February 19, 2016 Dear Parents, I am so excited to announce that our students and teachers are winners of the Newsela reading contest. Newsela was introduced to me by Mrs. Alisa Yasurek and immediately I knew it would be a great literacy program, achieving our goals of meeting each student where they are in the area of reading competence. Students read articles of interest each week and assessments are given for comprehension. The program adjusts the articles to each student’s reading level ensuring students learn vocabulary, comprehend, and simply enjoy reading perhaps for the first time in their school trajectory. Recently Newsela challenged schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg to read articles for a grand prize to be awarded. We were notified yesterday that South Charlotte is the Grand Prize Winner! We will receive a free subscription to Newsela for next school year ($6000 value) and a visit by Charlotte Hornets Sixth Man, Jeremy Lin. Lin graduated from Harvard in 2010 and has played in the NBA for six years. He was not recruited out of high school nor drafted by the NBA; however, his hard work and focus, not to mention his intellect has gained him recognition as a valuable NBA player (we are thankful he was not traded recently). His recognition is so widespread he could win the coveted NBA sixth man award this year. The details of Lin’s visit are not complete, but we will keep you posted. I would like to thank all of the teachers and staff for encouraging students to read. It is nice to win the contest, but more importantly, our students are learning because of the amount of reading opportunities. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools is going through a district accreditation process this year. School administrators throughout the country will visit schools and meet with staff members March 14-17. All schools have participated in the overall process. We are not sure if we will be chosen as a school that will be visited, but if we are, I look forward to the group seeing your students in classrooms doing great things led by great teachers. Congratulations to Katherine Balas for wining SCMS’s talent show last evening. The talent was amazing this year and I know the judges had a very difficult time deciding the winners. SCMS students are so talented. Thank you parents for allowing your students to participate in such events. All proceeds benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation and was sponsored by Student Council, led by Mrs. Glenn and Mrs. Rogers. Great job all! We just received word that our SCMS Orchestra received a superior rating at the Guilford County Schools Orchestra Festival in Greensboro. Congratulations to our talented musicians for making us proud once again! Thank you for allowing us to serve your students each day. Regards, Lisa Bailes, Principal

Attention all 7th Graders!

Do you have what it takes to represent South Charlotte Middle as a member of the National Junior Honor Society?

Submit your application for consideration today!

Mrs. Yasurek, the NJHS faculty advisor, is currently accepting applications for South Charlotte’s

2016-2017 Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Students who are interested in membership will need to complete the application form in its entirety and submit it for

consideration to Mrs. Yasurek in room 312 by the April 15th due date. Copies of the application form are available on the South Charlotte website. The National Junior Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization which recognizes outstanding Middle School students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.

The standards for selection are established by the National Junior Honor Society of the United States and by the South Charlotte Middle School NJHS by-laws. As stated

in the National Junior Honor Society Handbook, “Selection to the National Junior Honor Society is a privilege and not a right. Students do not apply for membership in the National Junior Honor Society; instead, they provide information to be used by

the local selection committee to support their candidacy for membership.”

Materials submitted by the candidates will be reviewed by the NJHS faculty panel. Candidates will be notified of their status by early May.

If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Yasurek at [email protected] .

MS. WRIGHT

ATTENDANCE

SECRETARY

I’m Maryanne Wright, the new attendance secretary at South Charlotte Middle School. I started working here in December 2015 after a two-year hiatus (also referred to as “retirement”) from my previous 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). I was hired as a mail processing clerk in the Bronx, NY, and then promoted to a Customer Service Supervisor position after three years.

In 2003 my husband and I transferred to Charlotte, NC. When he was promoted in 2007, we moved to Fairfax, VA. Fortunately, I was able to transfer there as the USPS Communications Coordinator for the Northern Virginia District. Two years later my husband was promoted (again!) to a high-level position at the Homeland Security Agency in Washington, DC. Not to be outdone, I applied for the position of writer/editor in Corporate Communications at USPS Headquarters, also in our nation’s capital, and I got it! Working at HQ afforded me an opportunity to interact with postal employees from all across the country. What an amazing experience! In 2013 we both retired and moved back to beautiful North Carolina.

On a personal note, I have four children and 13 grandchildren. My son is a lawyer, two of my daughters are teachers, and one daughter is a job coach for mentally and physically disabled individuals. I am so proud of them and their accomplishments. I also am thrilled that I can see my daughter Alisa (Mrs. Yasurek) every day I come to work at SCMS.

I love writing, reading, taking photographs, and decorating. I love being with my husband, children and grandchildren and, perhaps most of all, laughing and making others smile.

My goal is to write a novel that will inspire others to persevere and never, ever give up—even when things seem hopeless. Each one of us has a story; a story that just might be the impetus someone needs to change their life. Perhaps my next journey will be life as a famous author!
