Back during the cold spell in the beginning of January, I had an experience that combined the worst of circumstances and the best of circumstances all within the timeframe of an hour. My six year old daughter was supposed to stay after school in the extended day program until being picked up at 5:30. Due to an error at school, she was put on the bus at 4:00 and arrived at our home at 4:30. My wife is usually home and meets her at the stop right in front of our house. When my wife did not meet the bus, the driver paused for a minute to make sure my daughter made it into the house OK. The temperature at the time was approximately zero degrees. When no one came to the door, the bus driver waved her back to the bus and asked if she knew a neighbor that might be home. Because we had discussed this with her previously, my daughter knew what to do and was brought to a neighbor a few doors down. Needless to say, when my wife got the call from the neighbor that Tess was there, she was a little freaked out but everything was OK.

This experience highlights what can happen in your business world as well. Are you prepared for the unexpected? Do you have a “plan b” in place for when something happens you were not expecting. You can always blame the government or someone else (the teacher) when something doesn’t go as planned. But also realize the government or someone else (the bus driver and the neighbor) may be the unexpected hero. Do you have a plan in place to keep your business func-tioning in a snowstorm, a power outage or an H1N1 outbreak? Are your employees mobile and able to continue to do work from home or an alternate office if the situation requires it? Do you put all you eggs in one basket with a major supplier or a major customer? What happens if they go away? Prepare for the unexpected to keep your business functioning as normal as possible when something happens to change your circumstances. And do me a favor, talk to your kids and have a plan in place to deal with the unexpected like the one I described above.

Merrick, Inc., is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable corporation licensed by the Department of Human Services as a Day Training and Habilitation (DT&H) provider. Merrick, Inc., is dedicated to serving adults with developmental disabilities by offering a full array of services that offer meaningful vocational options, enhance personal skills, empower choice making abilities, and expand participation in the community. Most of the clients in our program have a primary diagnosis of mental retardation (approximately 48%, 25%, 19%, and 8% in the mild, moderate, severe, and profound range of retardation respectively). A number of the clients in our program are non-ambulatory, sight impaired/blind, hearing impaired/deaf, do not communicate verbally, or have special dietary concerns (e.g. G-Tubes, dietary restrictions, modified diets, etc.). In addition, many clients have secondary diagnoses that include autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, mental illness, seizure disorders, and other related conditions. Transportation services to and from the program can usually be arranged through our transportation services department. In addition, Merrick, Inc., contracts with the Phoenix Corporation for nursing and speech services and offers a variety of non-vocational and habilitative services. We also have a full-time Occupational Therapist on staff.

Twin Cities North, Grow Minnesota! Poised for Economic Recovery

Minnesota can expect significant new investment as businesses emerge from the recession, according to the annual findings of the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce and the Grow Minnesota! network. But it will not be automatic as business owners across the state cite crucial items that must be addressed by policy-makers.

“Holding the line on taxes is key to their decision to stay and grow in Minnesota,” said Bill Blazar, senior vice president of public affairs and business development at the Minnesota Chamber. “Other cost factors are also cause for immediate concern. Electricity rates in many parts of the state are becoming less competitive, and the environmental permitting process continues to be lengthy and costly for too many Minnesota businesses.”

Grow Minnesota! is completing its sixth year as the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce’s private-sector job retention and creation program. It is conducted in partnership with 50 local chambers of commerce and organizations, including the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce. Volunteers statewide conducted one-on-one conversations with owners or top-level managers of nearly 900 companies this past year.

Especially noteworthy was the distribution of $5.5 million in low-interest loans and grants to 90 small businesses in 62 communities, thanks to a generous grant from the Pohlad Family Foundation. The loans and grants are designed to help these businesses survive the recession and be prepared to grow as it ends. “Our local Grow Minnesota! program has successfully operated for more than five years,” said Tim Roche, president of the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce. “More than a hundred volunteer business leaders have been engaged in the face-to-face business retention visits. The strengthening of business relationships and knowledge gained and shared during these visits have been invaluable.”

Grow Minnesota! started with the goal of thanking businesses for investing in Minnesota and employing Minnesotans. Every Grow Minnesota! business retention visit also includes an offer of assistance to the company to help it be more successful in Minnesota. Businesses also are asked what is needed in public policy to assure they will stay and grow in the state. With more than 4,000 business retention visits completed in six years, it became apparent that the 50 local chamber partners and their volunteers are connecting only with a fraction of Minnesota’s more than 100,000 businesses.

That reality spawned the creation of BusinessConnection, an electronic business assistance and referral network launched in conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. The service is free to all companies and is intended to be a single entry point to help businesses connect with private and public resources to solve everyday business problems. It can be accessed online at www.mnbizconnect.com or by calling (888) MINN-BIZ (646-6249).

Blazar said he expects the economic recovery to bring more exporting and more orders – but not necessarily more jobs. “Creating more businesses will be key to getting Minnesotans back to work,” Blazar added. Jobs shed during the recession have, to a significant extent, been permanently replaced by changes in processes, procedures and even some new equipment.

“Minnesota’s economic recovery has begun and will continue through the coming year,” Blazar said. “But the message is clear. There is a new reality coming for businesses across our state, and now is the time for everyone – businesses as well as policy-makers – to understand the risks and mine the new opportunities. A big part of that is to create more businesses and have them be successful.”

U.S. Chamber Pledges to Work with New Leadership at U.S. Agency for International Development Business Welcomes Emphasis on Innovative Development Strategies

WASHINGTON, D.C.–-The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its affiliate, the Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC), welcomed the recent swearing in of Dr. Rajiv Shah as Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“We welcome a knowledgeable, innovative, and capable leader like Dr. Shah to lead the agency,” said Myron Brilliant, senior vice president for International Affairs at the U.S. Chamber. “His leadership at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture makes him an excellent choice to serve as one the nation’s leading international economic advisers.” “USAID is truly a leader amongst international development agencies in establishing partnerships with the private sector.” Brilliant said. “The Chamber looks forward to working with Dr. Shah and his team to help advance the role of the private sector in international economic development.” “We are very pleased about the appointment of Dr. Shah to lead this important agency,” added Stephen Jordan, senior vice president and executive director of BCLC. “Businesses play a large role in delivering foreign assistance, but they need strategic partners too. We are committed to working with USAID to devise innovative ways to advance emerging market development.” BCLC, a 501(c) 3 affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is a resource and voice for the social and philanthropic interests of business. Its mission is to advance the positive role of business in society.

U.S. SUPREME COURT EASES RESTRICTIONS ON CORPORATE POLITICAL COMMUNICATION

A landmark 5-4 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 21 has seemingly overturned decades of campaign finance law. “Like everyone else, we are just beginning to study the court’s ruling, and we don’t yet fully understand what the Implications are for Minnesota,” said Mike Franklin, elections policy director for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. “However, if the initial news reports are accurate and the opinion confirms that corporate speech is protected by the First Amendment, this is a very welcome opinion.” Franklin said. “Minnesota businesses are regulated by legislation and affected by legislators’ decisions; to forbid businesses from participating in the discussion has always been unfair.” The opinion, authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy, states in part that “The Government may regulate corporate political speech through disclaimer and disclosure requirements, but it may not suppress that speech altogether.” This ruling appears to level the playing field among corporations and other associations made up of individuals, like labor unions, Franklin noted. The Minnesota Chamber has long had a policy on easing Minnesota’s so-called “corporate ban.” “One of the frustrations we’ve had with Minnesota’s corporate ban is the vast amount of ‘gray area’ it creates,” he said. “Businesses and business associations like chambers of commerce are forced into second-guessing every statement they make for fear that it might be construed as ‘political.’ “Hopefully, all parties can now participate in the discussion of what Minnesota’s priorities in the context of elections should be without fear of reprisal."
