Group Ten Metals Exploratory Drilling Plan of Operations ApprovedRed Lodge, MT – The Custer Gallatin National Forest recently decided to approve the Group Ten Metals, Stillwater West Phase Two Plan of Operations for Mineral Exploration in the Chrome and Iron Mountain areas in both Stillwater and Sweet Grass Counties. The Decision authorizes Group Ten Metals to conduct exploratory drilling and reclamation at thirty-five drill sites over the course of seven operational seasons (2020-2026).

The Chrome and Iron Mountain areas are located on the East Boulder Plateau about 10 miles west of Nye, Montana. All exploratory drilling will occur on National Forest System lands with six drill sites located on the Beartooth Ranger District and twenty-nine drill sites on the Yellowstone Ranger District. Group Ten Metals will be authorized to operate between July 15 and October 1 annually starting in 2020. Group Ten will complete all project activities, including final reclamation by October 1, 2026.

“The Custer Gallatin National Forest worked with Group Ten Metals, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and US Fish and Wildlife Service to ensure that this mineral exploration project is properly planned and implemented” said Beartooth District Ranger Ken Coffin. “Oversite of Stillwater Complex minerals management activities is ongoing and important work on National Forest lands.”

The Plan of Operations and decision includes design and mitigation measures to reduce environmental effects. Group Ten will use laydown areas, water drafting sites and helicopter landing zones on National Forest System lands. Vehicles will use Picket Pin Road (FS Road #2140) to access the project area, including up to three track- mounted or portable drill rigs. Helicopters will fly project personnel and supplies from locations on private lands to landing zones in the project area. The drill rigs will likely operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during exploration activities.

The Environmental Assessment, Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact documents are available on-line at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=55033. These documents are also available for review at the Beartooth Ranger District office in Red Lodge, Montana.

For additional information please contact Dan Seifert, Assistant Forest Geologist, Beartooth Ranger District, Custer Gallatin NF, 6811 Highway 212, Red Lodge, Montana 59068; phone 406-446-2103.

Yellowstone recruits for 2020 Youth Conservation Corps program MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - How would you like to work, learn, play, and serve in the world’s first national park? Yellowstone is currently recruiting for the 2020 Youth Conservation Corps (YCC), a residential work-based education program for young men and women between the ages of 15 and 18. Visit the YCC program to apply. Completed application materials must be received by March 1, 2020. Two, month-long YCC sessions will be offered June 7-July 8 and July 12-August 12. Sixty youth will be randomly selected from across the country to participate in the program. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and 15 years of age by June 7, but not over 18 years of age by August 12. Yellowstone recruits youth from all social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds for the program. No previous wilderness experience is required. Applicants should possess a positive attitude, a willingness and ability to work in a physically active outdoor program, and get along well with others. Participants will be required to live in the park. Room and board will be provided at a minimal cost. Wages will be set at the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. YCC is designed to develop an appreciation for the nation’s natural resources and heritage through unique educational, recreational, and work experiences. Corps members work together with National Park Service (NPS) staff to complete conservation projects such as trail rehabilitation, campground restoration, and a wide variety of resource management, visitor support services, and maintenance projects. Participants develop their job and leadership skills while exploring personal values, gaining self-esteem, expanding their awareness of work ethics, and learning firsthand about environmental and conservation issues. Corps members also participate in evening and weekend recreational activities and discover the many options for careers in the NPS and other land management agencies. Questions may be directed to [email protected]. The Yellowstone YCC Program is funded by park entrance fees and generous donations to Yellowstone Forever, the park’s official nonprofit partner.
