OUTLINE OF PRODUCT FCHV series intelligent medium voltage variable frequency drive (AC drive or frequency inverter), adopting power unit series connection technology, directly outputs 3, 3.3, 6, 6.6, 10 or 11kV voltage. It is a high voltage-high voltage VSI (Voltage Source Input) VFD. CAG regards high reliability, simplified operation and high performance as its design goal so as to meet the urgent requirements of the users for speed control and energy saving of fan and pumps and improvement of production technologies etc. In order to shorten the construction period required for installation and reconstruction of MV frequency conversion and speed control system, CAG introduces the integrated design for the drive, which consists of all components and inner wiring of transformer cabinet, power cabinet and control cabinet (MV switchgear or bypass cabinet is optional). The user is only required to connect MV input, MV output, LV control power supply and control signal cables. The complete drive has been wholly tested prior to delivery so that both quality and performance of every product is guaranteed.

In order to meet the requirement of transformation project and reduce the investment of new project, every function part of FCHV series frequency inverter can be installed step by step. In this way, it is ensured that there is no accident during transportation and installation. Convenient front-back maintenance, high-performance key imported components, and advanced production technologies, all these greatly reduce the requirements of the drive for the site environment.

Higher reliability Perfect sine wave output current without installation of filter. Diode full wave rectification significantly increases power factor. Efficiency of the complete system is above 96% while efficiencies of both the main power transformer

and the inverters are above 98%. HV-HV structure directly outputs 3KV, 3,3kV, 6kV, 6,6kV, 10kV or 11kV voltage. No request is needed

to modify the motors. Power unit bypass function allows derating operation when at most 6 units are bypassed. Forward/reverse rotation speed tracking and restart function is particularly applicable

to such load as fans.

WORKING PRINCIPLE AND DIAGRAM

Each phase of the FCHV medium voltage drive consists of power units in series connection with the function of voltage boost through superposed wave. Every power unit is provided with independent phase-shift power by the isolation transformer. By the means of changing the quantity of series units, it is convenient to obtain output of different voltage levels. The power unit adopts AC-DC-AC method. IGBT is used as the main circuit switching element. CAG’s drive, fully taking advantage of the mature technology of normal drives, has higher reliability.

Please refer to the diagram for the structure diagram of FCHV series MV variable speed drive. CAG’s MV drive consists of phase-shift transformer, power units and controllers etc. The drive, which adopts unit module series connection and multi-level technology, is a voltage source input drive. With high reliability and easy operation features, it meets the requirement for speed control of fans and pumps etc.

Product introduction – structural composition

Transformer CabinetThe drive’s input side realizes phase-shift output through secondary line winding at the isolation transformer. The winding provides power to each power unit. By the rectification method of multilevel shift-phase superposition, the current waveform at the network side is greatly improved, and the power factor at the network side of the load is close to 1. No power factor compensation or harmonic suppression device is required.

In order to ensure the stability of the whole MV frequency conversion and speed control system in spite of the fault of transformer, the control system supplies corresponding measuring and protection functions:

1. The transformer is equipped with closed forced air cooling system, which owns such features: large wind volume, lower energy consumption, lower noise, beautiful appearance, simple installation and reliable running. This system enables the operator to know the operation temperature of the transformer at any time and to set turning point of temperature, overtemperature alarm and overtemperature trip in the controller.

2. Three channel patrol temperature controller is used for temperature protection. The controller provides slight overtemperature and severe overtemperature protections and owns local and remote overtemperature alarm function.

3. There are voltage and current detecting advices and lightning protection device inside the transformer cabinet. CAG’s MV drive incorporates related voltage detection into power units in the power cabinet, so as to reduce daily maintenance to maximum extend and reduce the volume of the whole equipment.

Power Cabinet

The Power cabinet is a very important execution part in the MV drive. CAG’s advanced design ideas are thoroughly embodied in the power cabinet. In order to ensure long, safe and stable running of the system, CAG is very careful in choosing every part and component in the power cabinet. CAG also devotes huge energy to production technology to convert excellent design ideas to concrete product, so as to lay a solid foundation for prominent performances of the product. The following passages present the fundamental features of the power cabinet from aspects of structure, function principles and protection etc:

1. Power unit modularization is adopted as the design idea. Each power unit can be drawn out, moved and replaced with ease from the supporting racks. Since all power units are totally identical, if one certain power unit fails to work properly due to fault, it is applicable to replace it with a backup power unit within the time allowed for withdrawal. It takes only 5 minutes to replace a power unit with no special tool. The following drawing shows the power unit structural diagram in CAG’s drive:

2. The mature Inverter technology is applied. Each power unit in the power cabinet is powered by a group of the second side of the input transformer. The power units are insulated to each other and so are the second windings of the transformer. The secondary windings adopt extended delta connection and realize multiple superposition in order to achieve the aim of lowering down the input harmonic current. As every power unit directly uses power devices of large power, there is no requirement for series connection of the devices and there is no problem of voltage sharing caused by series connection of the devices. As the structure is entirely identical, all power units are interchangeable. The system is basic single phase inverter circuit and the rectifier side is diode three phase full bridge. The control mode of IGBT inverter bridge is PWM control. The main components in the power units are of imported world renowned brands. Large volume of production ensures direct purchase from the foreign manufacturers or their large trade agents for the components. CAG pays much attention to component purchase management and import channels so as to ensure the quality of the components. All the printed circuit boards (PCBs) are developed and produced by CAG itself. CAG employs the advanced machine welding technology to produce all PCBs (several hundreds PCBs for a batch) to meet the requirement of large volume production, so that the quality and reliability is guaranteed and there is no need for the customers to worry about off production of the boards or the delivery time.

3. Power unit series connection and multi-level technologies are applied. Solutions of different quantity of power units are adopted in terms of voltage levels. By mutual series connection of output terminals U and V at each power unit into star connection, the drive supplies power to the motor. PWM waveform of each power unit is recombined to provide a perfect PWM waveform with lower dv/dt, and to reduce damage to cables and motor. There is no need for output filter and the cables can be extended to a long distance according the requirement of the customer. The motor can be run without derating and the drive can be directly used for the renovation of old equipment. Meanwhile, the harmonic loss of the motor is greatly reduced, the mechanical vibration thereof is eliminated and the mechanical force of bearing and impeller is also decreased.

Control CabinetThe control cabinet is the core of the whole MV frequency conversion and speed control system. All the functions of the drive are realized depending on the advanced control concept. The elaborately designed algorithm in the controller ensures optimal operation performance of the motor. The man-machine interface provides friendly English monitoring and operation interface. In the meantime remote control and network control is realized.

1. The control cabinet consists of DSP/FPGA high-speed processor, man-machine interface and PLC etc. The man-machine interface is a kind of touch-screen interface and the DSP/FPGA processor realizes PWM control algorithm. The man-machine interface provides connection of the drive with the site interface of the customer. The friendly English/Chinese monitoring interface is easy and fast to operate and can realize remote control and network control. The built-in PLC is employed for logic processing of the switch signals in the cabinet and can be flexibly connected to the interface at customers’ site of application to meet their special requirement. Fiber communication technology is adopted among the controller and power units. The low voltage part is completely and reliably isolated with the high voltage part so the drive owns extremely high safety and extraordinary anti-electromagnetic interference feature, the reliability of the whole system is greatly improved either. The drive is equipped with UPS which ensures reliable supply of the power source of the controller.

2. Siemens’ PLCs are adopted in CAG’s drive as controllers to process different inside-cabinet switching value logic signals, customer’s control system signals and site state signals. Depending on years’ of experience, CAG’s engineering staff has thoroughly grasped application of these functions in CAG’s drives so all the functions hereinabove have been incorporated into our MV drives. Thanks to the excellent features, CAG’s drive owns strong interface and communication capability with site control system. The interface and protocol are subject to extension according the requirement of the users.
