Shabbat Mevorchim Parashat Shekalim Mishpatim February 13th, 2010 29 Shevat 5770 Kiddush This Shabbat is sponsored by The Shul Rabbi’s Corner A few weeks ago I was very surprised to read that an es- timated one in five Americans have some sort of disability and almost one million Jews have to overcome some barrier to be included in Jewish life. I am not sure what the num- bers would be like in our own shul or community but I am 100% sure that they are higher than we think. There are peo- ple with visible disabilities and those with hidden disabilities that we, as onlookers, would never even know about. Each form of disability has its own respective challenges. We, as a community, must be there to support each other and ensure that we make everyone feel included in our shul. This goes for people of all religious backgrounds and affiliations, people of both genders, people of all shapes and sizes, people of different opinions, and all people who live with physical or mental disabilities. We are all nice people and have good intentions but we are not always as sensitive as we could be; we each have more to learn, myself in- cluded. We have designated this coming Shabbat of February 13th as “Inclusion Shabbat” in our shul. The purpose of this Shabbat is to raise awareness about disabilities and develop a sensitivity for what it means for those who live with dis- abilities. The goal is, of course, to learn how to make those who do have disabilities feel more included in our shul and in the larger community. The Orthodox Union, through its YACHAD division has been addressing these issues so beautifully for 25 years. We must take their lead and we will start this shabbos. Please take the time to read the important article on page 3 of the bulletin . If you can, please do so with your children maybe even at the Shabbat table. I will be speaking on shabbos morning AT THE END OF DAVENING (babysitting will be extended for kids downstairs to allow for all adults to be present) followed by a brief pres- entation by our very own Stephen Mendelsohn . In the afternoon we will have the honor of hearing from a guest speaker, Jeremy Lichtman , who is a student at YU who lives with Tourette's Syndrome and works for Yachad.
