Fantastic Phonics!
Week 5 – Strawberry Group
Monday 18th May 2020
There are a few exercises in today’s lesson that you might want to record in your work book as well as doing the accompanying worksheet. Look out for the pencil to see where they are!
Please write the date in your book and LO: Phonics Lesson before starting any activities in your books.
This week we are going to be revising all of our learning from the past four weeks, and use it to help us learn how to proofread...
When we proofread something, we are checking it to see if there are any mistakes.
We have to read through it very carefully, and if we spot something that isn’t correct we change it.
This is just like using a purple polishing pen at school!
Let’s have a go…
We will start by reminding ourselves about using superlative adjectives.
Rule 1If the adjective already ends in ewe drop the e and then add est
Rule 2If the adjective has a short vowel sound and ends in a consonant
we double the consonant and add est
Rule 3If the adjective already ends in y
we change the y for an i and then add est
est
superlative adjective
meaning the most it can be
a describing word
To turn an adjective into a superlative we add the suffix…
Let’s have a go…
Mr Mischief has been very mischievous and has deliberately made some mistakes in his writing!
Read the sentences and see if you can spot the 4 mistakes he’s made!
This castle belongs to the kindistand prettyest princess in the world.
The meanist, scaryest dragon once tried to steal the princess from her castle, but she chased him away!

Did you spot them all?
Mr Mischief has used the suffix ist when it should be est on 2 adjectives, and didn’t change the y to an i before adding est on 2 other adjectives!
I’ve underlined the mistakes using pink for think! Can you re-write the 4 adjectives in your work book correctly?
Did you get them right?

Well done!
We’ve managed to change all of the mistakes using our purple polishing pen!
Now read the sentences aloud again. Can you add lots of expression to your voice?Ask a grown up to help demonstrate to you if you’re not sure.
Let’s have a look at our common words…
Remember you can use any of the four memory strategies we know to help us learn to spell new words.
Memory Strategies Explanations
I can listen to how many syllables there are in a word and then break it into smaller parts to help me remember it e.g. yes ter day
I can find the root word and then build my word upe.g. falling = fall + ing
I can use words that I already know to help me by using the same spelling patterne.g. could, would, should
I can make up a sentence to help me remember a worde.g. could/would/should = oh you lucky duck!
people = people eat orange peel like elephants
1. Syllables
2. Base Words
3. Analogy
4. Mnemonics
This week’s common words are…
Read each of the words and clap the syllables.
If you’re finding any of the words difficult, think about which part is making it tricky for you to remember and see if one of our four memory strategies might be of help.
Once you’ve read them all and are happy, turn away from the screen and see if you can spell them by writing them in your book as an adult reads them out to you.
Check your work carefully and correct any mistakes by writing the words again next to the ones you got wrong.

Now it’s your turn!
On today’s phonics worksheet you will find some writing which needs proofreading.Your job is to underline all of Mr Mischief’s mistakes using a think for pink pen,
and then re-write the words correctly using a purple polishing pen.
Don’t forget he might have made silly mistakes like forgetting his capital letters, finger spaces and full stops! There will always be 4 mistakes in each sentence.
Here is an example of what I am looking for:
The hungriest Gruffalo lives in the darkest part of the woods.

Let’s have a go…
We will start by reminding ourselves about using contractions.
We often use shortened words when we are speaking by joining two wordstogether and dropping one or more letters from the joined words.
This is called a contraction.
All contractions contain an apostrophe as this marks where the letters have been missed out.We write an apostrophe in the air between the letters, not on the line.
e.g. rather than saying or writing
I am
we could say or write
I’m

Rule 3If the noun ends with a y (not as part of a digraph such
as oy, ay or ey) we change the y to an i and add es
A noun is a naming word. It could be the name of a person, place or thing.
When there is only one noun it is singular. When there is more than one noun it is plural. To make most nouns plural we add the suffix s:

When we covered Phase 3 and Phase 5 phonics sounds, we met some different ways to make an ai/ay and an oi/oy sound.
The position of where we find a sound (phoneme) in a word helps us to know which letters (graphemes) we should use to record that word.
We’re going to finish the week by thinking about some brand new spelling rules!
We never use ai or oi at the end of a word or immediately before a suffix
We very rarely use ay or oy in the middle of a root word (unless it is before a suffix)
Should we use ai or ay?
Mr Topsy-Turvy has been writing some words… but he often gets things the wrong way around!
Re-write each word in your book, and then see if you were right!
