Slide 3 cautious Example: if you break a glass in kitchen, you would be cautious as you swept it up; if you were crossing a busy street, you would be cautious as you crossed the street Non-example: running across the street without looking is NOT being cautious Slide 4 During the CSTs, it is important to concentrate as you read the questions. To concentrate means to give ones full attention to something. Slide 5 concentrate Example: during a Spelling Bee you need to concentrate as youre spelling the word; when climbing down a steep hill, you need to concentrate as to where to put your feet Non-example: You are not concentrating when you are not listening to your teacher. Slide 6 I felt discomfort when I had to ride my bike down a very steep hill, and I was nervous. A feeling of discomfort is a feeling of uneasiness. Slide 7 discomfort Example: if you stubbed your toe, you would be in discomfort Non-example: If you feel so great you want to run around and play you are not in any discomfort. Slide 8 I was dismayed to learn the LA Lakers lost the championship game on Friday. Dismayed means to be troubled, or distressed. Slide 9 dismayed Example: You would be dismayed if you are feeling upset after you hear terrible news. Non-example: You would not be dismayed if you are happy. Slide 10 I was full of excitement when my mom surprised me with an X-Box 360. Excitement is when you are in a state of activity or agitation. Slide 11 excitement Example: during an interception during a football, there is a lot of excitement in the stands; you cant sit still you are so upset Non-example: If you are bored, you are not full of excitement. If you are calmly watching TV, you are not excited. Excited Not excited Slide 12 The wheels on the shopping cart where stuck making it immobile. To be immobile means to be unable to move. Slide 13 immobile Example: if there is no gas in the car, it is immobile Non-example: a toddler learning to walk immobile mobile Slide 14 The coach said the football players lacked stamina because they have not practiced hard each and every day. Having stamina means you have the power to resist fatigue. Slide 15 stamina Example: a marathon runner needs stamina to finish the race Non-example: you do not need stamina to lay on the couch and watch TV Slide 16 The only time I remember being really terrified as a little kid was when my brother made me go on a really high rollercoaster ride. Terrified means to be frightened. Slide 17 terrified Example: hiking in the woods and you come across a bear or a mountain lion Non example: while hiking through the woods and you come across a deer or a rabbit Slide 18 I am unsure if I will be able to go to the movies on Saturday because my mom has to work. Unsure means to not be certain. Slide 19 unsure Example: you didnt study for your Social Studies test, so you are unsure of the answers Non example: You study for your test, so you are confident in your answers! Slide 20 Other Vocabulary Words Slide 21 As we were ascending up the mountain on a ski lift, I realized I left my bag at the bottom. To ascend means to be going upward. Slide 22 ascending Example: walking up the hill, taking a ski lift Non example: going down the mountain Slide 23 My brother holds a grudge toward our cousin because he told him a lie and he finds it hard to forgive him for that. A grudge is a deep feeling of resentment. Slide 24 grudge Example: your mom and aunt are upset at each other and havent spoken in 5 years Non example: you and your brother get in a fight, but you play the next day Slide 25 My teacher reassured me that I am smart and will do well on my test because I have been practicing. Reassured means to feel secure again. Slide 26 reassured Example: when you have a nightmare and your mom comes in your room and gives you a hug Non example: If someone tells you cant do something, you are not being reassured.
