The Fashion department prepares students with discipline specific skills and knowledge leading to employment in Visual Merchandising, Buyer, RetailManagement, Fashion Styling, Apparel Manufacturing, Advertising, Event Planning and many other fashion related fields. We offer courses in textiles,visual merchandising, retail management and sales, and clothing construction. The Fashion department also offers internships in the field of fashion.

Transfer requirements in Fashion are available in the Counseling Department. In all cases, students should consult with a counselor for specifictransfer requirements.

FASH 076 Textiles 3unit(s)Hours: 3 Lecture/DiscussionIntroduction to basic textiles; the study of fibers, yarns and fabric identifications, with emphasis on various processes of textile manufacturing, fabricfinishes, sustainability/environmental concerns and appropriates for end use. Students will explorecareer development, areas of interest, and career path opportunities as they relate to the fashion industry. This course will also identify workplaceprofessionalism, appropriate dress codes, job search engines, resume building techniques, and mock cover letters related to a specific area of interest.

FASH 146 Retail Management 3unit(s)Hours: 3 Lecture/DiscussionThis course provides an introduction to management in the fashion industry. Areas of emphasis include apparel buying, multi-channel retail andconsumer behavior. The course will also review occupation opportunities within retail management.

Instruction in the principles of clothing construction from pattern to completed garment, with an emphasis on fabric performance, fit and constructiontechniques for both knit and woven fabrics.

A study of apparel design using flat pattern techniques including design, drafting, and construction of garments.Advisory on Recommended Preparation: FASH 160 or FASH 161 or equivalent college course with a minimum grade of C.

FASH 262 Fashion Lab 0.5unit(s)Hours: 2 LabStudents will explore the processes and procedures to the production of a fashion show. This course will accommodate both fashion merchandisingand design students. Areas of responsibilities will be identified and developed as they relate to fashion show production, clothing construction,marketing, organization, and sponsorship relationships. Students will apply what they have learned by producing an annual fashion show. In additionstudents will be provided an opportunity to explore the COS Closet, which will provide professional clothing for students at COS.

A basic sewing construction course, including commercial pattern use and clothing construction techniques.

FASH 264 Fashion in Southern California 1unit(s)Hours: 1 Lecture/DiscussionStudents will discover the details and business practices of Fashion Marts in the United States and in California. Students will travel to SouthernCalifornia for a day trip to experience the fashion industry, explore different career opportunities within different vendors and participate in a coursediscussion board.

FASH 271 Fashion Show Production 2unit(s)Hours: 1 Lecture/Discussion

Students will explore the processes and procedures to the production of a fashion event. This course will accommodate both fashion merchandisingand design students. Areas of responsibilities will be identified and developed as they relate to fashion production, clothing construction, styling,coordinating, marketing, organization, and sponsorship relationships. Students will apply what they have learned by producing an fashion event.
