Today, Dr. Galloway continues a sermon series on the last week in the life of Jesus from the Gospel of Mark. This series of sermons will lead into the season of Lent. You are encouraged to read prayerfully Mark 11 – 16 as we walk with Jesus in Jerusalem.

hymn Come to Me, All Pilgrims Thirsty draws its inspiration from John 4:7-30 which relates Jesus’ encounter at Jacob’s well with the Samaritan woman, offering her the water of eternal life. Jesus is the “ever flowing fountain” that satisfies our thirst, offers us rest and refreshment as well as pardon for our sins. It was penned by Benedictine Sister Delores Dufner, one of the best-known hymn writers in the church today. She is currently liturgy director for St. Benedict Monastery in St. Joseph, Minnesota.

hymn #462Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies first appeared in 1740 in Hymns and Sacred Poems. This Epiphany hymn, written by Charles Wesley, is filled with images of light portraying Christ as the Messiah coming into a world of darkness. This radiant presence transforms us as it “pierces the gloom of sin” and cheers our eyes, warms our hearts. This compact three-verse hymn is tightly written in contrast to some of Wesley’s hymns. For example, O For a Thousand Tongues originally spanned 18 stanzas. Wesley, the great English revivalist along with his brother John, wrote over 6500 hymns of which 11 appear in our hymnal.

Call to Confession (from Psalm 130)

Leader: Out of the depths we cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear our voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of our supplications! People: if you, o Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered.

Silent Confession

Leader: We wait for the Lord, our souls wait, and in God’s word we hope; our souls wait for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. People: Hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with God is great power to redeem. The Lord will redeem us from all our iniquities.

Assurance of Pardon

* Gloria Patri (Hymnal #579)

* Passing of the PeaceLeader: The peace of Christ be with you.People: And also with you.

S u n d A y M o r n i n G W o r S H i P - 9 : 3 0 & 1 1 A M

ThE LORd’s PRAyEROur Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

cOLOssIAns 1:15-20Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

dOxOLOGyPraise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

hymn #391Take My Life is a “catalog” hymn that lists aspects of our lives and offers them in Christ’s service. Frances Havergal’s text is based upon Romans 12:1: I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Offered in service to God and neighbor are “life, moments, hands, feet, voice, lips, silver and gold, intellect, will, heart, love and self.”
