June 2005 Fast is Faster I suppose it takes a while for a town to ramp up to the realization that it’s become a big city. Coming here from New York City was like moving to a small burg in the country, but in the last ten years the population has swelled enormously, much of it coming from the huge coastal cities like mine. And they’ve all brought their driving habits. I don’t know about you but motoring around Albuquerque lately has bordered on information overload. Traffic has developed a tendency to travel three feet apart, regardless of speed. Back in the Big Apple it was similar, with the big difference that everybody was used to maneuvering in those con- ditions. The reaction here seems to be either indifference, overload or agression. Paying attention hasn’t entered the equa- tion yet. For some it seems that the thrill has gotten the better of them, and they see the highways as some sort of roller coaster ride. They fly across multiple lanes, pass on exit ramps with their foot on the floor, take a spot in your lane even if the space is a foot too short. They drive like they know what they’re doing, while they obviously don’t. I used to advocate a head check on every lane change, but have come to believe that there simply isn’t time for that any more, given the speeds and congestion. I use my blind spot mirrors almost exclusively now. Rear view mir- rors are for keeping an eye out for rear enders. Anybody else in them is too far away to worry about. I’m hoping that drivers will get used to the new demographic sooner rather than later, but for now it seems the streets are becoming a battle zone. Not only for the aggression I was talking about last month, but for people who simply can’t handle the amount of information that’s required to process driving on our roads and end up bashing into each other. I still don’t drive more than five minutes anywhere, ever, without seeing an accident. I’m hoping the next one’s not me, or you. I recommend those blind spot mirrors. Fast is FasterI suppose it takes a while for a town to ramp up to the realization that it’s become a big city.

Back in the Big Apple it was similar, with the big difference that everybody was used to maneuvering in those con-ditions. The reaction here seems to be either indifference, overload or agression. Paying attention hasn’t entered the equa-tion yet.

Rear view mir-rors are for keeping an eye out for rear

enders.

All Scream for Ice Cream!by Robert Keenphotos by Rusty Gordon, Mark Winslow, Michael Seebeck, and Steve MounceFor the first time in the four year his-tory of the event I choose to haul my bike to Glenwood and limit my riding to the immediate vicinity. I have a problem with my shoulders which is necessitating surgery this summer. Perhaps 35 years of handlebars is the cause – who knows – but until an improved condition I must limit my riding. So I was looking at the world through a windshield for the most

part and lightening the load for several riders (I didn’t ask what goods I was hauling.)

What I did know was that I had two cases of wine for tasting and it was too much

for the gang! The wine prefer-ence poll indicated red was the color of choice, so we sampled Malbec (Argentina), Shiraz (South Africa, Australia and Washington State), Red Table Wine (California) and a special home brew courtesy of Michael Seebeck. If white was your color we had Pinot Grigio/Gris (Italy, Oregon and California)

and Rieslings (New Mexico, Germany and Washington State.) The conversations became more animated as the evenings wore on: in vino veritas as they say. At least their were no fights, knifings or shootings!

Steve Mounce and I took in the Catwalk and Mogollon on Friday and even rode up to the Mogollon cemetery (gotta love that 259 pound dirt bike!) after enjoying lunch at the Purple Onion (the pie place was closed) and touring the town museum, which is loaded with memorabilia and well worth a visit.

Saturday had me driving to Deming to score a set of alternator brushes to get Jim Salas back on the road, then walk-ing to the Glenwood park for burgers at a fund raiser. A dance was held later that evening but the word from the mayor of Mosquero (Ed Quarles) was that they were looking for young(er) blood. Not to worry, the wine was flowing back at the

Crab Apple Cabins. Sunday was homecoming by which-

ever path one chose, so I looked through

the windshield and watched every bike from the group go flying past. Another weekend in Glenwood – we’ll do it again until we get it right.

Rally Barbecue Reportby Kwang-sun StevensSpring has sprung! The Rally Committee meetings have had good turnouts, and as a result, the rally logo has been finalized.

The rally t-shirt is hot red with Dave Wilson’s magical Airhead inside our state’s bor-der. On the back is a license plate with our club initials. The mug will be stainless steel with the logo engraved on it – an idea by Jim Salas. The pin will be the NM plate. Thanks to all who gave input for the design.

New members have shown strong interest: Michael Milgram submitted sev-eral design ideas, and Becky Lawson and John Carson have been willing to volun-teer right from the start.

The second barbecue party at my house was May 7th. The weather was again perfect. The partici-pants included John Desko, RJ Mirabal, Gary & Shelly Oleson, Michael & Beverly Seebeck, Susan Johnson, Kevin Ferguson, James Stevens and myself.

John Desko’s delicious story about winning his speeding ticket battle with the police was the pick of the day. My effort to document the Sipapu Rally was presented to par-ticipants for review.

The next Rally Committee meeting will be on Wednesday, June 1 at the Zea Restaurant (Montgomery & San Mateo) at 6 pm. In addition, I have found a charm-ing Italian Restaurant for the July 6 meeting. Al Vincenzo’s is located at 1435 Eubank. We can enjoy our meeting in a bright and quiet atmosphere.

The infamous Ice Cream Ride crossed paths with Mokee Dugway and the result was lots of dirt and lots of twisty roads. Check out inside for more of these great rides, and sign up to come along yourself. We’d love to see you in these pictures!
