 367 hours 24 minutes.

Mimi continues to make good progress and the funds raised to date help significantly to cover the cost of several weekly sessions of hydrotherapy and physiotherapy, essential to help continue building the strength of her legs, towards the goal of ultimately walking with sticks. Mimi’s Mission, the group of friends working closely with Mimi’s family to raise a total of £120,000, is almost at its fundraising target. We hope to bring you a full update in a future edition of Wendover News, but meanwhile, for further information,

please don’t hesitate to contact Emma Low on [email protected] Thank you Wendover!

SOBS I am a member of a very exclusive club that I never wanted to join and would not wish upon anyone else – I have lost a loved one to suicide. There is however a wonderful charity run by and for such survivors, called Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide, or SOBS for short. SOBS has a website, http://www.uk-sobs.org.uk/ and a national helpline open 9am to 9pm every day of the year on 0844 561 6855. We have a local group nearby who meet on the 2

nd Monday morning

of each month at Beaconsfield, more details from 07890 973 751.

Aimed at the young, there is a parallel charity. Shockingly, there is a rising trend of children taking their own lives too.

Therefore, I would recommend a charity called Papyrus as a rather more positive angle of prevention rather than picking up the pieces. They are like the Samaritans but aimed at young people and they will intervene if they think the young person is in danger. They have a helpline too (0800 068 41 41, confidential text: 07786 209 697) and they are able to communicate in all these new-fangled texting ways etc that the young use! www.papyrus-uk.org

Compliments and Complaints We are constantly striving to improve the quality of care we offer at Wendover Health Centre, and take all feedback on our performance very seriously. If you are unhappy with any aspect of the service or care you receive at the Health Centre, or alternatively if you are particularly impressed with your experiences, please speak to a member of the Reception staff or put your comments in writing for attention of Ms Enfys Lewis, Administration Supervisor. If you wish to make a written complaint, please ask for the appropriate form from Reception or download one from our website. We will acknowledge all

complaints within 48 hours and our aim is to have responded in full within 28 days. Clinical complaints will be handled by one of the GP Partners and will be the subject of a Significant Event review involving the entire clinical team, the focus of which is to understand what went wrong and see what lessons can be learned for the future.

A petition of 489 signatures in connection with Barlow Road playing field was submitted to AVDC. Thank you. After confirming money is the bottom line, AVDC have decided against a potential rental agreement with the Parish Council on the land. They are expecting bids substantially in excess of £500,000, with a guide plan for eight new 3 bedroom houses. MP David Lidington is encouraging AVDC to try and meet the community’s needs with a play area in a suitable alternative place, but I believe they will struggle to find one suitable for all on the Honeydene Estate. The RAF have agreed to remove signs stating the Tedder Road park is for RAF use only, so the public can use those facilities, due for refurbishing in the next 6 months. I have asked ADVC if they are going to take this community asset out of Wendover, and simply run with the money or will they put something back? This area of Wendover lacks play facilities; an estate housing so many children should have its own play area, and 8 new houses will only add to the number of children with nowhere to play. AVDC say they will look into alternative sights. The only thing we can do as a community now is wait for planning to be submitted and then those in the surrounding area who have good grounds to oppose the plan need to do so in writing. They could also attend the Wendover Parish Council planning committee meeting and the development control or strategic development control committee meetings when the plans are due to be discussed. Details of agendas can be found on the Wendover Parish Council and Aylesbury Vale District Council's websites.

Film night result IRGH – Wendover Fundraising group The Wendover Fundraising group for Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care had its first fundraising activity on Friday 11 January 2013 – a film night showing two British Comedy films – “The Plank” with Eric Sykes and “Saving Grace” starring Brenda Blethyn. Geoffrey Palmer, a patron of Iain Rennie Hospice, came to open this new fund raising venture and to wish everyone good luck and encourage the group. There was hardly a seat left unsold and everyone had a great evening with chuckles and belly laughs. Over £600 was raised on the night. Watch out for the next film show, probably in March.

Volunteer Workout Employer Supported Volunteering enables employees to donate their time, energy and skills to support charitable causes and to be involved in giving back to their community. Are you a community or voluntary group in Buckinghamshire? Your organisation could benefit from a much needed makeover or other practical task like gardening or painting work, pond clearing, fence repair or could your organisation use skills in IT, HR or marketing? If the answer is “YES” then VOLUNTEER WORKOUT can help you. We have companies who are ready to volunteer for such projects. Help us to help you......let us know what projects you need help with and we will arrange a volunteering day to complete it. A few minutes of your time is all that is required to answer 3 questions and get your project underway. Click here to get started: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CharityProjects

Our dearly departed In late 2012 Wendover lost two pillars of the community, first Tony Tyson then Vic Fletcher. Wendover News wishes to acknowledge their work properly so there are tributes with photos on the new website www.wendovernews.co.uk and there will be words in print in the March edition. Thank you to the contributors for their efforts.

Scouting this Summer With the Christmas break over, the thoughts turn to summer activities and camp planning. As spring approaches all the canoes, kayaks, sailing boats, bikes and camping equipment will undergo the new season checks and repairs in preparation for what we hope will be a slightly drier one than last year.

We have a team in place that delivers all these fantastic activities to the young people but we are always looking for more people to help on occasions. If you have skills (or qualifications) in canoeing, kayaking, sailing or mountain biking and are willing to offer a little time over the summer then we would like to hear from you. We are not expecting a weekly or year round commitment, just the occasional help would be great.

If you are interested in finding out more about helping then please contact us at [email protected] or phone Andrew Inkley (Scout Leader) on 01296 58066. A Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check will need to be carried out.

Wildlife on the Wendover Arm I am writing in support of the comments raised in the December edition of the Wendover News regarding the ‘Future of Wildlife in the Wendover Arm'. Having moved to Wendover two years ago I was looking forward to walks along the Wendover Arm and excited by the prospect of seeing the rare white claw crayfish and array of chalk stream flora within. It came as a shock to discover someone tipping concrete in! I'd query whether a skilled ecologist was consulted as they would have surely pointed out the salient facts of what ecological heritage the Arm holds and the catastrophic consequences of this scheme; not to mention it contravening European Law. Restoration is a strange term for what is vandalism of our natural heritage.

Taxis Speeding in Wendover I wish to make a complaint regarding Taxis speeding to and from the Clock Tower on New Year’s Eve. They were going at speeds ranging from 60 to 90mph and it was obvious they were trying to capitalise on business for the night. Whilst I understand they are in competition with one another, it will not be long before there is a serious accident. Yet again, where were the Police speed control vans?

Dobbins Lane weekend parking? Am I alone in wondering why £70 parking tickets are being dished out in Dobbins Lane between 10 and 11am at the weekends? The received wisdom is this restriction applies during the week to deter commuter parking. Many signs indicate this to be the case — except the sign outside the back entrance to No2/Le Bistro which shows a 7-day restriction. Hence my (and others) getting a Penalty Charge Notice on Saturday 5 January. The next sign down the single yellow line parking area outside Abbeyfield shows a Mon-Fri 10-11am restriction but nobody can point to where this hallowed haven starts or finishes. I ask you — such confusion. The local traders, charity and farmers market people will be ever so

You Write pleased that no parking is available on a Saturday and shoppers deterred from visiting during this time. No bathing in the Olympic Legacy in Wendover It is disappointing not to be able to access the Wendover Pool. The John Colet School (JCS) closed the pool on 12 October because in June the gas boilers heating the pool water had ceased working, not a problem in the summer, but now too cold to swim in. Therefore, numerous clubs, the several hundred members and all schools that use it are now unable to swim locally just when they should be ‘bathing’ in the Olympic Legacy. The WSA and its members generate a revenue close on £1,000 a month, most of which contributes to the pool’s upkeep and maintenance. There is a distinct lack of detail as to what is being done. Bucks County Council claims to have resolved any gas supply problems and have provided JCS with 2 quoted schemes for replacing the water heating and WSA are ready with financial assistance. So why are we waiting?

A Smith

The school is reviewing the complex situation at the pool which has arisen due to the boiler failure and other facility issues. This will be discussed at a forthcoming Governors' meeting. The Governors' discussion will also take into account the likelihood of continuing reductions of government funding for schools.

Local Faces :

Robert Duggan was brought up in Redhill in Surrey. Going to boarding school he was educated in Bideford and went to Oxford Poly (now Oxford Brookes) to study for an external London University degree in Mathematics and Physics. Robert entered the NHS as one of the first of two graduate trainees in Supply and Procurement Management. Working in Oxford was an attraction as the future Mrs D was completing her studies there. Robert became an integral part of the equipping team for the John Radcliffe Hospital which opened in 1977/8. In 1975, Robert and Alison married and they lived in Oxford until Robert’s job took him to Reading for different health projects there. In 1981 Thomas was born and shortly afterwards Robert’s work took him to the new Milton Keynes Hospital and the new spinal Unit at Stoke Mandeville hospital meeting . . . In 1982 Robert and Alison moved to Wendover and there began the love affair with this area of outstanding natural beauty. In 1984, a second son, Christopher, was born. To make ends meet, Robert, Alison and their next door neighbour set up ROALDI – a toy making business. On weekday evenings Robert would make the wooden toys. Alison and Di would paint and stitch, and at weekends they would go off to craft fairs selling their wares whilst Robert entertained the two growing lads.

At around this time Robert developed a software system which became the NHS standard for Project equipping. In 1989, Robert left the NHS to set up his own business. However due to the untimely death of his business partner, he returned to the NHS to set up a fee earning unit for the ‘Margaret Thatcher’ initiated internal market in the NHS. In 1998, Robert set up Domino Equipping Solutions, a national business providing procurement consultancy services to the Public sector. Robert loves to be involved with local life. He is chair of Wendover Parish Council and is also a member of the Wendover Society. Both organisations need younger members and Robert is keen to get more youngsters (under 50) involved. He is involved one way or another with anti HS2 or mitigation issues. Together with Colin Riley and others, Robert is part of the inaugural Wendover IRGH Fundraising group. He is a Governor of the South Central Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust and is keen to carry on with connections with the NHS albeit in a more voluntary capacity. With a first grandchild on the way Robert hopes to wind down his business activities and concentrate on his other more leisurely interests such as vegetable gardening, development of sustainable ideas, wood turning and Wendover.

Alison was born in Khartoum in the Sudan, and returned with her parents to the UK at the age of 18 months. The family settled in Edinburgh, eventually returning to the south of England in 1965, moving to Hampton, Middlesex where Alison went to school and then to Oxford Poly to complete a degree in Social Studies. Towards the end of her first term Alison met Robert when they were performing in a production of Camino Real. Alison was “a woman of the night” and Robert was a “soldier and undertaker”! Their acting careers never progressed, but their relationship did!

Alison then worked for two years as a trainee social worker based in Beaconsf ie ld and Slough. Her experiences in this field were varied, and taught her many things which have been pertinent in her subsequent life. At this point Alison decided that she wanted to work with children – not possible in those days as a social worker, and so went to Bulmershe college in Reading to train to be a teacher and taught in two schools in Reading before Thomas’s arrival.

The decision to settle in Wendover, promoted by Robert’s new job, was led by the fact that the village appeared

friendly, had good amenities and facilities, was on the right side of Aylesbury for access to both sets of parents; her mother who settled in Wendover in 1993 remembers visiting Wendover as a child with cousins from Luton, and having tea in a tea shop.

In time, Alison took the boys to the thriving Mother and Toddler group at the Memorial Hall and started making friends with other Wendover mothers. This led onto many things……she became Secretary of the Mother and Toddler group, co-ordinating the rota of helpers. She also wrote to Mrs Halfacre, the then headteacher of John

Hampden First School, offering help as a volunteer, having moved into another LEA. Starting off hearing readers on a weekly basis, which led on to occasional then regular supply work, taking the “rising 5s”, Alison is now a permanent member of staff, currently working 4 days a week. Many of the children who have been to the John Hampden School may well have been taught by Mrs Duggan, and now, scarily for her, she is teaching the children of her sons’ contemporaries!

Through links with the school, Alison has brought Morris and Maypole Dancing to Wendover Carnival, the Manor Waste and most recently to Wendover Celebrates. She was part of the working party for Wendover Ce leb ra tes , co -o rgan is ing the successful logo competition, and is currently on the Committee for Wendover Community Library. In 2006 Alison took part in a 20 mile sponsored walk for Breast Cancer, and then in the IRHH midnight walk.

In her spare time Alison enjoys gardening, reading, and visiting places of interest (especially New Zealand!) but becoming a grandmother as well as a mother-in-law again in 2013 means she has an exciting time ahead!

View from the Chair The New Year has started in style with a wonderful effort from those who helped clear up the glass and rubbish on New Year’s day. Hopefully either via this back page or via my Social networking messages those of you who contributed to that effort have received my message of thanks. It means a lot more to those of us on the Parish Council than just clearing up after having a good time, it reflects the community spirit that abounds in Wendover. With winter really upon us may I take this opportunity to thank the Council’s Groundsmen for their conscientious efforts to keep the Manor Waste, our pavements and the general areas clear. Slippery pavements are a hazard where we must all take care and the footpaths and recreation grounds are also frozen hard creating another potential danger especially for children. Please be aware of the notices around Hampden Pond. There was a local tragedy there on 9 January 1868 when seven boys from the Village School (next door to the Clock Tower) were playing on the ice and fell through, two were saved and five perished. We now look forward to the challenges of 2013, which I’m sure will be many and interesting. Above all I hope we can build on that collective spirit established over the past year and which manifested itself on New Year’s day.

Robert Duggan, Chair to WPC

Clock Tower Restoration We have now received planning permission from Aylesbury Vale for the necessary restoration work required to the Clock Tower. Wendover Celebrates has granted our request for a donation and we have received £500. The total of the Fund presently stands at £1,900.

Clock Tower Challenge As a part of the ongoing fundraising for the Clock Tower restoration fund the Parish Council and the Wendover Society, are organising a quiz night 'The Clock Tower Challenge.....time for a quiz!' on Friday 8 March,

7.30pm at

the Memorial Hall. Teams of 8 - individuals who are not in a team can join in and make up teams on the night. £12 a head to include a fish and chip supper, licensed bar and raffle. Please register and pay in advance at the Clock Tower. All profits to the Clock Tower Fund.

RAF Halton Freedom of the Vale Parade This is to give advanced notice that a parade in Wendover is being planned for Friday 22 March to mark the Freedom of Entry that has been awarded to RAF Halton by Aylesbury Vale District Council. This is an event that has been much anticipated in recognition of the close bond between Wendover and RAF Halton. The High Street will be closed to traffic on the day for a number of hours, with disruption to normal business, but the Parish Council hopes that there will be understanding and an excellent turnout of spectators to observe the ceremony of RAF Halton marching through Wendover with bayonets fixed and the Queen’s colour flying. More extensive details will be released over the next few weeks.

Local Area Forum Local Area Forums (LAFs) provide the opportunity to discuss local services provided in the area by Bucks County Council. Wendover LAF serves the parishes of Wendover, Halton, Aston Clinton, Buckland, Drayton Beauchamp and Weston Turville enabling important local issues to be discussed by both elected representatives and any members of the public who wish to attend. It is regularly attended by Cllrs Tom Walsh and Stephen Worth, as well as Cllr Marion Clayton who ably wears two hats being both a Parish and County Counc i l lor .
