April 8th will be my 4th year anniversary with the Chamber. After attending my first Gala almost 10 months after my start date, I realized that while the Gala was a lot of fun and raised money for the Chamber function, the “party” itself really wasn't aligned with the Chamber’s core values or mission statement. For those that have gotten to know me in the last 4 years, I truly believe everything the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce does, should be about Economic Development. Whether we are helping a specific business grow through networking and advertising, or growing the greater business community through advocacy or promotion, it should all be about economic development. After my first Gala, I worked with the Board of Directors and Gala committee to implement a “Excellence in Business Awards” aspect. One way to promote the area, is to promote businesses for their successes, and help them spread their story. The first year of awards was a little difficult, but we had applicants for every category, and
were able to blend the award portion into the fun and nostalgia of the annual Gala. Last year, the second year of awards, saw huge growth. We streamlined the award categories and application which led to triple the amount of applicants in every category. 2012 appears to again show growth in the amount of award applicants. Still a couple hours to go and we have over 35 applications for the 8 awards. The quality of award applicants is what surprises me most. I know we have great companies in our midst, but I’m always amazed by what they accomplish within their businesses and the local community. I encourage you to join me at this year’s Gala on February 24th to hear about the amazing stories these companies have and to celebrate all of our successes. The Gala committee has been working extremely hard, and have taken input from last years Gala, made changes, added creativity and are pouring out what appears will be an excellent night of fun, food, and flappers…
