PRESIDENT’S LETTER

JANUARY

San Francisco – The City by the Bay! Beautiful & stately it stands as a metropolis that lives, breathes and expresses its unique personality to the world. SF is a fantastic place surrounded by sparkling bay and majestic sea: a metropolis that superimposed an urban grid right over the tops of its hills and valleys as if it were the flat expanse of the LA basin. It is, and will continue to be a hub for culture and creativity in the Bay Area.

…But San Francisco has a cousin down the peninsula: the Santa Clara Valley, that continues to expand and grow and attract a life, culture and energy of its own. The business epicenter of northern California has shifted from the Financial District to Sand Hill Road and from the docks of Fort Mason to the disc drives of Silicon Valley.

Along with this shift in business comes a shift in population. A few years back San Jose passed San Francisco as the 10th largest city in the USA & 3rd largest city in California (behind LA & San Diego). In a new era of sustainability and gasoline prices approaching $5/gal, more people

COLLABORATION KEY TO SUCCESS

Over the last four years, Noel Cross+Architects has designed several projects that have required the use of natural stone veneer. Noel Cross contacted Steve Bosco of Graniterock to help with the task of selecting just the right stone. Noel and Steve have met at the Graniterock Design Center in Cupertino on many occasions to try and find the perfect color, cut and samples for Noel’s numerous projects. “The reason I keep using Graniterock is their services and knowledge about natural stone is second to none, and their selection is tremendous. Whatever my needs are, Graniterock has been there to support my projects,” says Mr. Cross. Mr. Bosco from Graniterock agrees, “Graniterock built our Design Center for the exact purpose for which architects like Noel Cross use it. We try and make the architect’s job as easy as possible. If we can assist in the selection of stone for projects and free up the architect’s time to focus on other important aspects of the project, we feel the Design Center has served its purpose.”

“There are many options at the architect’s disposal when choosing natural stone or any other product and service that our corporate sponsors offer. I think it is important that AIASCV Chapter members support all of our great corporate sponsors whenever the opportunity avails

AIASCV’S NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

JANUARY

When I listed the things I like to do most and those that my experience is well suited for, the AIA executive director job description matched up very nicely for me. For example, I‘ve worked in both the business and the non-profit world, as well as for a number of

membership organizations*. I received a BA degree in art and art history from Santa Clara University, and have a strong appreciation for architecture. I’ve even consulted on projects involving city planning commissions and land development**. And I have extensive experience in organizing and managing different types of events, working with volunteers, and dealing with public policy issues at the federal, state and local levels. I’m almost a native of Santa Clara Valley, having lived in the San Jose area for close to 40 years. My husband is a sole practitioner with an emphasis on real estate and many ties to local building,

development and construction companies. So by osmosis I’m familiar with quite a few AIA member organizations.

The other thing that drew me to AIA was the people I met. Everyone was enthusiastic, committed and engaged in being a part of AIA. That said a lot to me. And in just the short time I’ve been on the job, I’ve met even more people exuding the same commitment and enthusiasm. I’m excited to be part of the team!

are choosing to live, work and play within a smaller circumference. This is building up the demand for ‘smart growth’ communities, and the South Bay is home to quite a few of them. Looking ahead to Santa Clara Valley’s future is both exciting and dizzying.

We could have 3 brand new sports stadiums built in the next 5 years with 49ers football, Earthquakes soccer and Athletics baseball venues. These new projects attract hotels, restaurants and retail. Pro sports franchises put their host cities on a world stage as media covers ALL THE ACTION, LIVE!

Our business and social lives continue to be shaped by products conceived and born in our valley. Huge new campuses are being designed by world class architects for Apple Computer in Cupertino, Facebook in Menlo Park and Google in Mountain View. Apple’s Net Zero Energy “Spaceship” design by Foster + Partners of London will house up to 15,000 employees in a glazed donut ring set in a serene orchard. Google

is creating a “LEED Platinum Campus” that not only provides office space for 2,500 to 3,000 employees, but will include housing, retail and entertainment to offer its workforce a home and activities close by.

Transportation is also getting a huge makeover as BART presses south into Santa Clara County with a station in Milpitas (Great Mall), 3 stations in San Jose (Berryessa Swap Meet site, Five Wounds neighborhood and Downtown SJ) and Santa Clara (FMC site near Santa Clara University). California High Speed Rail is in the planning stages to provide 2 hour and 7 minute rail service between San Jose’s Diridon Station and LA’s Union Station.

Besides all this, Silicon Valley is attracting major auto makers like Tesla, Ford and GM with design and research facilities to connect them to the technologies that drive the future of transportation. The Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce has been working with the City of San Jose on ideas for a port in Alviso to allow for ferry service to once

again connect Oakland and San Francisco with the South Bay. This plan could also include a marina with housing and hospitality uses, a Fisherman’s Wharf with restaurants, and recreational activities amidst the restored saltwater marshlands.

Alviso is linked to downtown San Jose by the Guadalupe River which plays host to pedestrian and bike trails and could even bring water taxi service from the Ferry Terminal to downtown (á la San Antonio’s Riverwalk). The Guadalupe River Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States with opportunity to attract thousands for nature, recreation and sports activities.

This is OUR VALLEY! These projects are in our neighborhoods and districts. As architects and designers in this thriving expanse of humanity and creativity, we need to plug in and get involved in some of these activities. Many of these organizations and projects are searching for visionary individuals to provide leadership for the process of growth and development. I encourage each of you to get involved to whatever degree you can commit.

Will there be enough architects, construction managers and engineers to fill the building industry's needs ten years from now?   The ACE Mentor Program is working hard to make sure there are.  The program's mission is to engage, excite and enlighten high school students to the career options in the building industry through team mentoring with students in weekly to bi-weekly after school meetings.     Volunteer mentors from the architecture, construction and engineering fields are needed to help give students insight into these fields through fun and interactive activities, presentations and field trips.  Mentoring is accomplished in teams, giving students wonderful insight to the teamwork needed between all disciplines   on a project   and provides mentors a great opportunity to network and bond with fellow professionals.  Volunteers can join the mentor team, become guest speakers or provide support in other ways.

Our San Jose team is in need of more volunteers in every discipline, but most specifically architecture.   Over 70% of student applicants list an interest in architecture, yet we have the least amount of mentors from the architectural field.  Sign up today and find out how you can help make a difference!

To learn more, go to www.acementor.org/574 or email San Jose/Peninsula Regional Coordinator Cynthia Munoz at [email protected].

Mr. Sabin of Newberg, Ore., died July 5 at 79. He graduated from Stanford University in 1954 with his degree in architecture. He was a member of Theta Xi and the Stanford Daily staff and participated in NROTC.

Prior to establishing his own practice in 1967 in Palo Alto, he worked for Ernest J. Kump. During his distinguished career he served as president of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.   He was also an instructor in architecture at West Valley College for 20 years. He enjoyed coaching and refereeing youth sports in Palo Alto and was a member of Rotary International.   He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children, Peter Jr., Kristin Cabot, Cynthia Eades and Robert; his stepchildren, Erik and Robert Landsness; eight grandchildren: and a sister. (reprinted from the Stanford Alumni Magazine).
