ecember is hands down my favorite month of the whole year because of what the holiday season brings. I like to say that the holiday season “romances” us. December just has a special charm with the neighborhoods decked out in lights, Christmas trees standing tall and bright with Christmas

cheer, and of course the so many merry gatherings!

Ladies, if you’re anything like me, the boot fashion of December is definitely something to get excited about. You’ve been eyeing those ankle boots with fur for the last couple of months, and now it’s finally time to treat yourself (I did!).

Check out Tutto Cuore in Pacific Beach for a gift or two for yourself and the other shoe lovers in your life.

Speaking of gifts, 'tis the season for gift giving and receiving. The Fashion 5.0 team has created an excellent gift giving guide for your must haves this season (page 30). This time of year is also a great time to remember to spread the cheer, and consider gifts that give back or support a special cause close to your heart. My boyfriend, Kiptyn Locke, shared with us in this issue just how to do so, read on page 11.

As this season romances us with the joy and love in the air, don’t forget about yourself! Follow the dating dos & don’ts (page 14) to make sure you give yourself the greatest of opportunities for love at this time of year! My personal favorite is on the dos list: mistletoe for me and my beau.

As I write this last editor’s note of 2011, I’m wondering where the time has gone. What an incredible year it was with many lessons learned, memories made and so much to be grateful for. Now it’s time to look forward to 2012 and dream of new goals and dreams for the new year.

As a well-known former local celebrity, Ali Fedotowsky is no stranger to the camera. After her dramatic withdrawal from The Bachelor in 2010, she was chosen to star in ABC’s sister program The Bachelorette later that year. Last month Fedotowsky joined Fashion 5.0 Magazine for a Breakfast at Tiffany's-inspired editorial. In an exclusive interview with Fashion 5.0, flip to page 22 to see Ali's take on love, friendship, fashion and more.

Mark Sacro is an established celebrity, commer-cial and fashion photographer based in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas. Currently he has spreads in GQ South Africa and FHM (Russia and Australia) and is shooting for Elle Vietnam this month. In response to working with Fashion 5.0, Sacro stated, "I'm honored they chose me to shoot this cover. The Fashion 5.0 team is amazing to work with! I walked right on set and everyone involved nailed the con-cept while working like clockwork."

Dream bigger dreams. That’s what I want you to do. December tends to be a time of reflection as the last month of the year. This year, however, what if we shake it up a bit? What if we don’t look back just yet and instead we look forward? Here’s the thing, before you know it (and maybe even before you put this magazine down) someone is going to be asking you about new year’s resolutions, goals and plans for the year ahead. What you prioritize for the year ahead will be based on how you’re feeling at the time you’re making those decisions.

At the end of the month it’s always healthy to sit down and reflect, but before you do that, I want to challenge you with two ways of giving back this month. This challenge may introduce new feelings that help you shape the plans you make for the next twelve months. Good news, the first part of giving back is all about YOU.

As this year comes to an end, you have the chance to learn about yourself and then create your future for the year to come. Giving back is the opportunity to change what lies ahead. enjoy the adventure!

GivinG Back to YoU The chAllenGe Try something you’ve never tried. Get out of your comfort zone.

Sometimes we set our goals based on what we think we are capable of. What feels real-istic and easy can find a way to trump what we’re actually passionate about. This first idea is to put yourself in an unfamiliar posi-tion and see how you cope with it. It might open your mind.

Whether it’s a social event, an activ-ity, a personal interaction or anything else you’ve wanted but been scared to try – now is your time, go for it! (By the way, it has to be legal. Rules are rules.) You might find out that you’re stronger than you thought you were or that you actually enjoy doing something that you never thought you would enjoy.

GivinG Back to otHERS The chAllenGe Choose cause-related products when possible. Do one thing entirely for someone else.

As society has become more philanthropic, brands too have found ways to give back. TOMS Shoes was one of the first to introduce popular cause-related products. Today there are hundreds of other brands finding ways to give back as well, such as 46NYC, Krochet Kids, 31 Bits and fashionABLE (just to name a few). This holiday season, if you’re buying gifts, try to give the business to a company that is doing something to help others.

Challenge part two, you don’t have to spend a dime to help others. Choose a volunteering opportunity with a non-profit organization or consciously decide to do some-thing for someone else. We all do nice things for people from time to time but for this experience, it should be something that you consciously plan out for one day. Sometimes by putting someone else first we learn some-thing about ourselves as well.

Anthology was designed with acoustics as the priority, creating what some artists have described as the best per-formance atmosphere in Southern California.

Anthology exhibits as much care and expertise in their menu as they do in their acoustics and atmosphere. Chef Allison has or-chestrated a seasonal menu of aromatic and powerful dishes that showcase farm-fresh and locally-grown ingredients. Anthology is open for music and dining Tuesday through Sat-urday, and occasionally on Sunday. What do you promote?i promote music events, mostly reggae events.

What does a reggae promotion company do?i enjoy getting people excited and amped about upcoming events with hot fresh artists, proven veterans and legends.

What artists do you work with?i love working with all the artists. my closest associations right now are i-Octane, tippa irie, collie Buddz, Don carlos and Piracy.

What venues do you work with?my longest residencies i have are at the worldBeat center and Belly up tavern. i do a lot of deejaying and emceeing at these venues. i also have a weekly event i do at winstons Beach club. February will mark five years doing a weekly in OB.

with almost two de-cades in the business,

DJ carlos culture began his career in 1992 as a reggae DJ. it

all began when he took a vacation to Jamaica back in 1988. On that trip he realized that reggae mu-sic would be a big part of his life.

since then, he has been playing non-stop here in san Diego and also was a radio jockey

on 91X for seven years.

What artists would you like to team up with in the future?i like working with i-Octane and want to do more work with him whether it’s designing his merchandise or deejaying shows with him. i'm also having fun collaborating with Piracy and the south Bay wailers. Piracy has a solo cD project we are releasing in December. i want to do another release with her in 2012.

How did you get into what you are doing now?i had friends from cleveland, Ohio, who were into live music, especially reggae. One of them did a radio show while at Ohio state university. He invited me to help him do the show in 1985. i've been into deejaying ever since.

Why are reggae and dancehall your calling? i love music of all types but reggae is my favor-ite. i was drawn to reggae through the spiritual-ness of the music and the positive message. i needed some guidance in my life and rastafari-anism and reggae music cleared the way.

if you would have taken a different turn in life, what would you be doing right now?i am a full-time computerized graphic design teacher at san Diego unified school District. But if i didn't do that or deejay, i would probably be into pho-tography or graphic designing of some kind. i like fashion and style and love being creative. maybe a combination of designing a clothing line with music and fashion in mind!

What's to come from you in the future?i see myself deejaying more, includ-ing both bigger and international gigs. i've been getting into some electronic music, too. more work with Piracy and the south Bay wailers. i have a great new family that’s growing, that will be fun.

the international reggae star rose back in 2007 when columbia records signed collie Buddz. the affiliation later ended in 2008. since the split, Buddz founded his own independent record label, Harper Digital.

their self-titled debut album hit the charts entering the Billboard reggae chart at number one. since then, he has collaborated with supa Dups, shea taylor, Bang Out, screwface, Bobby konders, crown N kah-so-real, Busta rhymes, cypress Hill and Paul wall, g-unit and shaggy. we sat down with collie at the House of Blues san Diego where he shared his story about his life of music.

How did you get startedin the music industry?that's a deep question. started off messing around in my basement, all the brethrens would come around, my friends and stuff like that. we would throw on an instrumental, we would sing other peoples' songs. After a little while we started making up our own lyrics just for fun, joking, because we figured out how to record on a cassette tape.

we used to have an old AiwA, i don't even know if AiwA is still around, but an AiwA system. we used to plug in headphones to the microphone jack and we could sing through one of the ear-pieces. that's how we all got started as far as writing and stuff like that. i was deep into the sound clash, where DJs play against each other and crowds are basically the judge. that's how i basi-cally got started.

Was there a certain timewhere you felt thatreggae was your calling?i grew up with the music, there was no other music. it was only reggae, no hip hop or anything else... just straight reggae music til i was about sixteen.

You have been all over the world, is there a tour spot that you always look forward too?Anything west coast! west coast has a

nice vibe. East coast as well. those two places have nice vibes.

is there a favorite collaboration you've done in your career so far?gappy ranks, the artist i am tour-ing with right now from London, we have a song together right now called "tune up." that’s probably my favor-ite collaboration right now.

do you have any influences you would like to share with us?Beenie man, Bounty killer, Bar-rington Levy, tenor saw, garnet silk, Anthony B, sizzla, Luciano, i think my style is a mix of all of those artists.

Who are the members of new Kingston Band?they are all brothers and the father plays the bass. steven plays the gui-tar, tahir plays the keyboards, court-ney Panton, Jr., plays the drums and courtney Panton, sr., plays the bass.

When do you plan on settling down?i am already married! i married my wife in may last year, she was preg-nant when we got married. we actu-ally found out a month before we got married that she was pregnant. we now have a beautiful baby girl who's now ten months named cienna. she is a handful, she's running around

already, starting to walk, crawl and all that. so i am pretty much settled down as far as family life.

What are we expecting musically from you in the future?we are working on the new album now, which should be good to go by April of next year!

if you weren't in the music business, whatelse would you have done?that's a good question! Before i was in the music industry, i was doing construction as an unskilled laborer and painter. i would have found something. But whatever i found i would have been the best at it. i strive for that!

people said that we were one of his

favorite bands."–Selwyn Brown

it all began with a racehorse named steel Pulse. the group originated in Birmingham, England, back in 1975. At first the group had a tough time starting out, but once

they did, they opened for new wave bands like the clash, the stranglers, generation X, the Police and Xtc. Once they were on the radar, island records signed the group, but later parted because of a failure to break the group in the states. Later, steel Pulse won a grammy for Best reggae Album, and was nominated for another grammy award in 1992. since then, steel Pulse is still very active playing music and touring the world. we caught up with selwyn Brown before the steel Pulse show at House of Blues san Diego this summer, where he shared his thoughts about reggae music, touring and san Diego.

How are you feeling tonight?Feeling good because i've played in san Diego quite a few times over the years and we always get a good vibe here, a good re-sponse and a great loyal following as well. so we are looking forward to it.

What keeps you guys coming back to san diego?it is the support from the fans, 'cause over the years, you know, the fans come to us al-ways telling us how music inspires them in different kinds of ways. most [of] california is very supportive of reggae music in gen-eral. it's a combination of those two things.

You've been with the band since the very beginning, how has the fan base changed?well, it's interesting because it's like back in the day... there's a lot of young fans com-ing to our shows. A lot of them tell us back in the day their parents used to come to our shows and they heard the music around the house, so it's the next generation of people that support our music. that's very impor-tant to us because it's the young people that are going to carry the music forward.

How has reggae changed over 30 years?we are known as an old-school reggae band. when we started playing music we were inspired by the roots reggae music that we heard coming out of Jamaica that was not just wailers, but, you know, the Abyssinians and third world, gregory isaacs [and] Burning spear. so that whole roots movement, that's what we grew up on, that's how we started, that's what inspired us to start the band in the first place.

After Bob marley passed away a lot of people said to us that they looked to us as the next band to carry on where Bob marley left off. what's happening now is that people [are] now looking more for music with substance in it. Especially with things happening around the world, people want more truth and they want more music about reality. they want to know what [is] happening with all the cultures across the world as well. that's where we come in, so luckily for us we started the old school way but we embrace what the youth are doing now. we are kind of getting [the] best of both worlds.

You mentioned earlier that you guys used to tour with Bob marley?we did five shows with him. when Bob was alive, a lot of people said that we were one of his favorite bands. maybe we reminded him somewhat of when he was coming up as a youth. He wanted to spread the music to all kinds of people both from all genres and from all ages. Luckily enough, we've been able to build a following over the years that are very loyal to us.

Who are some of your inspirations?when i was growing up listening to reggae, i listened to other music as well. From stevie wonder, from motown [to] the whole stacks movement. i listen to jazz, the cru-saders. Nowadays, anything that sounds good. i will also listen to Adele and also i listen to Beyoncé, Prince. Everybody is trying to create their own niche. they are trying to inspire people with their music.

What will we see from steel Pulse in the future?i started steel Pulse and all the band members had worked with other people as well. At the moment we actually wrote a song for the people of Haiti and all the funds from that will go to Haiti. Locally, i'm actually collaborating with kids in America and England as well, even my own kids.

i recently did a song called "reach for da sky" because i'm trying to push this conscious rap movement. David's [lead vocals/guitarist David Hinds] own son is doing his own writing, so we are trying to help him, plus some of my own sons as well. Plus, we are doing workshops in schools, we do motivational speaking.

How has being the Bachelorette changed your life?It's changed my life is so many ways. First, I found a real love that I am grateful to have experienced. I also had the opportunity to meet so many amazing women since be-ing the Bachelorette. I cannot tell you how good it feels when a mother tells me I was a good role model for her daughter. Even just last night, a woman came up to me and thanked me for representing a strong, independent woman on The Bachelorette. That's what I love most about my life since being the Bachelorette, that I've appar-ently made some small impact.

What’s something you learned about yourself since being on the show?I think I've learned that I am stronger than I ever thought I could be. Being picked apart in the public eye can really take a toll on a person, but I think I've been able to shut that out and focus on what's impor-tant in life and I'm proud of that.

When did you move to san diego and what have you been up to this year? What kind of jobs and appearances have you done? I was working at Fox 5 News as a corre-spondent for about a year. It was a really cool experience and I got to learn so much about being a broadcast journalist. I've also tried to do my best to give back to the community. I like to volunteer at a church to distribute bags of food to those who need it. I walked the Susan G. Komen walk last year and filmed some of it for a "Bach-elor gives Back" segment.

I was lucky enough to help open a Sprin-kles store in La Jolla where we donated $25,000 to Dress for Success San Diego, a charity that is very important to me. I love this local charity because it gives women the most basic thing they need for a job interview — clothing. I just love that they encourage women to be successful and help women get jobs. I have also been a strong believer that women can have love, a job, a family — we can have it all!

Ali Fedotowsky won the hearts of millions across America as they watched her find love on Season 6 of The Bachelorette on ABC. Her fun-loving and down to earth personality made it easy for women of all ages to relate to her. Ali’s season of The Bachelorette received the show’s highest ratings aside from its first season. Though the show has brought Ali much recogni-tion, the 27-year-old beauty has much more ahead of her.

The former Facebook employee has previous experience with advertising and recently found an interest in news broadcasting. Though what lies ahead is not yet fully determined, one thing for certain is that Ali Fedotowsky is a woman who stays true to herself and to what she stands for.

What are the next plans with your career? are you still interested in pursuing a career in broadcast news? I really enjoyed broadcast news, but I'm not sure if that is in the cards for me moving for-ward. Sadly, I just moved out of San Diego and I'm going to miss it dearly! But I promise to visit often. I have so many great friends there, things I love to do and places I love to eat at that I won't be able to stay away for long! So right now I just moved up north to the Bay Area and I am looking into what opportunities there are up here. Maybe I will look into the news, maybe I will start work-ing at an internet start-up. My career could really go anywhere at this point. It's scary and exciting all at the same time.

What’s one thing you want your fans to know at this point in your life?That I love each and every one of them. I am so grateful for their support over the past couple years. I couldn't be more blessed to have their support.

While you were living in san diego, what were some of your favorite "hidden gem" spots?I really love the chicken pad thai at Star An-ise in UTC. When I used to live in the area I would go every other day to get it. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I also really love Café 976 in Pacific Beach. They steam their eggs instead of cooking them with butter or cooking spray in a frying pan, which means they are healthier and so so yummy!

Even though you're taking some time for yourself right now, are you open to finding new love in the near future?I'm taking time for myself. I'm not ready to date right now. I absolutely believe in love and hope I am lucky enough to find it again in the future.

What's one piece of dating or love advice you can give our readers?I would probably say ditch the bar scene and start going to events to meet people. Go to events that you really enjoy. If you meet someone there, you already know you

have one common interest since you're at the same event. Also, go to A LOT of events. Don't stay in every night after work because you're tired. You're never going to meet someone unless you get out there and meet people. Plus, meeting new people and making new friends is great in itself. If you meet a love interest, that's just a bonus!

Which fashion brands would we find in your closet right now?My entire closet is pretty much Express and Guess by Marciano. I love these two brands because they both have lots of solids in their collec-tions pretty much every year. I am not a huge fan of prints. I try to stick to solid colors in my wardrobe and then dress them up with accessories!

is there one fashion item you cannot live without?I couldn't live without my brown Steve Madden boots. They are pretty much flats — I HAVE to be comfortable — but have a slight wedge which gives me a little lift and make my legs look a little longer! Plus, they go with pretty much everything. Most days of the week, you will find me in these boots.

How do you stay in shape, are there any particular exercises or workouts you enjoy?Since my knee surgery five months ago, I have been limited as far as exercise. Before my surgery, I loved going to Core Power Yoga in Pacific Beach. I think they have multiple locations around San Diego. It really is a workout for the mind, body and soul. Right now I try to focus on hiking and jumping on the elliptical to do interval training. My absolute favorite hike in San Diego is Torrey Pines. I used to hike that every few days. Cowles Mountain is a close second.

as a 27 year old, you have surely met a lot of people, especially with multiple jobs and living in multiple cities. as people have come in and out of your life, what would you say the true meaning of friendship is?The interesting thing about the friends that I've made and stayed very close with over the years is that they are all married. I don't know ex-actly why that is, but almost every single one of my best friends is mar-ried and all of them live in different places all over the country. I find that time can pass where I won't speak with them very often, but when I do speak with them it is as if no time has passed at all. I cherish these friendships so much. I travel to Texas, San Diego and San Jose often to see these people.

if you were to give some advice to someone of any age, what would it be?Be true to yourself and be strong as an individual. Don't get me wrong, I think finding love is the greatest gift in life, but I don't think someone can ever be truly happy if they don't love themselves first. As corny as it sounds, I try to tell myself affirmations every day. I even say them out loud, especially when going through tough times. The most important thing is to love yourself.

What countries have you been to?Most of the countries I have visited were on The Bachelorette, but I re-ally want to do so much more traveling in the future. I've been to French Polynesia (Tahiti), Turkey, Iceland, Portugal and Germany.

is there a place you have not traveled to but would just love to visit?I really need to visit all the staples in Europe — Italy, Spain and France are high on my list. But the place I want to go the most is Hong Kong. I've always wanted to go there and experience the culture.

if you could learn to do anything possible, whether a hobby or a career pursuit, what would you learn?I always wanted to play the guitar. But I'm a big baby and every time I try, my fingers hurt too much and I give up!

Where do you see yourself in ten years?I have no idea and I don't even want to think that far. I am trying to take life day by day, hour by hour, and live in the moment. There are so many things that I wish for my life – a loving husband, little kid-dos, and a career I'm proud of – but I'm living for today.

do you have any shout outs?Yes! Shout out to the Aliberto group. My loyal, loving fans who I am super thankful for every day! I also want to say thank you to two of the most important people in my life, my dear friends Lisa and Mith. They have taken me in during the most difficult times in my life and I am so very grateful for their friendship. They are the types of people that I could be thousands of miles away from, going through a hard time, and they would be on the next plane to come give me a big hug. That's true friendship. And, last but not least, my loving family. Mom, Dad, Raya, Mike – I love you guys so much!
